Hamptons Online sues former publisher, seeking millions in damages

Hmmm.. there could be some merit to this law suit. While the content is completely different, the look of the site is very similar..right down to the logo, and color scheme. To the former employees of hamptons.com now working for hamptonsvue.com, never burn bridges. " May 12, 10 10:21 AM

Rally held to support push for federal immigration reform

The main concern with this law is that people who are Legal American citizens will be targeted simply because they are Hispanic. So you get pulled over for a traffic infraction, and because you look hispanic, or you have an accent, you are asked to produce proof of citizenship. Will they take your license as proof issue your ticket and send you on your way? Please don't say that a drivers license is proof because we all know that drivers licenses can be obtained under false pretenses. Its happened in PA, CT, and yes NY. Will you have to produce your birth certificate? Everyone understands why the law was passed, but the problem comes in enforcement. How can you do it without violating the rights of persons here legally. " May 12, 10 10:34 AM

Southampton School Board suspends high school principal and assistant principal, who are then hired by East Hampton

At the end of the day, its a job. They gave notice. I don't know of to many people that give their current employer a heads-up when they are looking for a job. I guess in the field of education things are done differently. In corporate America, you give two weeks notice. I'm trying to understand why they were suspended with pay. So now they are collecting their salaries, and the district is paying Mr. Barker, and Mr. Dyno at the same time. I'm sure Mr. Dyno will receive additional compensation while acting as interim Principal. Is that a wise financial decision? Oh well is only for a few weeks...I guess I'm wondering what harm there would have been in letting them finish out the school year. " May 20, 10 9:51 AM

Even Principal's are entitled to personal days...and they can do whatever they want on those days including interview for a new position. " May 26, 10 9:15 AM

Vice President Biden visits Southampton over holiday weekend

The President, spoke at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Illinois, Or is Arlington National Cemetery the only place that counts? Vice President Biden was at Arlington. George Bush Sr. Never participated in a memorial day service at Arlington...he was in Italy his first year in office and the rest he spent at his home in Maine. Funny, no one made a big deal about that. " Jun 1, 10 10:15 AM

Its a shame, it seems, it does not matter what this President does. Someone will find a way to place a negative spin on it. President Bush Jr. spent a lot of time in Crawford Texas, no one was harping then. If our current President was Caucasian male named John Smith, instead of an Negro named Barrack Hussein Obama, something as simple as where and how he opted to observe Memorial day would barely receive a nod from the press. I know I'm going to get a lot of race card comments from some of you, but hey it seems to me, that this President is being called out on a lot of things that went unacknowledged when others in that office did the exact same thing... Makes a person go hmmmm.... " Jun 1, 10 10:27 AM

I didnt place a negative spin on Bush I just stated the facts, and the facts are he never attended a Ceremony at Arlington during his entire term. No one made a big deal about it. Sooooo Hmmmmm...." Jun 1, 10 4:08 PM

On the day President Bush took office, the national debt stood at $5.727 trillion. When discussions began about the bank bailout (while Bush was still in office) the national debt was more than $9.849 trillion. That's a 71.9 percent increase on Mr. Bush's watch. Soooooo hmmmmm...." Jun 1, 10 4:14 PM

n 2000, when President Clinton left office, the U.S. was in the black by $236 billion. At the time, number crunchers projected a surplus for at least 10 years.
But just two years later, we were in the red by $158 billion. The aftermath of 9/11 effectively froze the nation's economy. And President Bush enacted his first round of tax cuts.

By 2004, the deficit had more than doubled, to nearly $413 billion. The U.S. had invaded Iraq, and, economists point out, there was another round of tax cuts. By the end of 2008, the banking system was near collapse. Bush signed a $700 billion bank bailout package, and the deficit grew to $438 billion.

Obama took office and enacted the $787 billion economic recovery plan. That brings us to $1.4 trillion in debt...and still counting. That was the number back in February. Add to that the new healthcare bill and the spending that it will require

My point is this. Where were all you citizens when this all started 8 years no ago. No one was demonizing Bush about the spending and the tax cuts and the growing deficit. I guess that's because the effects were not being felt at the time. Now we are all feeling it and I guess the natural reaction is to blame the current Administration. I'm just wondering why what President Obama is doing is so much worse than what President Bush did? The end result is the same a deficit.

Could John McCain have done any better? I doubt it. But I guess his deficit spending would have been more palatable to some because it would not have involved a health care plan. More money on our military actions over seas, I mean the War on terrorism, boosting border security, all these things would be acceptable I guess, except for one small problem where would the money come from? More tax cuts? or Tax increases?

What would all of you do to alleviate this growing deficit? Any ideas? That in a nutshell is what lost Mr. McCain the election. He had NOTHING!!! He could not articulate a plan that would lead to our nations economic recovery. I don't know how this thing is going to play out. I do know that everything takes time. The Great Depression lasted 10 years...it would have probably gone longer had it not been for WWII. I suppose enacting the draft, and pulling people into military service and sending them off to fight terrorism could be an option, volunteer enlistments are down across all of the armed forces. That would cut down on the number of people seeking employment, giving others and increased opportunity for employment...factory work would be plentiful (defense contracts) that would open up opportunities for blue collar workers. Unfortunately that scenario is a repeat of what happened at the end of the Depression. I doubt that will happen again. Soooooo Hmmmmmmm What would you suggest the President do SJD? Shinnecocks expect final word on recognition Tuesday

Congratulations to my Shinnecock friends and family. How sad that so many people are filled with such bitterness towards you. How sad that the actions of a few members of the tribe taint the whole. You are educators, law enforcement officers, business owners, professionals, members of your tribe are out in the world making positive contributions to our communities and communities all around the country.. Unfortunately all most of the people posting on this board know about you is what they read in the Press. I wish the Press would print a headline about some of the good things that happen on the Res. Or write a story about some of the great people that have come from the Res. Then perhaps your neighbors will see what I've always seen. You are the First People, a proud people, Good People and I am truly happy for you. " Jun 17, 10 2:03 PM

Were these front page stories? I've read them all of them. What I've noticed is that negative press about the Rez gets more attention then positive press. I mean a drug bust gets a banner headline...same goes for the Casino... Your headline regarding Federal Recognition leads to an article that focuses mainly on the increased possiblity of a casino. What about the other benefits that come with Federal recognition. Lets see a few paragraphs about that, but I guess thats not sensational enough. Oh and I stand corrected Turkey. " Jun 26, 10 3:34 PM

I challenge the editorial staff of the Southampton Press to produce a front page article about the nation that mentions nothing about the Casino...but explores all the other benefits that federal recogniton will bring to the first people. " Jun 26, 10 3:38 PM

East Quogue woman files $70 million lawsuit against Suffolk County and Southampton Town

She will have to prove that there was in fact $13000 in that bag, she will get something for her trouble but I doubt it will be 70 million she is seeking. As for no longer feeling safe...she should be fine as long as she steers clear of parking at the base. " Jul 29, 10 6:09 PM

Vice President Joe Biden vacations in Southampton

Im wondering why everyone goes on about tax payer expense when the Pres and VP take vacations. I seem to remember GW spending a great deal of time at his ranch in crawford. I believe he had to fly there along with his secret service detail...interesting no one was complaining about that...well almost no one Cindy Sheehan took issue with him vacationing while soilders were dying in Iraq and camped outside his ranch to prove it. I agree with Frank...get your signs together...line up roadside and vent your frustrations. " Aug 1, 10 3:25 PM

Child Care Center Introduces Inclusion Program

What you describe sounds more like a problem child than a disabled child or child with developmental issues. In days gone by, a child with behavioral problems was some times placed in special education classes simply because teachers did not want them in the classroom. Rather than work with parents to solve the behavioral problem they just sidelined them and they were labled as "slow" for the remainder of thier academic career. In most cases these kids were very intelligent. Inclusion works. When its done properly. Usually there is a someone in the classroom besides the teacher to assist the child one on one. Don't confuse developmental issues with behavioral issues. It does a disservice to the child. " Jan 10, 11 3:49 PM

Southampton Village Officials Short On Reasons For Poor Snow Removal

I remember walking to school on roads that looked just like that over twenty years ago. Sidewalks were almost never clear so you had to walk on the road. Its been a lot of years since the east end has had snow like that. Its not always going to be a perfect clean up. Take it slow...and get where you need to go. " Jan 13, 11 7:41 PM

Police Investigate Shooting In Tuckahoe

one problem with that assumption...the victims were not mexican...speaking as a friend of the victims family. Never make assumptions." Jan 18, 11 1:47 PM

You are correct goldenrod, but some people make assumptions based on limited knowledge and stereotypes. The whole story will come out eventually." Jan 18, 11 1:50 PM

What problem are you speaking of? " Jan 18, 11 4:44 PM

Kinda gives you a scary peek in the minds of your neighbors...

I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

One day that dream will come true...hopefully in my lifetime. Its amazing how somethings never change." Jan 18, 11 4:52 PM

THE PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN THAT HOUSE AND WERE ATTACKED ARE NOT MEXICAN OR LATINO OR ILLEGAL!!!!!!!!!!! " Jan 18, 11 7:28 PM

I was born and raised in Southampton and stay in close contact with family and friends who still reside there. That is how I know that the VICTIMS are illegal." Jan 19, 11 12:21 PM

oops are NOT illegal." Jan 19, 11 12:22 PM

Im just wondering if our current Presidents name was John Smith born in Hawaii to an american mother and a dutch father (both white) Reared in and out of the country in countries all over the pacific rim...Im just wondering if there would be any concern over his citizenship. But because he is "black" with an african name, his citizenship is called into question. That is the only reason. Well Dr. King...we have yet to over come. They may not use the N word...but they still think it....They may no longer be Whites only drinking fountains...but there are still some places where people of color...not just black people are not supposed to go. Sad but true we have yet to over come. The new targets are illegals...and towel heads...when I hear those words coming from some people it has a the familiar ring of the N word and it makes me uncomfortable and scared because I know that one of these days there will be another day like March 7, 1965. That same irrational hatred is present today that was present on that day. Its not going to be a mentally deranged person but a mob of fine upstanding citizens defending their way of life...." Jan 19, 11 12:48 PM

My comment was not directed at you, and speaking as person of color it always amuses me when people say that I have friends of all colors...like that is supposed to mean something. Anyway, So will the facts bare out before or after the 2012 election? Or years from now when the President pens yet another biography revealing his great fraud upon the American people. We shall see. " Jan 19, 11 1:46 PM

I never said that he owed black Amercians anything. He was elected President of the United States. He cant do for one citizen without doing for all. I just see a disturbing pattern. You call it race baiting. I call it my opinion. If he was white his birth place would not be an issue. It is what is. We agree to disagree. " Jan 19, 11 3:18 PM

I really do not feel the need to tell you what end of the spectrum I fall into, I will say that I am a huge fan of Alicia Keys, though I do think she needs to take it easy and rest her voice, her tone is not as precise as it once was,but I digress. You seem to have taken what I posted personally...Why is that? Did I strike a nerve? Based on what I've seen posted in this comments section, it is my humble opinion that we black, white, brown, carmel, mocha, yellow, beige, albino, people are a long way from living MLKS dream. " Jan 19, 11 3:28 PM

and soon we will be a communist nation lead by the evil Kenyan Dictator Obama." Jan 19, 11 3:31 PM

lol" Jan 19, 11 7:00 PM

The Obama-Ayers link is a tenuous one. Secretary of State Hilary Clinton has her own, also tenuous, Weatherman connection. Her husband commuted the sentences of a couple of convicted Weather Underground members, Susan Rosenberg and Linda Sue Evans, before leaving office in January 2001. Which is worse: pardoning a convicted terrorist or accepting a $ 200 campaign contribution from a former Weatherman who was never convicted? They served on board of The Woods Fund for Chicago an anti poverty group 10 years ago...When Ayers was an active member of the Weather Underground...Our President was in elementary school. Soooooo the President being pals with a terrorist thing is exactly what I said in my comments many moons ago...Rhetoric. " Jan 19, 11 7:19 PM

I agree with Mr. Cosby. My parents stressed the importance of education over anything else and they also stressed that everyone has to work to earn thier keep. There is a serious issue with entitlement, not just with minorities but with young America in general. Somewhere along the way some in the African American community lost thier way and as result we have certain among us who think something is owed to them. I ask myself all the time...how do we change that? How do you change the mind set of an entire generation. I see a lot of people on here pointing out flaws but no one coming up with any ideas about how to make changes. Perhaps we should spend less time pointing out the problems and more time figuring out solutions. " Jan 21, 11 10:23 AM

Rumors Of 7-Eleven In Amagansett Surface

I remember when 7-11 was located on North Main Street in Southampton, I used to ride my bike or walk there to get a slurpy during the summer. That was in the 70's. Then it moved to its present location. A smart move on their part. No more slurpys for me...at least until I got my drivers license...anyway. I dont think that a 7-11 will lead to an influx of day laborers, The construction boom on the east end led to the influx of day labor. Contractors hiring practices helped sustain it, Things are a little slow in the construction business these days, last time I was home I didnt see a whole lot of guys standing around waiting for work. I did notice that they've migrated away from 7-11 and tend to group up at Willow Street now. I will say this, day laborer does not always mean illeagal. " Feb 9, 11 12:01 PM

Ever heard the term "crawl before you walk". There is a language barrier when you first come here from another country. Its hard to get a job when you do not speak the language, but once that barrier is overcome, they usually move from the street corner...to say McDonalds, Burger King, Kmart, Walmart...and after a few years, they are the ones stopping off at the corner to pick up someone to work for them for a day or two. So agian...day laborer does not always mean illegal. " Feb 10, 11 11:24 AM

Wow...The 7-11 in Southampton did all that when it came to town? Actually since I always remember it being there, I don't know if it caused such an uproar when it started out on North Main Street. I know my dad used to get the Sunday paper there after church, and of course fond memories of Slurpies. I seriously doubt that the presence of a 7-11 is going to do much damage to local business. Not all change is bad. A 7-11 is not the precursor to a shopping mall. " Feb 10, 11 11:39 AM

Southampton School District Fires Groundskeeper

I wondered that too. So I inquired about it and was told that everything that takes place in a public school board meeting is public record. Now the press could have opted not to mention his name but then they wouldnt have had much of a story...not that this is really "news" but hey its winter...things are a little slow on the "news" front. Its a small town, everyone know each other so of course people are going to read the story to find out who the groundskeeper is. My question is...is this a newspaper or a local tabloid...sometimes I can't tell. " Mar 26, 11 11:11 PM

The question is what are the parents doing? They also hold some responsibility for making sure that their children are reading at grade level and not being shifted off to BOCES. Teachers can only do so much...parents have to play an ACTIVE role in their child’s education. If a kid was not reading at grade level I’m sure it came up way before they got to high school...the question is what did the parents do to help their child get up to speed? We really need to stop expect teachers to perform miracles." Mar 30, 11 10:32 PM

Rerouting Of Drop-Off Traffic At Southampton High School Raises Concerns Among Parents

wow..everyone is eligible to take the bus? When I was a kid we lived to close to all three schools so the bus was not an option. OMG we had to walk and guess what!?!?! There was no sidewalk on hampton road...but that didnt matter because we cut through the parking lot at the intermediate school and walked across the scoccer field to get to the high school. The only time I got a ride to school was when it rained. Even walked to school when there was ...WHAT snow on the ground...cut the apron strings and put those kids on the bus. Problem solved."
