East End still digging out after record snow

It is now Tuesday, December 22nd, Ponquogue Avenue in Hampton Bays is still a massive disaster. It looks like there was a couple of passes with a plow and that was it. I know friends whose street wasn't plowed nor had seen a snow plow as of 2:00pm Monday. Not one streets looks salted or properly plowed in any way shape or form. It is a sad state of affairs, because I blame our local government for this botched up mess." Dec 22, 09 10:21 AM

Hampton Bays school budget includes 18.5 percent tax hike

As people have stated, the actual tax increase is not 18.5% but closer to 6.7%. The district is losing money from federal funding and grants, not from spending increases. How about the people on this board meeting some of the graduating class of 2010, there many bright and wonderful students who have been getting a fantastic education from HBHS. Many, many of the 140 students graduating this year are going to great colleges and will be representing our little community all over the US. Our teachers work hard, take money out of their own pockets for extras for the kids, and our kids are the better for their teaching. The State has mandated many classes for the students and cannot be cut unless you have legislators change the laws. You must all realize that electricity prices, oil prices, gas prices and all manner of products have been raised, so to be able to keep the school running they have to raise their rate to cover costs." Southampton Town officials revisit idea of charging clubs for additional police presence

What I find amazing about some of these comments, are from people who turn to these establishments when they need political fundraisers. These establishments are used throughout the year for political fundraisers, help this person fundraiser, school fundraisers but yet they get bashed as quickly! People commenting say these clubs don't bring any extra economy into this town, well my friends you are very wrong. Most of the people that go to these clubs have rental homes out here, they shop in our stores, the frequent the deli's the restaurants and buy goodies from all the local stores. I know that Boardy Barn has over the years taken care of the Wild by Nature parking lot for years. The owners have donated the scoreboard for the high school, they have paid for many of the extras that have been added to the schools at no expense to the tax payers. The Boardy Barn have been there for 40 years and prior to that it was there for over a dozen years prior as a local eatery. The Boardy Barn is open one day a week in the summer from 4 - 8pm. The music can't be bothering you late into the night because they aren't open. People complain to complain and the people doing most of the complaining have spent their youth in that place and then have used that same place for all of their fundraisers. Stop being hypocrits!" Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield Confirms Plan To Drop Most Small Group Plans In New York

This is a huge blow to small businesses. We have a small business, nine employees, we provide health insurance, which our employees pay a portion. Since I handle making the decisions regarding the health insurance choices every year, I have watched our rates rise as much as 25% in a single year. The economy as it is, we can't raise our rates or we lose customers, but all of our expenses have increased two-fold. Now with this decision by Empire, it destroys our chances for affordable decent health insurance. If we don't provide health insurance, we will be taxed, if we do provide health insurance, the rates are so crazy, it's a scramble to make sure we can pay. IF you are a SMALL business owner - then you know how problematic this decision by Empire is." Nov 9, 11 9:55 AM

Town Leans On Rumba; Board Appoints Hearing Officer For Tumbarello

@ bb, are you kidding me?! Rumba doesn't have parking on the street, they have satellite parking, so there is not too many cars. You must be the PITA on Canoe Place Road causing all the problems for Rumba. Rumba happens to be a wonderful addition to Hampton Bays. It employs many of the Hampton Bays High School graduates that work during the summer to help pay for their colleges, it brings in much needed commerce, they pay their taxes, they pump their septic system every 4 days, there is NOT ONE restaurant that does this besides them.

I am mentioning the septic issue, if it is such a problem for that area, then why the hell are the condos still there? That's alot of septic "traffic" right there. Stop trying to destroy a small business! That's what Hampton Bays has always been about, small businesses employing locals and working hard to sustain families so that we can continue to live here. Or bb are you for making our wonderful little hamlet a ghost town with boarded up businesses?
" Jul 13, 12 4:43 PM

@ Luckyflagg, I am right there with you. "mr. local" needs to stop this nonsense at once. I bet he is hoping the business will close so he can snatch up another property on Canoe Place Road. I also believe he is using his "position" to get this pushed and that is wrong!" Jul 14, 12 2:03 PM

bb - there has been a restaurant on that site for years, prior to Rumba it was margaritaville, what fishing station?! Rumba is taking care to make sure there isn't a septic issue by having it pumped out every 4 days. And if you read someones comment above me and as well as watch the town meeting on line - the Supervisor gave the pumping information. What are you talking about they don't adhere to the stop signs? And if you coming flying around that corner then you need to learn to slow down.

If you aren't local then you don't know how this town works. There is a certain person who doesn't like this restaurant and he wants to put this wonderful restaurant out of business and he is doing it from his position in the town.

And trust me, most locals very much like this restaurant. Canoe Place road isn't some winding dark road, where are you driving? There is some wind but it is further up towards Montauk Highway. I will agree with the Supervisor of the town when she stated that Rumba IS being targeted with selective enforcement. Many other restaurants have the same violations and nothing is being done about them. So before you think I am making stuff up, watch the town meeting, then get back to me - kk silly bb!" Jul 14, 12 6:32 PM

bb- I was born in Southampton Hospital, my family has been here for four generations, my daughter is the fifth generation. So yes, I have been around a very long time, but thank you for asking. Since I live off Argonne Road, I spend alot of time driving Canoe Place Road. Feel free to watch the town meeting, there was quite a bit of concern by the Town Supervisor that this was selective enforcement. check the July 10th meeting, it's online dear :).

The newer establishment is called Cowfish, which is a different style of restaurant than Rumba. I have no problem "slinging accusations" as you say, as any local knows what has been happening and its been the talk of the "local town" for awhile." Jul 14, 12 9:05 PM

It isn't a NIGHT CLUB. It is just a restaurant. They close by 11:00 pm, so where did you get this information that it is a night club? Since bb said I didn't know the origins of the building, I asked my uncle who is much older than I am. This building's origins started as a welding shop over 65 years ago. Then old man Bradley bought it and it was a fishing station before I was born. Then it became a seafood store, a row boat rental over the last decade or so it has been a restaurant.

There is NO night club at this location, only a restaurant that is enjoyed by the locals of Hampton Bays and they employ many Hampton Bays High School graduates that work there in the summer to help pay for their colleges." Jul 16, 12 10:05 AM

bb - this building was a fishing station before I was born and it was owned by Mr. Bradley and please realize the building's original purpose was as a welding shop." Jul 16, 12 10:06 AM

Building Inspector Warns That Historic Quogue Home Could Fall Down

The "developer" doesn't care about preserving this building. It wouldn't surprise me that the "renovations" are intentional as to make it unstable and collapse. Then he can say "oops oh well" now I will build another house over it. Don't forget he wanted to tear the building down just a couple of years ago." Jul 26, 12 10:31 AM

Rumba Owners Are Trying To Walk A Fine Line

Where do you get your information regarding locals not being hired by David Hersh? My daughter works there and is a Hampton Bays HS graduate as well as many of the employees there are. Also, there are Mercy graduates there too. He has been employing locals for a long time, so you information regarding his hiring practices are incorrect. David has bent over backwards to appease his "neighbors" but it is one "neighbor" in particular that is causing most of Mr. Hersh's problems. I agree with the Supervisor that this appears to be selective enforcement as every restaurant here runs over capacity during the summer, as that's how most families keep their heads above water in the winter months. Abuse of power in the Town is what is causing most of Mr. Hersh's problems." Aug 1, 12 1:03 PM

Oh Captain Sig, thank you for posting this! I also know the one "neighbor" in a politicial position that has been causing all of Rumba's problems. I have been trying to get the word out about it and I'm glad other people are finally posting about it also :)" Aug 1, 12 1:05 PM

Thiele Joins Effort To Close Hampton Bays Nightclub

This can be said about every town in the united states that has a summer crowd - what is your point? Only things happen in Hampton Bays?! Are you just a summer bigot of our little hamlet that does alot of wonderful things? If you don't like it LEAVE!" Aug 6, 12 12:09 PM

Reallocal (giggles), better check your statistics hon, Bridgehampton (where you tag yourself) has the same amount of crime that Hampton Bays does, along with Westhampton Beach (not going to mention WHB HS), as well as Easthampton, etc ad nauseum. Every village and town has their problems in the summer, you just think picking on Hampton Bays and the working class that really LIVE here makes you better? The people of Hampton Bays are hard working, nice and intelligent people, so please do some research before you try to dump your attitude on Hampton Bays.

Southampton Town Councilman Says Legal Action Could Be In Rumba's Future

bb - how about when ALL the restaurants in Southampton Town follow the laws and not just a SELECT one that lives across from Ed Warner who has created this mess against a nice business. Plus let the Town Board and the TRUSTEES follow the laws also - then you can have both." Aug 23, 12 5:03 PM

bb - it changes everything, because Ed Warner is the one behind this mess. Ask him about his "private street" sign on Carter Road, which is NOT a private road. He had the sign put up there just so people wouldn't drive up "his street". It's funny that the other end of Carter Road at Wakeman is a Town Road with no sign. It's time that elected officials don't use their political position for their own gain." Aug 23, 12 5:07 PM

The neighbor that let the EMPLOYEES of Rumba park on her lawn gave her permission - it wasn't the patrons that parked there - get your information straight. She had no problem with it and liked Mr. Hersh, but her house is next door to Ed Warner - HE didn't like it and HE is the one that started all of this mess against Rumba. Since he is a trustee (which he took his father's spot on the trustees) he thinks he owns that little corner of the road. That building has been a restaurant for over a decade. The problem here is SELECTIVE ENFORCEMENT of laws against ONE RESTAURANT. All the restaurants in Southampton Town run over capacity during the summer. If the Board is going to attack one Restaurant - then attack them all. But that won't happen, Mr. Hersh is the new guy in town and he's getting it so the Board can say "see we did something". And they are only doing it because Ed Warner is pushing it from his political position." Aug 23, 12 5:14 PM

CaptainSig - You are the BEST! Thank you for telling it like it really is regarding Rumba. I knew about the Warners, I didn't realize the Malones jumped on the "I'm going to use my political position" to screw over a positive, family friendly, booming restaurant. Keep up the good work - I'm backing you 1000%!" Aug 23, 12 5:46 PM

@ Prometheus what does ONE fight have to do with anything? Why not mention the shooting at The Public House (in the village of Southampton). Seriously, unless you have been to the restaurant and have seen the place, just shush. It's a very family friendly restaurant with families and friends there every day and night. I happen to frequent the place often and there has NEVER been a problem. My daughter worked there this summer and there was NEVER any problem. Plus if you have been in the place, you would see there really is NO occupancy issue as there is seating outside as well as inside, there wouldn't be a problem if there was a fire. The atmosphere at this wonderful restaurant is very casual and laid back. You hear alot of chatter and laughter. Most people, including myself, have a problem with this being SELECTIVE ENFORCEMENT due to Ed Warner (trustee) who lives across the street and does nothing but use his "political power" to abuse this lovely restaurant. ATH has said herself, Mr. Hersh has addressed every violation and even has an engineer looking into the septic issue to satisfy Malone and Fleming. EVERY SINGLE RESTAURANT, BAR, AND ESTABLISHMENT OF THIS KIND RUNS OVER CAPACITY DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS. But only Rumba is singled out, that is the PROBLEM.
" Aug 24, 12 11:39 AM

Actually Chief you are incorrect with regards to the Hampton Bays School District. The numbers you have seen in Newsday are not the most accurate. If you take the time to really look at the numbers and what isn't stated, let me give you a breakdown: 24% of HB graduates go on to a 4 year school, 67% go to a 2 year or community college, that makes 91% of all Hampton Bays students going to college. With another 2% going into the military and the remaining that don't go to college are usually helping their family business. Please realize that a 4 year college average year is over 50k, many of the families that live here cannot afford that expenditure, it doesn't mean the students are not learned, it means the economic situation for Hampton Bays is making a 4 year college almost unavailable. So many of the students go to a 2 year college then complete their studies at a 4 year college which Newsday DOES NOT factor in. My daughter graduated from Hampton Bays in 2010 and I will tell you that between her and all her friends which was most of the grade, the schools they have gone to: Fordham, St. John's, Seton Hall, St. Joseph's, Oneonta, Albany, Cortland just to name a few. My daughter made Dean's list her first semester at college along with most of her HB friends. So you better make sure you know the real information before you post that Hampton Bays is one of the worst schools on Long Island. I agree with alot of what you say, but in this I will vehemently oppose you." Aug 24, 12 4:25 PM

The aquifers are in the Pine Barrens and Rumba is Nowhere near them. So Malone's statement was stupid on so many points." Aug 24, 12 4:26 PM

go to any restaurant in the summer. I am my source, I don't have to be a reporter to see and understand." Aug 24, 12 4:27 PM

Well as a "people like me", I googled our Aquifers and still my statement stands - Rumba isn't new an aquifer. But thanks for the additional information - I enjoyed reading up on it. So to my statement, what is your point?" Aug 24, 12 5:05 PM

Really bb?! I have no problem naming other restaurants that I know aren't in compliance, but I don't think it would be fair to them to drag them into this. As far as the Trustees not following laws, why does Ed Warner have a "private Road" sign where he lives (on the corner) when the other end of the street doesn't? Why does only the first 30 feet of Carter Road have "no parking" signs when the rest of Carter Road doesn't? I have no problem with facts, and trust me honey I have many facts that go back to when Ed Warner's grandfather was chief of police in Hampton Bays. I don't say anything I don't have proof of. Why don't we start with Ed Warner's favorite restaurant and see what happens?

But I get the feeling bb (you are a friend of his) and you don't want to see family friendly, positive businesses succeed in Hampton Bays. You seem to be so totally against all the small businesses in our wonderful little hamlet? Why is that bb?!" Aug 24, 12 9:54 PM

hahhaha it isn't an unimproved road?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Carter Road is a very much town maintained road! Why isn't there a "private road" sign at the other end of carter road (which the sign says NO thoroughfare) which is a huge lie as it goes to Wakeman Road. Also it is town maintained, so how is only the first 30 feet in front of Ed Warner's home private? Since you are a friend of his, you will stick up for him and say anything regardless of the truth." Aug 24, 12 9:57 PM

@ bb as a spy for Ed Warner?!" Aug 24, 12 9:59 PM

@ Frank Wheeler, I am definitely not a "house frau" as you so stupidly stated. I have worked in the Title industry for over 20 years along with working for attorneys for several more after that - and since I have always been in the real estate end of things, I know about fire marshal capacity vs. code capacity. Since, you think because I am a woman I am clueless, please don't stick your foot in your mouth anymore. Since I know more about town and county records than you can fathom. I know how to read town codes, laws and maps. So please take your mysognist "house frau" comment and bury it." Aug 24, 12 10:03 PM

@ Nature, I am tired of your pointless insults (really carebear?). Even ATH has said she is concerned that this is SELECTIVE ENFORCEMENT. Oh but since you think Frankie is so smart by calline me a house frau that my intellect is less that astute as I am a woman. Since you are obviously friends with Ed Warner, you are on his bandwagon. I am not, as I am a business owner and I don't want to see successful small businesses in Hampton Bays shut down because of political abuse. But hey, you go for the political people doing what they want, when they want and see where it gets you later. I am not stupid, I don't state anything I don't know for sure, but since you think I'm just a stupid woman and don't know any better - keep thinking that if it makes you feel more manly." Aug 24, 12 10:22 PM

@ Frank Wheeler, do you think it was appropriate to call me a "house frau". You meant that in a negative derogatory way, there was no other way to take it. Because I stated something that you disagree with, you felt the need to use insults to attempt to make a point. Because you don't feel I know what I am talking about, so be it, but it doesn't make it so. I am not going to bring other businesses into this, hence I don't name them and what I have seen. So good day to you sir. I have stated my opinions, I have also stated facts. I don't put something down as fact if I don't personally know it.
" Aug 25, 12 8:12 AM

@ Frank Wheeler: I guess you have never heard of Eyewitness Testimony in a court of law pinhead! And for the record, this section is for comments, opinions we are not in a court of law pinhead! So just because you don't like my statements too bad for you pinhead. And with this I am done with pinheads like you." Aug 26, 12 9:12 AM

Ironically Nature, I have agreed with some of your posts and I apologize for thinking you were insulting me with a "nickname". Actually I thought it was kind of cute myself, but since there has been so much bickering and negativity here (myself throwing some of it) I happen to read everything with a negative twist. I am not a friend of the Owner's of Rumba, I have never met Mr. Hersh. I happen to think the restaurant is a positive addition to our little hamlet. It's a family friendly restaurant, the food is great, the service wonderful and it's always a lovely night out for me and my husband. Since I am a small business owner, I want to fight for all the positive businesses in our town, as there is such a negative light shed on Hampton Bays. My grandparents had their business in town, my uncle had his businesses in town and see so many businesses close is sad. I love this town and will fight for every bright spot in it. I hope you understand why I am fighting so strongly for a small business owner. Have a great day :)" Aug 26, 12 3:10 PM

Southampton School District Officials Do Away With Val And Sal

The Val & Sal aren't just the top academic achievers, they are also usually very involved in school civics, athletic programs and usually have an all around amazing school resume. I think this is the stupidest thing the school could do. Kids who have worked hard to achieve excellence in academics are just now tossed aside. We, as parents and as a society, have to stop this "feel good" crap. Why not just give everyone an honors diploma and be done with it, don't make the kids work for anything! Beyond stupid! Real life doesn't work that way." Dec 3, 12 11:01 AM

There is NO team when you are sitting up all night studying for that test to get that 100. The Vals & Sals spend days, week nights, weekends working for the best grades. They are the ones not going out to parties all the time, because they are pushing themselves to be the best in academics in their class. When you go for a job, there is NO team during an interview, you stand alone on your merits and resume. To be Val is to stand alone on all your hard work. Trying to add "team sports analogy" to an individual award just doesn't work." Dec 3, 12 11:17 AM

You act like "weighted" classes are easy courses, they are not. Advanced physics, advanced chemistry, advanced language, etc. It's not underwater basket weaving or toenail clipping. Students choose these additionally hard classes to achieve the pinnacle of the High School success. Vals & Sals work harder and longer to achieve that title, and you want to take it away because it "isn't fair" to the other students. Well then get to studying and then you can achieve it too." Dec 5, 12 12:06 PM

It's the school board that made this decision, not the teachers." Dec 6, 12 12:08 PM

Elimination Of Val And Sal At Southampton High School Meant To Reward High Achievers

In Hampton Bays HS, several Vals & Sals were also Scholar-Athletes. So your point is invalid." Dec 6, 12 12:11 PM

Sir, you seem to miss the point. Taking a weighted class is NOT a luxury, it is an earned choice. When every kid steps into HS, the HS is the "equal playing field" as it were. Whether a child chooses to excel in something is his/her choice, along with PARENTS who are supposed to be helpful and supportive. The "inequality" if that's what you want to call it, comes from the home. True, some kids are smarter than others, and some are better athletes than others, but every single kid has the chance to shoot for Val and/or Sal by working hard, studying hard, making choices that make that possible. There is NO luxury for the Val or Sal that spends hours studying and giving up on outside activities, such as going out with friends, etc. You seem to want every kid to be given an A and patted on the head regardless of their hard work or lack thereof. So I guess YOU missed my point." Dec 7, 12 10:09 AM

Southampton School District Officials Do Away With Val And Sal

No assumption, my first sentence is fact. As for my "feelings" regarding your posts, personally, I could care less, no anger here. You have your opinion and I have mine, hence the two shan't meet. You want everyone to get an A for just showing up, that's your choice. I don't know if you have children or not, but I am a parent and I don't think the school board is making a good choice. My opinion, as for weighted advanced AP classes being harder than regular classes, that is fact not an opinion." Dec 7, 12 10:17 AM

Contractor Horror Story With A Happy Ending

why do you keep deleting my posts, when my posts are correct and your story, as far as the statements made by Jim Reiher are completely false? Isn't the print news supposed to print the truth?" Jan 4, 13 10:10 PM

I feel for the Dykeman's and it's sad what happened. I have re-read this article and something caught my eye "the contractor was also their friend". If you are doing work on your home, hire a contractor, not a friend. Request copies of licenses and at for references, at to look at prior jobs. If they are reputable, there shouldn't be any problem with any of these requests. And yes Nature, this article is very weird as inflamatory statements were removed that had nothing to do with the Dykeman's story. Sadly, it's still in print and many subs are going to suffer for this screw up!" Jan 9, 13 9:37 AM

Wow! Just wow Mr. Sutton! I have this week's press in my hands and there is NOTHING ABOUT ANY CORRECTION to the written article (which you deleted here). Your reporter's lack of fact checking and your deletion of my posts here has now hurt many of the local subs regarding your false portion of the Dykeman story. I can't believe there is NO correction, you even state you were going to print it in this weeks paper. Thanks to your paper we are all starting to lose jobs because you printed a lie!

Rumba Rum Bus Tips Over Following Crash Sunday Night

Ahhh it's that time a year again to pick on successful small businesses in Hampton Bays. The parking lot is TOO SMALL to accomodate the number of vehicles for patrons and EMPLOYEES! The fire marshall and "friends" are there every weekend skulking about due to the wonderful "trustee" that lives across the street wreaking havoc on the Rumba owners. But then again, I guess you all want MORE GOVERNMENT in our lives. As for the sanitary system - IT WAS taken care of over the winter, but don't let facts get in your way Nature. I see you have no problem with the condos being there OVERTAXING the septic systems that do alot more damage than a little tiny restaurant. I guess you must be one of the "trustee's" good friends to start the every year bitch of Rumba. And by the way, only the driver of the Rumbus was slightly injured, but why should you care, he's an employee of Rumba." Jun 30, 13 3:24 PM
