Storm Punctuated By Snow, Freezing Rain And Sleet Dumps More Than A Foot Of Snow On Long Island

I'm enjoying your stories. Speaking of time and change--- I used to ride my horse through the woods and fields out of Pheasant Run Stable. Each year there would be more and more paths blocked by new construction. The people who built alongside the pastures and trails then complained about the smells and flies. I stopped by the stable some years ago and it was overgrown. I thought about buying it for equine-assisted therapy programs (autism, etc) but the thought of being hounded by the lawyers of the neighbors put me off." Feb 8, 11 2:23 PM

East End Officials Look Toward A Windy Future

I guess there are no plans for these giant windmills off the coast of East Hampton.

The people of Kittitas County voted overwhelmingly against giant windmills.
But Gov. Gregoire disregarded this and invited a foreign company to build dozens of them in the once-beautiful rural valley. You can't escape the sight of them even at night because of the bright blinking lights.

Once the tax breaks and incentives expire, they will be rusting hulks like the ones in California.

Come the revolution, the locals have some plans. So I've heard." Mar 11, 11 1:52 AM

Shrinking Population Poses A Mystery In Montauk

Not an easy place to live. Terrible traffic in summer, parking tickets, tourist prices in all the stores until you get to Riverhead, expensive fuel, high property taxes, expensive houses, not a lot of affordable apartments. Long bus trip for students to go to high school and its sporting events.
Isolation and rough weather in winter-- only exceeded by Forks, Washington.

Great for those who don't worry about price and for those who enjoy seasonal solitude and brisk walks.

And, yes, some have fallen prey to the Hither Hellion- perhaps a cousin to the Jersey Devil of the pine barrens. The chupacabra is in Springs, Bill." Apr 19, 11 12:40 AM

Vampire Weekend, Bright Eyes Will Headline MTK Festival

Sounds like a great time. The cost of the ticket may seem high but the band line-up is wonderful and it is TWO days in the fresh air. It would cost you a hundred to go to the city in the heat of August to see just one band--- train or gas and parking, meals, drinks.
The local charities can really use the money. I volunteer with the Sunflower Children Foundation and donation amounts are way down because of the economy. " May 10, 11 4:17 AM

Windsurfer Rescued By Bay Constables In Peconic Bay Says Equipment Failed

Dollars are better spent on the occasional rescue of an active person who is challenging himself than on the expensive and extensive hospital bills for obesity-related conditions. Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, cancer, sleep apnea, joint problems....
