Obama's speech to students will be shown at EH Middle School after uproar

The difference in 1991 is that schools did not refuse to show the speech. You want to be a moral compass for your kids - go ahead, but don't interfere in the lives of others with - you said it, your bigoted, fearful, small-minded, ignorance. This school chose to listen to 12 parents!! GIve me a break. They were given the presidents speech ahead of time and they knew exactly what it was going to say. Forget the conspiracy crap from Glen Beck watchers like hamptons surfer. " Sep 9, 09 8:14 AM

Bush's tax cuts to the rich cost more than the proposed health care reform!

Enacted in 2001 and 2003, the Bush tax cuts are projected to cost about $2.1 trillion in lost revenue in the 10 years since they were first passed, according to Citizens for Tax Justice. About $979 billion of that would have come from the richest five percent of taxpayers.

By comparison, the health care plan advocated by House Democrats is projected to cost about $1 trillion through its first decade (2010-2019), according to estimates from the Congressional Budget Office." Sep 9, 09 8:18 AM

Mr. Hamptons, funny, but I was just thinking how you anti-health care radicals sound a lot like people from the South. Perhaps you'd be willing to go and leave us overwhelmingly blue state northerners to make some real positive change. By the way, it is "secede"" Sep 9, 09 5:37 PM

These are the criminals that the right wants to defend:

"Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota used premium payments to fund $15 million in employee bonuses, cover $35,000 for a retirement party and pay for other questionable expenses, according to a state audit released Tuesday"

Where were you anti-government, neocons when Bush was spending trillions on war and tax breaks for the rich? " Sep 9, 09 6:59 PM

razza, talk about bs - your neocon talking points are misguided and shown to have little to no effect on costs. Allowing competition across state lines means that you would have to deal with every states differing individual regulations and you think there is too much gov't involved now? How do you reduce the costs of care? The president gave a number of ways that even republicans agree with. Guess what, the president said there would be mandates.

I know it has been asked and unanswered so I will ask again - Do you work for the health insurance industry?" Sep 10, 09 9:07 AM

jekgbs, Not only will insurance companies NOT go out of business, every single study of the public option, including the non-partisan Senate Budget Committee, shows that the Obama health care plan WITH a public option AND a mandate will actually be a boon to private insurers, giving them the opportunity to add tens of millions of people to their plans.

The public option addresses the sky rocketing cost of premiums by introducing competition into the market place. If you think Blue Cross is working hard to lower your premiums you have either been brainwashed or you work for Blue Cross.

Blue Cross exists to make a profit - as large a profit as possible. Period. It is amazing to me how many people distrust the government yet stand up for massive corporations who are driven by profits. Absolutely amazing. " Sep 11, 09 9:55 AM

No, razaa, I do not believe in unregulated markets. If you followed the walls street and bank debacles you would know that unregulated, free market capitalism has driven this country to the brink. Tort reform has been proven by countless case studies where it has been implemented, to reduce costs by no more than 2 to 3%. I do not hold to your, "government bad, corporations good" philosophy.

razaa, your naivete re: the insurance companies is befuddling to say the least. You believe the gov't will destroy health care, but you don't believe the insurance companies collude to keep prices high? They are for profit. They exist not to keep you healthy, but to make a profit. Period. Besides, the president has given plenty of ground to the republicans, including on tort reform. You have not been listening.

If you like your health insurance keep it. I dont' want to take away your right to pay through the nose and stuff the pockets of insurance CEO's so why do you want to take away my right to choice? How many times does it have to be said. Oh, that's right, the government lies but for profit insurance is only out to do what is best for the patient. As someone who has to get my insurance on my own, not from work, I AM NOT HAPPY with private insurance and I want an option" Sep 11, 09 1:34 PM

Mr. Blumenthal, can you think outside of the Republican talking point memos? Do you realize how many people in New York make too much to qualify for Healthy New York and too little to purchase private insurance?

The New York state department of health says there are still 2.5 million New Yorkers under 65 years of age without coverage and the State spends over $1 billion annually covering the hospital costs of uninsured individuals. Guess what? THAT is government run health insurance and private insurers charge us an average of $1,100.00 per year above and beyond our premiums to cover these costs.

I have had a look at your website and you are still espousing policies from the Bush administration. Are you kidding?

Should you run? Yes, if for no other reason than to allow us sane folks the pleasure of seeing you defeated. " Sep 14, 09 8:01 PM

Oh, and before you whackos start screaming about all the emergency room patients being "illegal", get this: immigrants — particularly those here illegally — are often blamed for overcrowding hospital emergency rooms and driving up the cost of health care for citizens.

But a new report from the Public Policy Institute of California says that foreign-born residents who are not U.S. citizens are among the least likely to use emergency rooms.

More specifically, immigrant Hispanics and Asians use emergency departments less than U.S.-born whites, the report found. Noncitizen immigrants are among the least likely to report a recent emergency department visit, according to the study.

Facts. Not hyperbole. Not a line from Glenn Beck, but a fact from an extremely reputable source. " Sep 14, 09 8:04 PM

East Hampton residents rally for health care reform

Mo, many have tried using rational, factual data to dissuade anti-reformists from their path of ignorance, but it just does not work. Now that Baucus has delivered such a lousy bill that still has no republican support, now is the time to push progressives to go as far as they possibly can. Faceless, WOW! Such anger and hate. Do you really think you are helping your cause with such postings. I may not agree with many of the posters here, but your responses do nothing to move along the conversation. Perhaps you have a reasonable solution to the immigration problem? If so, then use that to make your point instead. Lashing out at immigrants and their supporters in such a childish manner only serves to help their cause." Sep 18, 09 9:02 AM

AlwaysLocal,I recall just a couple of years ago that one of the east end school board members had sent out a bunch of racist emails to hundreds of parents. I can't remember the details, but It was covered in this very newspaper.

Our country says that every kid deserves an education, regardless of parent's legal status. I think that is great. And remember, you have to live in a district in order for your children to attend which means you pay property taxes, either on your own or through rent paid to landlords." Sep 18, 09 10:56 AM

Darwin, what does that mean "our country"? Why are you and your family more entitled than anyone else to emigrate from their homeland to this country and call it yours? This is a country of immigrants, a great majority of whom, just like the current wave of immigrants, came here legally and then overstayed their visas.

Southamton183, your point regarding the US taking parts of the country from Mexico is an extremely important piece of factual history. Unfortunately, I fear it falls upon deaf ears here. " Sep 18, 09 4:50 PM

Report says anti-immigrant atmosphere in Suffolk County fuels violence

Darwin, You ignore the facts in favor of blanket statements. A large percentage of those here illegally have taxpayer id's and PAY taxes because they know they have to if they want to become citizens. They contribute to our economy because they must have a place to live, they must eat and they must travel from place to place. They try to learn to speak English - I know because I volunteer teach ESL classes. And thousands of children of "illegals" serve and die in our military every year.

If you have a problem with immigration laws, take it to the government, but to call immigrants an "invading force" is nothing more than right-wing nonsense and it denies the history of this country. " Sep 18, 09 6:04 PM

Hey, squeaky, you may not like it, but that is the America we live in. So instead of fighting against it with the same old, tired arguments and expecting the entire country to agree with you, adapt to it. This is no longer the America of the powerful white male. Women and minorities now have a place at the table and they've earned it.

In most other democratic, industrialized nation in the world people embrace multiple languages and we should do so here as well. Does that sign at the voting booth say you must speak Spanish? No. It is an option. Again, adapt to the new world and stop fighting against it - you'll be much happier." Sep 22, 09 8:22 AM

Ms. Q, It has been shown that learning a second language improves your first language grammar and usage. How many French and Russian speaking people live in the U.S.? Your argument is pointless." Sep 22, 09 9:22 AM

Your assumptions are wrong on so many levels. FACT: Most immigrants DO NOT use emergency services as they are afraid to do so. FACT: Immigrants pay taxes. A good percentage want to become citizens and have taxpayer ID's. FACT: Immigrants pay rent and the landlord uses that rent to pay taxes FACT: Immigrant fill entry level jobs that were once filled by teenagers and/or those without a high school education. They are NOT competing with the average American.

No one is breaking into your house and stealing your money. In fact, immigrants contribute MORE to the economy than they take so you should be thanking them for keeping food costs low. For taking jobs that would otherwise go unfilled causing those businesses that depend upon them to go under." Sep 22, 09 2:57 PM

You are equating speed limit laws with immigration? How do you know which immigrant is legal and/or illegal? Do you have special glasses?" Sep 23, 09 6:48 AM

Why do you blame the illegals? Because they're easy targets? People came here because of America's insatiable appetite for cheap labor. If you have a problem with immigration then call your congressman or fun for office, but don't attack those that were lured here by the promise of work. Being "Latin in origin" does not make you any less of a racist." Sep 23, 09 6:53 AM
