Health care reform bill gets mixed reviews on East End

Now local politicians are using RNC talking points? I wish you had asked Mr. Wruck to actually explain how "it's costing people every day their jobs" - and then ask him if he learned English from Yoda" Mar 31, 10 10:42 AM

Southampton Town looks to confer authority of peace officers on code officers

My gut response is that this sounds like a terrible idea. Doing this would place entirely too much power in the hands of code enforcement officers, not to mention that an additional 35 hours of training sounds like an extremely insufficient amount of time. I think those on the right and left (for different reasons) will agree that this would be an unwelcome intrusion. " Mar 31, 10 1:15 PM

Health care reform bill gets mixed reviews on East End

Corporations are complaining because this legislation ends years of corporate welfare. Yes, it will cost them more, but they are being disingenuous as to why.

Ryan Grim has reported the following: "Under the previous system, major corporations were subsidized by the government to provide prescription drug coverage to their retired employees. At the same time, corporations could claim on their tax returns that it was they -- not the taxpayers -- who paid for the drug coverage, and could write the expense off as a tax deduction.

Health care reform cuts out that fat. The corporations still get taxpayer money to help pay for their drug coverage, but they can no longer continue the fiction that they're using their own money to do it. "" Mar 31, 10 3:36 PM

Alliance and Empire reach agreement; both sides say they're pleased

If the CEO's salary is tied directly to denial of coverage and death to anyone not willing or able to pay yearly premium increases of 30 to 60% for decreased coverage then I would say $1.50/day for their entire prison sentence sounds about right." Apr 6, 10 1:17 PM

Congressman Bishop prepares for difficult race but remains hopeful for outcome

Templar, there is really nothing to be gained by the type of hatred and anger exhibited in two of your previous comments. I appreciate that you have the guts to admit it was over the top. The current political discourse is not helpful. You say "this is not how our system is supposed to work." I respectfully disagree. Mr. Bishop is a duly-elected representative. The people voted him into office to do exactly what he has been doing, and that includes voting yes for health care.

As for him hiding away, not true. I went to one of Mr. Bishop's town halls a few months ago at the Rogers memorial library and the streets were lined with angry protesters shouting profanities and carrying signs that were completely out of bounds, as is always the case when the congressman goes to speak. Inside the meeting there were any number of "right-wing" opponents to Mr. Bishop including a young man in the front row who started out the evening being extremely disrespectful. He clearly was not a fan of congressman Bishop and, despite a number of attempts by moderators to get him to follow the rules (comments on a note card), he kept directly challenging Mr. Bishop. The congressman did not ignore or dismiss him, but instead directly answered the man's questions and, by the end, he had not won over a new voter, but he had certainly won this young man's respect.

To compare this congressman or any other to a "a pedophile at a school playground" is, in my opinion, disgusting. The moderator of this board did not remove it, but I wish he had because when you speak that way, you are giving permission to the crazies out there. That comparison is so over the top, that I believe it could promote violence against the congressman.

It is one thing to have thoughts of your own, but quite another to ignore the responsibilities that come with free speech. Again, I find you words to have been completely inexcusable, but it does take a courageous person to apologize and you have. Thank you.

Tell that to the mine workers who lost their lives in West Virginia recently. All major mine accidents in the US have been at non-union mines. Why make such a broad statement of condemnation of all unions?

Local Tea Party movement holds two rallies on Tax Day

Early on in the tea party movement it was decided that those sympathetic to the the party cause should "mail a tea bag to congress" Soon afterward, tea party members began referring to themselves as "teabaggers" and carrying signs that read "teabag congress".

These self-described "teabaggers" may have been unaware of the sexual connotation of that phrase, but they did use it freely and often so I don't see why it should be considered offensive for non-teapartiers to refer to them in the same vernacular.

Rally held to support push for federal immigration reform

I attended this rally and I was pleased to see so many concerned, thoughtful, and intelligent residence who realize the importance of immigration reform. Part of the legislation currently on the table includes stemming the flow of immigrants over our borders and cracking down on employers as well as offering those currently here a pathway to citizenship that recognizes their years spent living and working here as productive and peaceful members of our society.

The success of our economy depends upon the availability of immigrant workers, just as it always has. I do not know why the minutemen and other anti-immigrant protesters (most of whom come from outside of our town) fight reform, but if they want the federal gov't to act, they should join those of us calling for reform, not fight against us. Thoughtful legislation can achieve the goals of both sides while remembering that we are a country of laws, yes, but that we are also a country of immigrants. " May 5, 10 12:46 PM

Forum on proposed Tuckahoe shopping complex planned for June 1

If you live in this district, if you have kids at Tuckahoe, you have to attend this meeting and make your voice heard. This "Tuckahoe Main Street" project should not be allowed to happen. We must convince town and village officials not to allow this change of zoning. If they want to build affordable housing, great, but not this monstrosity, especially given the availability of existing empty retail space throughout our district. " May 26, 10 1:58 PM

We cannot make every single decision based upon tax base and traffic flow. If you look only at the size of the proposed parking lot the environmental impact from water runoff alone outweighs any possible tax benefit.

You do not solve a traffic issue by simply moving the traffic elsewhere.

The impression most of us have of the Town Board and the Planning Commission is one of corrupt favor-trading. They need to prove otherwise by denying this change of zoning. " May 27, 10 2:30 PM

Crowds come to discuss project proposed in Tuckahoe

I attended this meeting. A very strong turnout and everyone who spoke was indeed AGAINST this proposed monstrosity.

Bridget Fleming and Jim Malone both spoke and both attempted to mislead by saying we are in the very early stages of this proposal. Not true. This has been under consideration for over three years now.

I found it very interesting that not one of the developers in attendance that evening even attempted to defend themselves. Either they feel they already have the Town board in their pockets, or they realize their proposal is indefensible.

If you live in Tuckahoe and care about your community and your property values, you will fight this at every turn." Jun 3, 10 1:18 PM
