Whale killed with bullet; experts defend how beaching was handled

I am struck by the "organic" metaphor of this baby whale dying on our beaches and the message it brings to us. If you remember a dead whale washed up on our shores when LIU was closed and now our new college, which we were so proud of and which many of us have found work at again, is dying in its infancy and the sea sends us its own dying infant... I am bereft for the mother of this baby whale, for our community who could not save it, and for our campus which seems cannot be saved. Where do we go for solace in this new and empty world?" Stony Brook Southampton students seek $10,000 by end of day for legal fund

I think Joseph Heller might be able to explain it to you. " Apr 17, 10 12:17 AM

So proud of my students and our local support: The SH Press and Peconic Public Broadcasting. It is amazing how many have again come out to save this campus. it has been a bitter blow dealt after three years of hard, dedicated work to our students and this innovative college with its cutting edge educational approach and curriculum." Thiele: Stony Brook rejects idea of maintaining residential campus at Southampton

“It really isn’t all about money,” Mr. Thiele said, “They just don’t want to operate a residential campus at Southampton—regardless of the money.” That is exactly what Assemblywoman, Deborah Glick, said to my students when they were in Albany to lobby on behalf of their college. She was very clear that there was political motivation to privatize the SUNY system. My students deserve better than to be the collateral damage of this politicking. Our community deserves better too. " May 6, 10 7:47 PM

Shinnecock tribe receives federal recognition

One white girl happy for our native brothers and sisters--recognition is the least we can do. " Jun 18, 10 2:56 PM

Shinnecock Nation explores opening tribal college at Stony Brook Southampton site

At the SUNY Southampton graduation last month, Elizabeth Haile whispered to me, "Think Shinnecock Tribal College." Since I have just lost my job at SUNY Southampton that is exactly what I have been thinking. And on Solstice Eve we lit a sacred fire to bless the land our campus is on and I put into those flames "Shinnecock Tribal College."
I cannot think of a better way to give back to our native brothers and sisters than to give them the campus and land that was theirs to begin with and to continue education for their people and ALL people. Why not create a Sustainable Studies College for Indigenous Peoples? We were all indigenous at some point." Jun 25, 10 2:16 PM

Judge rules that cuts to Stony Brook Southampton violate state law

OMG! I spent the day lost on SUNY, being helped by my dear resilient students from Southampton, who would show me where my classrooms, elevators, buildings were... They were in smiling groups, stopping to chat with people and hug everyone. When they found me outside the library, I was stunned by their news. After so many losses, so much sorrow, for these young people to see that they were right to be upset, to march, to rebel, to seek justice is such a powerful message.

To celebrate their victory, I washed my face in the fountain outside the admin building and then drove the hour back home--where I never should have had to leave in the first place. Thank you to our community for all of your support of our college--all we ever wanted out here was a place to educate our children and then our world." Aug 30, 10 9:44 PM

Cuts At Campus Still Called Illegal

They were here 6 months ago and are still here--where were you? Sen. La Valle called our empty campus a travesty and so it is. The people fighting this thing are in it for the long haul. It is an uphill battle and if you knew how tired my students are trying to get justice you wouldn't criticize the only real voice they have in the legislature. It's not an easy task to reopen a college, but with the help of our elected officials and the brave students of Southampton it will happen--sooner than later. They need all the help they can get though!" Oct 15, 10 11:28 PM

University Signs Settlement, Ending Stony Brook Southampton Lawsuit

An apology does nothing for those of us who lost our jobs, the many of our students who dropped out of college because of SUNY's action, the crass disregard for our community and sorry but do you really think a graduate Arts campus is going to fix things? The MFA program still embedded on the campus played some very dirty pool to stay there. "They'll [the undergraduates] get over it," is what I heard one senior administrator say, who is still running things over there. Education IS Non-Negotiable--it should be NOT FOR Profit. We profit from education when our young people become educated and create a more intelligent society, that is compassionate and caring of others. " Aug 12, 11 8:36 AM

NOAA Defends Decision To Euthanize Whale In Moriches Bay

this was murder, plain and simple. We were not allowed to do ANYTHING to help the whale despite community desire. If NOAA had just waited the rain would have risen the sea level and the female whale would now be alive and free, but NO! NOAA had to murder her by drilling into her side, so blood poured out of her while she flailed and suffered. And they said digging her out, might hurt her? For godsakes! At least she stood a chance with local people taking efforts to save her. NOAA has now murdered two baby whales grounded on our shores in the past 6 years. No Efforts have been made to save them. That is NOT how you protect an endangered species! NOAA should be on trial for murder and get off our shores. To make it against federal law to help the whale, is inexcusable! We should have stormed the whale and freed her. GO TO HELL NOAA! " Dec 1, 16 1:52 AM

Necropsy Offers Few Answers To Why Whale Stranded In Moriches Bay

Sign our petition to get NOAA off our shores in relation to stranded baby whales! THANK YOU!

Maybe if NOAA had LET THE PEOPLE OF OUR COMMUNITY HELP SHE WOULD STILL BE ALIVE! Sign the petition to get NOAA to back off and allow us to do what we would have done weeks before they even showed up. BTW: Euthanize means to DRILL INTO THE SIDE OF THE BABY WHALE AND FORCE HER TO BLEED OUT! THAT IS MURDER!
