Local leaders remain hesitant over ambitious project

The 'griping' that the locals do here makes for a much more desirable place to live, than say, uhmm, Bayshore.

The locals here take care of ourselves just fine and that is what makes this area desirable; not casinos or other stupid things for tourists to do. " Nov 12, 08 5:04 PM

Frisicano reverses decision to retire

What a loss! Joan Friscano has done wonderful things for this community.

But really, who can blame her? Obviously her 'bosses', the Board of Education, did not support her. That was proven when they chose to ignore the recommendations of the community, parents, students and fellow educators and hire Dr. Gratto in a closed door meeting.

Let's review why hiring Dr. Grotto must have been such a slap in the face to Ms. Friscano:

He was fired from AuSable Valley School District in 1998 for failure to write performance reviews.

He then worked for Brittonkill School District but left because he wanted a 'bigger school district.' Brittonkill is about twice the size of the Sag Harbor district.

He then hopped over to Ballston Spa Central School, but alas, his contract was not renewed. Obviously, not doing a 'stellar' job.

Great job BOE. " Nov 14, 08 2:55 PM

Town employee suspended for racist messages referring to the president-elect

I am not sure what the difference is between writing a racist text message or merely forwarding a racist text message. It's wrong either way, really wrong. Whether he got the message from a co-worker, boss, friend, or whoever, call a spade a spade, it's wrong.

Suggesting the reporter of this article has done something to personally ruin Mr. Judy and his family's holiday is bizarre. Do you honestly think there is some big conspiracy between the town and the person trying to get their son-in-law a job and this reporter? Give me a break Bosetta is obviously reaching out to hear Mr. Judy's story. So, Mr. Judy, what's up? Let's hear your defense.

Restaurants will have to list prices for specials

Is this a joke? I have never heard of anything so stupid in my life. What a waste of time and resources.

Honestly, if you are that tight with money, and you don't see a price on a special board and order it without asking, it's your own damn fault if it's over your budget.

To claim people are too embarrassed to ask how much something costs leads me to believe that these people can't afford to eat out anyway.

Just one more word from someone working in the 'business' for over 20 years, the customary tip for wait staff is 17 to 20 percent. If you can't do the math, double the tax and add a $1. " Dec 23, 08 1:19 PM

Marienfeld fired as Pierson hoops coach

Thanks for your thoughts about 'our generation', they are actually pretty funny. I'm most certainly from a different generation than you but I can assure you am quite web savvy.

Try not to make assumptions about adults and 'us adults' will try not to make assumptions about 'you teenagers.'

A blog is an online diary where people post their thoughts and others have the ability to make comments about it; i.e. the Olsen twins new obsession with leg warmers even though they are quickly becoming a fashion out.

This arena, in contrast, is a news forum where people can post their opinions about a story written by a journalist. There is a big difference between the two. Can journalists have blogs? Sure, but not all bloggers are journalists. I'd venture to say most are not journalists.

Either way, you may not understand it now, but you are very lucky to live and attend a school where community members are passionate about issues that happen there. And I am sure this will be more than addressed at the next school board meeting. You should attend." Feb 4, 09 3:52 PM

Supervisor has bone to pick over councilwoman's dog

Ms Kabot, to claim you don't want to bring up something 'petty' because it would cause further 'dysfunction?' Then, why did you?

You're not your sister's keeper? Well I do think you are in charge. Seems like you could have quietly mentioned this to Ms. Throne Holst when it first came to your attention and she would have obliged.

Whether you like it or not, any management job, and I am assuming that's what a Town Supervisor position is considered, requires dealing with petty and other kinds of issues. It's not above you, nor are you too important to do it.

But instead, Ms Kabot, you now look like a complete petty idiot who is obviously trying to divert the attention away from your poor performance as Supervisor. Good plan.

Some opposition to proposed farmers market in Southampton

Ms. Jane Q,

Backtrack all you want, but your blatant racism is really shining through.

If you are unable to communicate with someone at a store, ask for the manager. If still don't get the results you desire, don't shop there anymore. It's pretty simple.

Guarantee if that was an Irish face giving you the 'dumb stare' instead of a brown face, you'd have different feelings.

Immigrants are here in this country, legally or not, so they can provide a better life for themselves and their families. Did your relatives immigrate here speaking perfect English? I doubt it.

" Mar 19, 09 10:23 AM

Your grandparents came here and had to assimilate to this country, which means learning the language and the customs. Did that happen overnight?

It didn't in my family, we still speak an Italian/English combo when we're together, and my family has been here since 1920.

So, why in the world would you make the assumption that immigrants here now aren't doing the same thing as your grandparents? ie, learning the language and customs.

Furthermore, why do you think an immigrant wants you to speak their language? Where have you encountered this phenomenon?

Could you answer these questions for me? Then maybe I'd understand why you don't consider yourself racist. " Mar 20, 09 9:37 AM

Questions abound over resort motel

Such mixed feelings about this!

1) Not that the answer is reconstruction but let's be honest, that place looks like an eyesore now and it always has.

2) As private mentions above, it would create some jobs. However, are these jobs going to be filled by local, east end carpenters, plumbers, builders and etc.? Or are we just going to be adding to the never ending trade parade that arrives here each morning from all points west.

3) We need to protect the remaining land that we are privileged to still have. Couldn't this be rebuilt using relatively the same footprint as now? Please, don't clear any more lots. We need trees! White pines or otherwise.

4) Is this going to turn into some kind of bar/scene? Does Ms. Overby have a point? Is there zoning in place that will prevent this from happening.

5) Is this a sustainable business in these economic times? Is there a need for a high end resort? Is there a need for yet another business that will not be able to survive off season and do nothing to enhance the lives of the local, year round community? Is this going to be half built and stopped? Is this going to be built and then be put up for sale?

" Apr 8, 09 10:59 AM

I highly doubt that someone's priority for serving on a town planning board is to drive entrepreneurs away from the area. I also think it's pretty insulting to make a generalization that have 'big heads' and don't understand their jobs. Personally, I salute anyone who wants to slow growth in this area. How many more empty storefronts, unoccupied, unsellable, unrentable buildings, homes and businesses do we need out here?

I think asking questions about how a property is going to be used or managed after development is the definition of thinking ahead; i.e. the plans for the property, right? Isn't that what the planning board should be doing? If that means they are over-stepping their authority by asking some tough questions I'm all for it.

I would rather have a board that acted in that manner rather than the alternative, living a area that either didn't have planning board or did nothing to protect the integrity of that area; i.e. Naples, Florida. Definitely a nice place, in a strip-mall/condo/overdeveloped/pre-planned community type of way." Apr 8, 09 1:02 PM

Alternatives sought after village shuts down Southampton Tire soup kitchen

Ok, here we go again.

J. Totta: Why would you assume The Sisters of Mercy are only helping 'illegals'? The Sisters of Mercy is a Catholic volunteer organization that helps those who are impoverished and in need. They certainly are not turning away anyone.

What kind of Christian charitable organization do you know of that requires proof of citizenship from a person before they will help them. Should that be part of their mission? And what, someone is not legal so they should be turned away? Really? Come on.

Crankypants: I would love to know what message you teach your children. If you feel it's so unsafe at the 7-11, why on earth would you go there with them? Shop elsewhere.

To think the men at the 7-11 are going to be able to have the means to hire and pay a lawyer in the unlikely event that they got sick off of food that was given to them is ludicrous. Do some research and let me know the last time that happened, if ever. Oh, and one more thing:

Use there when referring to a place.
Use their to indicate possession.
They're is simply short for they are. " Apr 8, 09 4:39 PM

These posts make me so sad.

Anti-illegal immigration protester reports car window smashed, sign stolen

I can't condone vandalism, but I have to admit I am unable to wipe a GIANT smile off my face at the thought of this.

I love this quote: “I’ve been harassed and intimidated here many times." I have personally witnessed Tom Wedell intimidating, confronting and mocking a group of Latino men one morning. These men did nothing to him.

This man spouts such hatred, racism and anger each morning, what does he expect, roses and love letters? What come around goes around Mr. Wedell, and if I were you, I'd brace myself. " Apr 14, 09 5:04 PM

Poor economy exacerbates persistent East End tension over immigration

AlwaysLocal you are incorrect, on many points actually, but your claim that people file taxes are 'here legally or they are committing identity fraud' is really off the mark.

If you do not qualify for a Social Security number the IRS will grant you an ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) and that is what you use to file your taxes. It is not valid for identification purposes and you don't have to prove citizenship to get it.

http://www.irs.gov/individuals/article/0,,id=96287,00.html " May 4, 09 2:20 PM

You didn't know about the ITIN cards until today, but now of course you are suggesting that the people standing on the side of the road don't have them?

Just like in your previous post where you suggested people here without legal status don't file taxes or are claiming identity fraud. The latter being close to the most ridiculous thing I've seen in these posts so far." May 4, 09 5:12 PM
