Officials focus on immigration's impact on East End economy

Before immigrant labor, there was migrant labor, men and women came north from the south following the crops. Mostly usually went back home after the harvest was over. Thats how a lot of the east end farms managed as recently as the 70's. The "uneducated", "unskilled" migrant workers became educated and skilled and slowly that source of cheap labor dried up. There will always be a need for "unskilled" worker and there will always be someone to fill that need legally or illegally, the issue at hand is how do we make it a win win for all concerned. Everyone quotes stats...no one comes up with a workable solution. Lets move past the prejudice and misconeptions into serious exploration of a solution. Though I'm sure once the immigration issue is resolved, some of you will find something or someone else, to blame for your percieved lack. " Jun 9, 09 11:24 AM

Power outage hits Southampton Village

Elite? the majority of the people that live in the village of Southampton go to work everyday, just like the people who live in the hamlet of Hampton Bays and I am pretty sure that not to many of them have Central AC, but thier electric bill goes up every summer just like everyone elses. Financial disclosure law went unnoticed in Southampton Village

Some people have a lot of time on thier hands....but it is interesting that the law was passed and everyone forgot about it. Hopefully it was just that, a lapse in memory, and not a deliberate attempt to hide unethical conduct. " Jul 15, 09 9:42 AM

A tragic and shocking end to an immigrant family's American dream

Mr. Truth...did you pay attention to the article you were reading...they are all legal...tax payers...business owners... How about not using this tragic event as a platform to show case your obvious ignorance. This is not about illegal immigration it’s about a sad case of the cycle of physical abuse and substance abuse continuing. Mr. Soto was raised in an abusive household, probably watched his father abuse his mother...his father has a drinking problem Mr. Soto has a drinking problem. Death as a result of domestic abuse happens every day in homes across the country. Restraining orders in place or not. If nothing else, this article is not about praising Mr. Soto, but about highlighting the dangers of domestic abuse. Perhaps just one person will hear or read Blanca's story and get the help they need to get out of the situation. Lastly, growing up, I was taught that if you have nothing good to say, don’t say anything. You might want to head that old axiom Mr. truth." Aug 13, 09 9:38 AM

Southampton Elementary and Intermediate schools' openings will be delayed by hours

Probably because the need to get the classrooms set up and are giving themselves a little extra time to do it. Just in case they are not ready for the regular opening time. I think it was unrealistic of the district to think that they could accomplish major renovations at the Elementary School in 2 months. I drove by there on August 23 and the stairs on the Pine Street side were completely demolished. I knew they were not going to finish in time. But really...a half day delay is not bad if you think about it, It could have been a week delay. " Sep 2, 09 9:08 AM

Obama's speech to students will be shown at EH Middle School after uproar

It is true that back in 1991 Democrats launched a congressional investigation into the expenditures involved with the broadcast of Pres. George H. Bush from Alice Deal Jr. High School in DC. The controversy was not regarding the content of the speech. In fact there was no controversy until after the speech. When an article ran in the Washington Post accusing the President of using the broadcast as a political tool or some form of propaganda...Sound familiar? Those were democrats. Bush Seniors speech was no different than Pres. Obama's.

Politics is a dirty business that is the bottom line. Politicians will take any and every opportunity to further their agenda. Its the nature of the beast that is American Politics. What I find disturbing is that the President of the United States is being demonized, treated as if he is the enemy of the people he was ELECTED to serve. If he is so horrible why on earth did the majority of your fellow Americans decide to elect him.

At the end of his term in the White House, the other side better have something better than rhetoric and fear mongering to offer voters if they have any hope of winning back the White House. " Sep 9, 09 10:21 AM

Quogue women say they were mistakenly doused by Suffolk County Vector Control truck

Bill in Riverhead...ummmm yes she could have run into someone's yard until the truck passed and resumed her walk. I don't think anyone would have had a problem with it. " Sep 9, 09 12:36 PM

Report says anti-immigrant atmosphere in Suffolk County fuels violence

People say that they are against illegal immigration. Fine so am I. The problem comes when these same people paint all Latinos with the same brush. Day Laborer does not equal illegal immigrant. That's the problem with Bigotry...its not based on facts...but rather on perception and fear. No one is saying that illegal immigration is right. However, its not okay to harm someone just because you may think that they are illegal. Its no better than the KKK lynching Negros back in the day. No one cared enough or was brave enough to stand up and say enough, you are wrong, all life has value and is deserving of respect. " Sep 16, 09 4:02 PM

Southampton Village officials move forward in making walkways safer for students

Finally...I remember when there were no side walks on Hampton road once you got to Leland Lane. If you walked to school, you cut across the athletic field between the High School and the Intermdiate School. Hmmm wait a minute...come to think of it there were no side walks on Narrow Lane either. We children of the 70's and 80's managed to get to school in one piece. Still, its a long time coming. " Sep 18, 09 12:41 PM

Homeowners association disgruntled over charity foot race

I read the article, I am curious, this race has been running four years now. This year and angry man yells at kids manning a water stop, and the HOA makes a complaint to the board. Why is it an issue now? Its not about liability, if that was a concern then something should have been brought to the organizers attention 4 years ago. I do not live in Southampton anymore, but I can say, I miss the town I grew up in. Its just not the same anymore. " Sep 28, 09 11:26 AM

Southampton Village replaces Crown Victorias with Chargers

Ford has been talking about discontinuing the Crown Vic for a number of years now. Police forces all over the country are testing out the charger. I've seen a few on the road in my neck of the woods. " Sep 28, 09 3:39 PM

Governor supports Shinnecock Indian Nation in federal appeal

The fake Indians... WOW...ignorance and bigotry are still alive and well in the village of Southampton. I suppose its easier to express these kinds of sentiments when you are sitting at home behind a keyboard. Most cowards wouldnt dare voice that sentitment in front of a memeber of the nation. Walt would you please explain what a real vs fake Indian is? The members of the Shinnecock nation can track their ancestry back to before your ancestors had pot to pee or a window to throw it out of in this country. When they arrived here they brought disease, and treachery and nearly wiped out that nation. Their ancestors died trying to save shipped wrecked settlers...what did your ancestors do? Its past time for this tribe to be recognized. " Sep 30, 09 9:01 AM

Former Southampton Village Police officer's lawsuit against village dismissed

The below paragraph from the article is why Rondo felt the need to post...

"Mr. Platt maintained that the policy was instituted by the chief as a way of getting revenge for an allegation Mr. Platt had made against the chief. Mr. Platt also was listed as a witness in former police officer Christopher Brioch’s Equal Employment Opportunity Commission complaint against Southampton Village regarding discrimination based on race and national origin. Nothing has come of the complaint, but Mr. Platt felt that his status as a witness in it provoked police department officials to target him."

He is letting everyone know that someting did come of his EOC complaint.

Oddone trial begins; opening statements heard Monday

Big and Tiny you have no idea what you are talking about. Andrew was the classic "Gentle Giant" The inmates at the prison where he worked took up a collection for his family when he died. That in itself speaks to Andy's character and demeanor. I went to high school with Andy, even then he was simply a nice guy. However, this poor misunderstood "Kid" has had previous run ins with the law, he was involved in an assault at another bar in upstate NY. Did someone provoke this "kid" then as well? Why is he still being referred to as a kid at the age of 25? What he is, is a mean drunk who can not control himself when he drinks. That is why Andy is dead. Andy, husband, father, and good man respected and well liked by his colleagues and those he was charged with looking after at the Suffolk County Jail. Big...don't comment on things that you know nothing about. Tiny, obviously you have some ties to Mr. Odone, perhaps you are the one who needs to see things clearly, and see your friend for what he is. He murdered someone. He needs to be punished for that." Oct 20, 09 10:05 AM

At Foto from lake grove....Why didn't he let go after it was clear that Andy was incapacitated? Why didn't he let go when people were trying to pull him off? He was not alone, he was there with friends right? Im sure they would have come to his aide if the need arose. You see that's where I loose all sympathy for your "Nice Guy" "Kid" The fact that he would not let go moves his actions from self-defense to murder. There is no excuse for what he did. He went to far now he should pay the price. If he manages to get off which I doubt, he should never take another drink for the rest of his life, obviously, it changes him from a "nice kid" to a violent drunk with a complete lack of self control. " Oct 20, 09 3:16 PM

Tiny talk up someone who works for the state over a college student? A college student with a documented criminal history? Give me a break. Perhaps the Press is biased but at the end of the day, they are not making anything up about Andy, no one is viewing him through rose colored glasses. He was a good man who crossed paths with a drunk who killed him. But we will see what comes out in the trail. We are not a court of law here on this site, just people who knew the kind of man Andy was and want his murderer to be punished. " Oct 20, 09 3:24 PM

Witness recounts fatal struggle in Southampton bar

Sorry Brendan my mistake..." I will not copy and paste from one news website to another again...you guys need to get on the ball though...Newsday has better coverage.I did quote the source which is what you are supposed to do when you are pulling from another publication. I guess those rules don't apply on the world wide web
Anyway...Per an article I read on Newdays website, another patron who was there that night stated that the bouncer ( Andy) politely asked the defendant (Oddone) to stop dancing on the table,The defendant gave him attitude, and cursed at him at which point Andy shoved him off the table. The defendant then jumped on Andy from behind and put him in a choke hold. The witness said Andy's tone was calm and that Oddone was nasty. Hmmmmm sounds like he was embarrassed that he got knocked on his butt and decided to get back at the big mean bouncer.

Yes the truth is coming out... These witnesses have no ties to the community, they have nothing to gain from stating the facts of what they saw that night." Oct 22, 09 5:03 PM

Parents are upset over theft of late son's memorial

Citizen, the child does not rest at the corner where he died, his family and friends are well aware of that. Everyone grieves differently. I wonder if you would be so preachy and without compassion if it were your child struck down like that. A memorial serves many purposes...one is to allow loved ones to grieve, the other is as a reminder that something happened that we should not forget. " Oct 28, 09 10:35 AM
