Southampton Town Police Logged Long Hours Following Sandy

Certain aspects of "working conditions" are covered under state and federal law ie safety issues, length of work week etc. As far as pay is concerned the only statute is the minumum wage- there is nothing which guarantees pay rates comparable to surrounding jurisdictions ( witness the wide disparities in pay from town to town for other civil service titles)

Contract arbitrators use comparisons with surrounding areas but there is no law requiring comparable pay levels. nice try BLANK" May 11, 13 8:27 PM

I'm not sure if this is what HHH is referring to but I remember maybe 10 years ago a major metropolitan police dept (I think it was either Boston or New York City) reduced the starting pay for its officers to $25,000/year.

Nice bluff with the Taylor Law , Blank, as usual HHH called it. Swing and a Miss!!!" May 12, 13 9:34 PM

UPDATE: Police Identify Man Charged With DWI In Saturday Accident In Southampton

The article said he was charged with felony DWI. Does that mean he has prior DWI's or did he have a very high BAC? I hope he is no longer a town employee " May 15, 13 6:11 PM

Blank- The salary reduction I was referring to was not a result of a negotiated contract- it was a result of a binding arbitration decision- that was the point. As far as the Taylor Law goes- it does not apply only to police officers but to all (or most) public service employees and its main purpose is to forbid these workers from striking. And an arbitrator is not required to award pay raises compatible to surrounding/similar job titles, but to use them as comparisons. Big difference.

And you left out the part where the arbitrator is REQUIRED to consider the munucipalities financial state and its "ability to pay" when awarding pay raises. There are many cases where arbitrators have awarded no or very low increases.

You tout the Taylor Law as the greatest thing for civil servants but in fact most civil servants want it repealed, as it prohibits striking for better wages, which is labors most potent weapon in labor disputes. The Taylor Law prohibits strikes and work stoppages, and is the ace in the hole for management." May 16, 13 6:25 AM

Off-Duty Lifeguard Makes A Night Save At Napeague

So someone hears someboby calling for help in the dark, near the water, and they don't know where the person is or the nature of their distress. So they wander around for 40 minutes listening to screams for help before they call 911. Hello McFly !!!

Instead of trying to be a hero pick up the phone, call 911, and within minutes there would have been dozens of first responders (police, fire dept) on the scene; probably with a water rescue team and marine unit, with a helicopter on standby. I'm sure the woman would have been located and removed from the water a lot quicker if we had more "reporters" instead of "heroes"

And "Nature" before you blast me about you friend, ask yourself- Is it reasonable to wait 40 minutes to call for help when you know someones life may be in jeaopardy, or they may be the victim of a crime? What if this woman was being raped? If it was u wouldn't you want as many people looking as possible? Come on." May 17, 13 5:42 AM

Southampton Town Bars Police Officers From Political Committees, Stiffens Penalty For Illegal Rentals

Lets see . . . Flemming is a democrat . . the democrats wanted Wilson . . . Wilson wanted the board to fire Kiernan . . . the Repubs on the board prevented that . . . Kiernan is repub commiteeman . . . Flemming pushes this law . . . there are no democratic commiteemen in the PD . . the law affects only Kiernan. . . Something not right here can't really put my finger on it but kinda like why its not right to slip in the tongue when u kissing your sister" Jun 1, 13 6:48 AM

Voters Approve Westhampton Beach Firehouse Plans

Who do you think is counting the votes? I guarantee it passes. Only a volunteer fire dept with no oversight can conduct a sham vote like this. They probably use the same voting system for other important votes, like which resort destination to hold annual training on your dime. 125 special districts on Long Island and each one is sucking away at your wallet and no one is minding the store" Jun 5, 13 6:23 AM

442 voted out of 4000 eligible voters in the town. I m guessing many people didn't know there was an election. 286 voted yes- How many members in the dept? Add in their spouses and theres your victory. Get the shovels , another Fire Palace going up!!" Jun 6, 13 6:51 AM

they wont publish the contracts or plans because they dont want anyone to know what ridiculous expenses are involved , I would like to know the amount allocated for the kitchen, gym, large screen TV and other non- firefighting related items.
But try asking for this info- they get angry and insulted and act like the public has no right to question how its tax dollars are spent" Jun 7, 13 6:35 AM

Voters Approve New Westhampton Beach Firehouse

Ah another firefighter comes out of the woodwork to defend the newest fire palace. Thank you for addressing some mandated items which go into the construction of a firehouse; now could you actually adress what I commented on? I'll repeat it for you : Is a commercial restruant (sp) grade kitchen, fully equipped gym, large screen TV , offices for each chief, etc-- are these necessary? Are they affordable in these ecomomic times? Please discuss the need for these items as I watch my taxes go up every year thanks to special district increases . Sorry but I CANT AFFORD IT ANYMORE!!" Jun 8, 13 6:12 AM

Does OSHA require a $5,000 stove? My point is that many of the special districts (there are 125 on Long Island) which all take a piece of our prop tax money seem to feel they can spend this money on whatever they want with no taxpayer imput or oversight.
In my hamlet I pay tax to 8 special districts- and all of them go up every year. Where I can I have reviewed the budgets of these districts and I have found no evidence of fiscal constraint. Every year there is an increase and some of the expenditures are ridiculous.

I'm glad u have no issues with wasteful spending but many of us are working multiple jobs to put food on the table- and we do take issue. And by the way I do volunteer work in my community for the few hoiurs a week Im not working

Sag Harbor May Rehire Laid-Off Police Officer

Brown Tide Returns In Western Shinnecock, Quantuck Bays

Yes you obviously don't have any grasp of engineering and hydraulics- maybe someone who does could respo0nd and describe the size these pipes would have to be to exchange that much water, and the size and number of pump houses needed to push that much water. This is not a matter of digging a trench and then filling it in and leaving nothing visible" Jun 14, 13 6:17 AM

Sag Harbor May Rehire Laid-Off Police Officer

Oh lighten up!! Try breaking down on the highway in the rest of Suffolk county. The super cool "highwaymen" of the SCPD won't even slow down when they pass you, much less stop to assist" Jun 15, 13 6:07 AM

Brown Tide Returns In Western Shinnecock, Quantuck Bays

Don't really know-- the bays are flushed daily by the changing of the tides. Quantuck Bay is the point where the tide change is "spit" between Moriches and Shinnecock inlets; therefore the water in this area does not get exchanged with water from the ocean.
You can see the cleaner water nearer to the inlets- the farther away from the inlet the less water gets exchanged and you can see the difference.

Mecox Bay is different- its a closed bay that is fed by fresh water springs and runoff and when opened it takes about 2-3 weeks to noticably raise the salinity in the bay.

I agree that there needs to be some way to "flush the toilet" that is Quantuck Bay, but as I said, I'm not a hydraulic engineer so I don't know if it is feasable to do a slow drain through a small pipe or if it would be necessary to mimic the flushing/water exchange that would be present if the bay was in closer proximity to an inlet . maybe constructing a cement lined canal across the beach say about 12 feet wide which could be covered, but would remain open and allow a water exchange powered by the tides." Southampton Town Independence Party Hands Out Endorsements

You missed something. Havemeyer is a democrat who has been masquerading as a republican for years because that was the way to get reelected to an all Rep board. Last election Fred got nervous and sought the dem endorsement as well as rep.
Now that the board has diversified, and the rep have shunned him, Fickle Fred has emerged from his republican cocoon like a dusty old moth and flitted back to his comfortable perch among the stuffy folds of the democratic suit; where he basks in the upper crust blue blooded comforts of the Meadow Club (of course I want my shrimp peeled!) and regales the enthralled with tales of his harrowing journey through the sewer that is the republican party and how he survived living among the "common people". " Jun 16, 13 6:45 AM

I did not intend to denigrate Mr Havemeyers accomplishments; merely to point out that he is, above all, a POLITICIAN, and a chameleon who will change political parties as easily as he changes his overcoat, if it will get him re-elected. Perhaps he can solicit the endorsement of the "Rent is Too Damn High" party as well? Gotta be worth a few votes. Or is it the "Pants Are Too Damn Low" party? Whatever " Jun 21, 13 10:46 AM
