Poor economy exacerbates persistent East End tension over immigration

Please remember that the people who are making the REAL profit from the cheap labor are the business owners and contractors. When are we going to add them to this conversation? Most are members of the Southampton business alliance and make political contributions to the Republicans. Yet, the “anti-immigrant” groups place blame on the Democrats…like our congressman. It is construction and landscaping day jobs that keep the day laborers at 7-11. Perhaps the guy with the flag should be logging the names of the businesses who are hiring the day laborers. Let’s cross reference those businesses with their contributions to political candidates and we will find out why our Republican dominated Southampton town government has done NOTHING about this issue.

If businesses do not hire them, they will leave at no cost to any level of government.
" Apr 29, 09 8:48 AM

With everything that is being said here, very few of you all have any problem with the AMERICAN citizens who are doing the hiring of these people. Let’s make the contractors and landscapers who are hiring day laborers more accountable.

If no one hires the illegals, they will go home at no cost to the taxpayer.

Brewer steps down as FRNCA president

Mr. Brewer should seriously consider some kind of run for town hall. He has what it takes. Mike, your community is better for your efforts. Thank You." Apr 30, 09 10:25 PM

“Terry” you are quick to protest...I believe that a nerve has been struck. The fact is that those who benefit from the day laborers are not being held accountable for their actions or for the profits realized from hiring the day laborers. In the meantime, if one gets hurt ,the contractor drops him off near the hospital for treatment and we pick up the tab.
I have been down there, I have seen the trucks with "support our Troops" stickers hiring workers, I wish that they would support our workers too. Also look into the trucks of certain politically active companies, and they do partake in questionable hiring and they are making profit. I am sure that they do not want their names on this blog....Do you think that they would want to go there?
So folks remember this when politicians, like Bishop, are being bashed, they are taking a practical approach to this situation…at least they are addressing this, as opposed to turning a blind eye as many on the far right do.

If no one hires the illegals, they will go home at no cost to the taxpayer.

" May 1, 09 8:52 AM

Terry…even though “truth” is an absolute defense against libel I will not name specific companies and individuals because of the difficult nature of proving that companies are partaking in questionable hiring. The fact is that no records exist to prove the hiring. It is the perfect situation for contractors and landscapers….neither the day laborers nor the owners will ever admit to this, nor do they have any paperwork to provide proof.
So you ask for me to provide the smoking gun, proof positive, video surveillance, of contributors to the Southampton GOP who hire these folks. I do not have it. I have only seen this for myself on several occasions and I speak from those experiences. I will however provide the website of contributors to our Southampton GOP for anyone to view and make their own determinations.
In addition to this particular page, one can also see contributions to most of the GOP (and Democratic) candidates as well. If one gets familiar with these lists and drives around the town it becomes abundantly clear what the situation is. Oh, but be careful about asking too many questions on a job site about this issue.
Now, to the real issue, when are the business owners who are doing the hiring going to be made accountable for these practices. How come the guy with the flag and his allies are not saying anything about the business owners who hire day laborers? I simply do not understand why that is not part of this discussion.

If no one hires the illegals, they will go home at no cost to the taxpayer. Work is why they came here, and that is why they are staying here.
" May 3, 09 9:11 PM

Walt writes…"If you bleeding heart liberals want to take care of the illegals, I suggest you invite them over to your house."
Walt...it is not the "bleeding heart liberals" who are keeping the illegals gainfully employed.
Again, why are you not including the contractors and landscapers in this conversation? It seems to me that the business owners who are making the REAL profits are getting a free pass in all of this!

If no one hires the illegals, they will go home at no cost to the taxpayer. Work is why they came here, and that is why they are staying here.

Money designated for affordable housing never moved; housing fund in the red

Let us give credit to Anna Throne-Holst for her continued diligence toward these financial matters. She is the board member who has been asking for accurate accounting for over a year…only to be stone walled by the supervisor. It is because of her efforts that this financial mess was uncovered. Now she has uncovered yet another problem created by this, and past administrations.
Good work Anna!" May 7, 09 11:15 AM

Finances is under the control of the Supervisor…lets not start to include “The Town Board” in this especially it was the board members, Throne-Holst & Pope, who pushed hard to uncover these financial problems. We need to support them so that they can continue to work for the people of the town." May 7, 09 2:24 PM

Kabot says party leaders pressuring her to keep lid on financial woes

Had Anna Throne-Holst not pressed the supervisor on these issues the public would not even know about it. Now we have Sally Pope doing the same...thanks to both of you. " May 14, 09 8:46 AM

Let us remember the new (expanded without board approval) Justice court, the new roof on town hall (slate), and the improvements to Terisa Kiernan's office. All of this was ordered by the supervisor and completed when the town was MILLIONS in debt. Thank goodness for Anna Throne-Holst who would not let up on these financial issues. She is the reason why this all became public." May 14, 09 11:31 AM

Southampton Town restructures its finance department, hires new comptroller

This is what Anna Throne-Holst proposed earlier this year. We could have save time, and money, if we listened to her. Now let's watch Linda Kabot make this the center piece of her campaign." May 22, 09 5:56 PM

We have lost confidence in Mr. Brautigam, and the board has (finally) reached a consensus that he should no longer be the comptroller. We cannot keep this person in this important position to save money...that would lose money. I understand your gripe with this but, he is a CIVIL SERVANT and can not be easily let go…like the real world. The guy must go, and it should have been done months ago like Anna proposed.
As far as Mr. Nuzzi, he was a board member when the problems were being created. Where was he then? Throne-Holst has flushed these financial problems out, Pope is pushing for accountability and Nuzzi is NOW going to be financially responsible. We sure could have used that type of responsibility a couple of years ago.
" May 23, 09 10:13 AM

diy-guy…I was incorrect by saying that Comptroller Steve Brautigam was a civil servant. You are absolutely correct by saying he is appointed. By being an appointed official, he is guaranteed his salary for the rest of the year and cannot be just let go (he has to agree with this move). Wright is employed by the town so by moving Brautigam to an existing and funded position at a lower salary and plugging in Wright as comptroller is a municipal shuffle that needs to happen. This needed to happen…months ago. The town has to get its financial house in order.
Why does councilman Nuzzi not understand this? When has he stepped up with creative solutions to help the people of the town? In fact, he was on the board under Heaney when this whole mess was being created. My sense is that he is in a reelection and needs to say that he did something…anything…so now he will mislead the people of the town.
You are not the only one banging their head against the wall

GOP passes over Kabot; nominates Conservative Party chair

INS...It was Throne-Holst who persisted in uncovering the financial problems of the town. The current supervisor stonewalled her for months. Had it not been for A-T-H the people would still be in the dark. Why the heck didn’t Nuzzi, Grabowski or Kabot for that matter press the financial issues years ago? Because they would never cross their own party member…you know the party that is running the town. A-T-H is experienced, well educated and is not party affiliated…she is a “blank”. This town needs a real change in leadership, and I hope that she runs." May 24, 09 4:29 PM

Kabot says town in the process of correcting fiscal crisis

Anna Throne-Holst forced this issue into the public light. She pursued this financial issue for a year and was stonewalled by the supervisor for that time. I hope that she runs...this town needs a real change in leadership....not the same old GOP still running the town. We need a town government that operates in the sunshine rather than in the Republican committee." May 25, 09 8:04 AM

Southampton Town restructures its finance department, hires new comptroller

If the town "fires him", Brautigam still gets his salary until the end of the year. The General services position existed...this was a necessary municipal shuffle the needed to happen along time ago. Where the heck has Nuzzi been...where are his creative solutions. He came from Brookhaven to our town and presided over the biggest financial mess-up in our history and now he is going to bee fiscally responsible...it is a bit late for that." May 25, 09 1:43 PM

Ha...that's funny...no I am not a Shinnecock. I've been following this, and the position existed but was never filled...the position existed, was funded, but was not filled. The reporter got it wrong...or is a bit confused...perhaps by Nuzzi's obvious electioneering. It would be nice just to give Brautigam his walking papers but we still would be paying his salary. So either we keep him and nothing changes or we move him to get someone who knows how to run the finances of municipal government." May 25, 09 9:21 PM

Nuzzi was on the board under Heaney…and Kabot. Where was his leadership then? Why didn’t he ask the necessary questions then? It took Throne-Holst to persist and get these financial problems public for Nuzzi to even notice. He as demonstrated that he does not understand municipal government by letting this financial mess develop under his watch and now he is publically criticizing a necessary move in town hall…Nuzzi does not understand how to get things accomplished in town government. He is pandering to get votes rather than effecting real change in town government. Yea…he learned politics in Brookhaven!" May 28, 09 11:23 AM

Kabot says town in the process of correcting fiscal crisis

"It is undisputed that these financial shenanigans happened in 2002, 2003, and 2006 during Skip Heaney's Republican administration before Kabot's time.
Blaming Kabot for the accounting sleights of hand when she didn't have a hand in these secret, deliberately misleading financial reporting"

Well.....Kabot was on the town board during those years. Didn't she pick it up? Why was she stonewalling Throne-Holst, who was demanding financial answers, for almost a year?" May 28, 09 12:25 PM

Throne-Holst to lead Southampton Democrats' November ticket

Thank goodness Anna Throne-Holst for tossing her hat into the ring.
We need real leadership who will make decisive decisions on behalf of the people of the town. Anna has uncovered this financial mess and now we have the opportunity to put her in the Supervisor’s seat. Throne-Holst has some resume…two masters' degrees from Columbia in management and administration…who knew?
" Jun 1, 09 11:41 PM

Had it not been for Anna Throne-Holst we would have never even known about the problems in town hall. In fact, if it were not for ATH, Malone would have never been able to get the GOP nomination. Let's not elect the same (GOP) people who created our problems, let's elect candidates who will bring a new style of leadership in town hall, a style which works for the people of the town rather than the same GOP people who work for the leaders of the Republican Party." Jun 2, 09 7:43 PM

Again....The people of Southampton Town would not even know about the financial problems without Anna Throne-Holst. She has pushed for fiscal accountability....and will follow through when she is elected as Supervisor.
The problems with the town cannot be fixed by putting the same new Republicans back in office. I agree with you when you say she is not a "Super hero". Few people in life are. A-T-H is a public servant who works on behalf of the people of the Town, and from what I have seen, she makes her decisions on what is best for the Town of Southampton rather than working for the leaders of the Republican Party. Who have really been running this town.
" Jun 3, 09 9:33 AM

I am impressed with the credentials and experience of the Democratic ticket. Fleming…a bureau chief of the welfare fraud unit in the Manhattan DA’s office, and A-T-H’s and Pope’s education, not to mention what ATH and Pope have already done on the town board. These are quality professionals.
I am looking forward to knowing the education and backgrounds of the Republican candidates.
" Jun 3, 09 2:19 PM

Fleming's experience at routing out corruption in government is a perfect fit for our town. She was a Bureau Chief in the Manhattan DA’s office. Sounds to me like she will excel as a Southampton town councilwoman. Let’s keep sight of what is important, and that is electing the most qualified people to run town hall. The Slate of Throne-Holst, Pope & Fleming is an awesome ticket that will bring government back to the people of the town and add a sense of much needed professionalism to Town Hall. The culture in the Southampton Town Hall must change….be excited; electing this slate is a good thing for the town." Jun 3, 09 10:32 PM

Democrats nominate a newcomer for Town Board

Why would the Town Trustees ever even say that they would make such a land-swap? " Jun 25, 09 10:12 PM

Candidate says invitations at work were a mistake

This is an example of how it has been in Southampton Town Hall. For years, the Republicans have thrown ethics out the window and used their positions to keep their people in power and will continue to do so.
Look below to see why this family is so vested in keeping their people in power.

Connect the dots (Republicans/Conservatives)
1. Terry Flanagan(Jim Malone's Vice-chair of the SH Town Conservative Party, member SHT Conservation Board, McGann's campaign manager)
2. Jen Stearns (Terry's Daughter, SH Town Hwy Dept employee)
3. Dawn Flanagan(Terry's wife, SH Town Justice Ct employee)

Frank....you have got to see the impropriety in all of this.

" Jun 30, 09 10:30 PM

This man, McGann, did not know what his campaign was doing and he wants to be Highway superintendent? That does not say very much for his ability to manage. It seems pretty lame to me.
I particularly find the comparison of this as a "mole-hill" interesting because moles work underground and the damage is not evident until it is too late. Is this how McGann will run our Highway Department?
This is a bad omen for this candidate.
" Jul 1, 09 11:47 AM

Lil plains....I understand where you are coming from but it is a bit of a cop-out to say "they are all clowns". We have a duty to not let government run away from the people. For too many years the town has been controlled by a group of well connected Republicans. They dominate ALL of the boards in the town and determine much of our lives. Our town needs more input from all of the people in the Town of Southampton.
As for this situation with McGann, we must challenge this kind of violation of Ethics....it shows how he will be in government. That is if he is elected...by the people.
I am liking Gregor as highway superintendent more and more after reading all of this.

Police deficit the result of town officials' mismanagement, report says

Mr. R... says, "As you stated the Supervisor is the Chief Financial Officer of the town and it was the then supervisor’s responsibility. The blame should fall on them."
So according to what you are say Anna Throne-Holst was smart enough to call for and demand a forensic audit as a council woman but Kabot, and Nuzzi for that matter, did not recognize the sad state of affairs while they were council people.

Thank goodness for ATH!!

I hope that the voters have noted this and will vote accordingly." Jul 18, 09 9:44 PM
