Home in Mastic funded by Southampton Town Section 8 money shut down

This sort of thing has been going on for decades in the Mastic-Shirley area and has been referred to as "welfare dumping." I was alway aware of how it worked, but was completely blindsided by the fact that the funding stays with the originating town. Just so I get this straight: Mastic-Shirley gets the Section8 recipients and the lack of stablity/crime that comes with it, while neighboring townships get to keep the gov't money? Sounds fair. And I used to think the people who wrote into the South Shore Press complaining about this were conspiracy nuts. Wow." Feb 8, 10 2:02 PM

Abrupt and tearful end to Stony Brook Southampton dream

What about selling it to Kiwanis, or whatever it's called now? I'm sure there are plenty of marine research labs that could use the acreage and facilities for R&D. Or what about converting it to a Performing Arts Center like they have in Westhampton Beach?" Apr 8, 10 2:44 PM

Just call them the comeback kids

I'm missing something here. What was the "dispute" about, exactly? I think that got cut during editing this story for online posting or something. " Apr 22, 10 1:36 PM

Publisher of Dan's Papers files for Chapter 11

Great. Now what will Hamptonyte Blog do for their hilarious recaps of that paper? " May 4, 10 4:32 PM

Ah, just read Hamptonyte's latest entry. Looks like Dan's is here to stay! And thanks for the link, Electricutioner. Though the commenters at Dan's are calling us all out, I think. " May 5, 10 10:39 AM

Dog poisoned; was it whale meat?

$4,100?! Sorry but I have a big back yard and plenty of shovels if that happens to MY dog. " May 6, 10 11:41 AM

Hamptons Online sues former publisher, seeking millions in damages

Hamptonyte-DOT-blogspot has a hilarious take on this, but I sort of agree with RealLocal. Florio sounds sleazy and I can totally see him running off with unjustified expenses on the company account. That said, Hamptonyte blog's take on how Hamptons.com fired him for wanting to practice journalism is spot on! " May 14, 10 5:38 PM

Southampton School Board suspends high school principal and assistant principal, who are then hired by East Hampton

PStevens is correct. I just read on the Hamptonyte Blog that these admins are being suspended WITH pay. What was the point, then? At least make them work for their money, as opposed to getting a head start on their summer vacation. The admins even expressed a desire to do so. And yes, what employee tells their boss that they're interviewing elsewhere? What if they don't get the job they're interviewing for? Then they have to continue working where there's bad blood, or get eased out of the company? Makes no sense." May 20, 10 12:05 PM

Rumor about attack in village is debunked by police

"this country was founded by immigrants who stole ... more the land from the native inhabitants - in other words, "illegals" although, unlike you and Mr. Wedell, they were enlightened, progressive thinkers who welcomed hard working, peace loving individuals."

Well...some of the founders did own slaves, fcmcmann, so I'm not sure how enlightened or progressive they were, and they were all complicit in the legalization of chattel slavery, an evil institution that outlived all of them. But your point is well taken, the country was founded on grounds of religious freedom and opportunity for personal enrichment. The fact that the founders believed in the pursuit of wealth by any means necessary (ie. slavery, exploitation of workers) and that these same founders are revered by men like Mr. Wedell shows their level of hypocrisy when they turn around and scowl at hispanic immigrants for doing the same.

Parrish Art Museum plans to break ground in Water Mill this summer

Well said Elliot, and I think the mayor is right. What happens to the current Parrish probably is the most important decision his administration will make. But to your point, here's to hoping another museum moves into the space that "ACTUALLY" supports local artists and fresh voices on the east end. " Jul 1, 10 11:09 AM
