Car Plunges Into Town Pond In East Hampton

I'm sorry for the poor man. Must have been frightening for him. How deep is the pond? The whole thing is pretty shallow I think, about three feet? Anyone know?" Jul 12, 11 7:55 PM

Town Board Will Hold Hearing Tuesday On New Energy Efficient Building Standards

What about houses larger than 3500 sq ft? Seems to me some of the behemoths that have been built must use up an enormous amount of energy. It's why East Hampton was threatened with brown outs a few years ago and a whole new power cable had to be brought out." Jul 22, 11 9:00 PM

Around Southampton Town Hall: Town Board Restricts Parking Near Rumba

Perhaps the people who live near it might have some legitimate concerns about traffic safety and noise issues caused by the restaurant. The Town can not and should not ignore complaints in favor of letting businesses do whatever they want. Popular restaurants come and go. Residents remain." Jul 27, 11 8:51 PM

State Troopers, SLA Raid Nello's After Post Article

I don't believe they couldn't find anything wrong. The place always has underage kids in it. Last Friday the cops went into Nello's after a noise complaint and a flock of what looked like 17 - 19 year olds, many of them quite tipsy by the looks of it, came out of the place and wandered the surrounding streets as they called friends and cabs for rides on their cellphones. Some of the younger girls were wobbling badly and stumbled as they went. One even fell. " Aug 4, 11 11:51 PM

Democrats Will Cross-Endorse Two Republicans For Trustees

Yawn. Not very interesting. How is this different from being cross endorsed by the Conservatives, Independents or the Working Families? Now, if it was the Marijuana Party doing the endorsing ... I always toss them a vote." Aug 5, 11 11:32 AM

East End Verizon Workers Join In Regional Strike

Yes, but just FIVE of Verizon's top executives got paid $258 million - five guys! It's far beyond their worth by any stretch of the imagination. Pension issue aside, should middle class people have to give up a $6000 chunk of their hard earned income to pay for health insurance while a set of five fat cats walk away with an average of $50 million each? Something is very wrong in Verizon's board room." Aug 9, 11 12:42 PM

State Will Refund Fishing License Fees

The Dongan Patent was written to assure the rights of every freeholder, not just fishermen. It gives access to our ponds, bays, beaches and natural resources so that everyone would have equal opportunity to go clamming, fishing, seaweed gathering, hawking - whatever they wanted or needed to do. It was never just for people who made their living fishing and shellfishing. " Aug 9, 11 1:06 PM

East End Verizon Workers Join In Regional Strike

Until the top five Verizon executives' pay is scaled way back from an average of $50 million each - and I have to wonder how generously the execs directly below them are paid too - the striking workers have my sympathy. I pass by there regularly and they have been fine. I give an occasional thumbs up, they smile and wave back. That man who got roughed must have said something really inflammatory." East Quogue Couple Fears That Twice-Convicted DWI Driver Won't Face Jail Time

I thought that getting caught driving drunk three times meant mandatory jail time. Why is this woman being allowed to walk away just because she's getting counseling? Of course she getting counseling, but it doesn't prove she's stopped drinking and driving. I know someone who also got it after being caught twice, but she's drinking again. It's a matter of time before both get picked up again - God help us." Aug 10, 11 11:31 AM

Southampton Town Board May Ask Judge To Shut Down 'Hamptons House'

North Sea Citizen couldn't be more right. Those who feel Gilt City and similar events, group rentals and nightclubs ought to be allowed anywhere, zoning be damed, never had such nuisances near them. I flat out can not sell a house because of a notorious night club. People will not even look at it, in spite of multiple price reductions to well below market in the area. I may lose it to the bank." Hampton Bays Civic Association Laments Pollution In Bays

Reading this, I feel as if I must have been at another meeting entirely. So many things are the opposite of what I heard. The Health Department pointed out twice, according to my notes, that in their experience, contrary to the Baykeeper's opinion, the Nitrex system did NOT work reliably. They also said that home fertilizer runoff WAS indeed a significant factor. About 9% of what reached the bays came from runoff from the entire watershed area which can be long distances from the bays, half mile to a mile even, and is a factor that every one of us can help control by lessening our use of it. They also said that fertilizer should not be used at all within 200' of any shoreline.

Also, did the reporter not understand that a "leaching pool" is what all of us have out here already to treat our sewage? It's not something to be added on at extra expense to "lower the amount of nitrogen released". Everybody has them now. Jeesh...

A sewer system not only would raise taxes astronomically, but it would create enormous pressure from real estate interests to develop areas of fragile water front and wetland that have not been buildable before due to potential sewage leakage problems. Do we want that?

What Chris Gobler or Kevin McAllister never mention when they speak is the amount of phosphrous from both commercial and home fertilizers that gets into our waters from fertilizers. It may get diluted in the bays, but it stays in our lakes and ponds and creates big problems with algae growth. " Aug 19, 11 12:52 PM

The Clintons Are Visiting East Hampton Village

My appliance repair guy said he was working at a house that had been expecting Hillary a year or so ago. The excited owner kept boasting to him about it and was going nuts ordering in masses of flowers, food, etc. while chasing her staff around like a crazy woman - then, in the midst of it all, she got a call, Hillary changed her mind and wasn't coming." UPDATE: Storm Lessens In Intensity; Should Make Landfall At 10 a.m.

If you have a well, along with plenty of bottled water, be sure to have either a bathtub full of water or a line up of filled water buckets ready to help flush toilets when the power goes out as it might be out for days. "D" batteries have become scarce around here, but Home Depot in Riverhead said it was getting a delivery of them this morning, Thursday. Be sure you have a battery powered radio - with fresh batteries and that all cell phones are charged, vehicles are gassed up and you have enough necessities for several days. Sunday would not be the day to run out of diapers or dog food. Check on older people living alone to see if they need help buttoning down their places." Aug 25, 11 11:32 AM
