Southampton Town hires new auditing firm

Many people have the greatest respect for the town employees in the planning department. Anyone who attends planning meetings knows that those town planning staff are very dedicated and highly professional. The outside consultants are a waste of money, but that is a different group entirely." Jun 25, 09 6:08 AM

How to replace outdoor lights

Isn't there a new requirement that all outside lighting in Southampton has to be according to a new code? No light can legally go up or out to spoil a neighbor's views of the night sky. Did both the reporter and the salesperson from Schwing not know? Schwing, and a miss!" Nov 14, 09 2:20 PM

Stony Brook University will announce drastic cuts to Stony Brook Southampton

Our government officials, such as Anna Throne Holst, Thiele, LaValle, and Bishop should start work to create new laws to prevent the closure of Southampton College. They need to create a new charter for the Southampton college, based on a real undergraduate vision. To do otherwise would be to squander another opportunity to get it right. Stony Brook SUNY faculty have absolutely no interest in undergraduate education, which is why they dumped the college, rather than keep their commitments. The new president is a hired gun who is just doing what the faculty at SUNY told him, since the SUNY faculty very much resent the little college that they feel is just sucking their resources away from them. SUNY has no right to this campus now. Let your officials know it is up to them. They should not take this laying down." Apr 7, 10 7:46 AM

Officials want to use Southampton Town's Community Preservation Fund to save Stony Brook Southampton

The Shinnecocks should get a loan and buy the development rights before the town does, open a casino, (complete with a lounge, of course). Why commute to work when you can just cross the street? The gamblers can be brought in to the dock at the former Marine Station by high speed ferry from East Quoge, preventing local traffic issues. Future local employment for the people of the tribe will be a sure thing. They deserve it. Fair is fair. After all, wasn't it their community in the first place?" Apr 23, 10 10:00 AM

My comments were not sarcastic, I really think it is a great idea to convert the college into a casino. The traffic problem would be solved by the ferry idea. In addition, there is plenty of renovated housing that has just been provided courtesy of NY state, providing for a great hotel resort, with a few minor modifications. A resort needs a good lounge, and we could have music groups and comedians other acts there. The college cafeteria could be easily converted to a restauraunt. The Avrum theatre could be used fully to put on shows. The art gallery could sell local artist's works. Full local employment for the tribe, and maybe some others, too. The gamblers would come in droves, even in this economy. People are not willing to pay for a college based on green sustainability, nor a liberal arts school, so why not have them pay for restoration of the tribal wealth? " Apr 24, 10 7:54 AM

Shinnecock Nation explores opening tribal college at Stony Brook Southampton site

Stony Brook is setting up a task force to decide the fate of the campus- they'll use this method to defuse responsibility for selling the land to pay down their deficit. The Shinnecocks should get control of the campus; they are the first people who have a true historical bond with the land. Racist comments greatly inspire the tribe to fight harder to retrieve control of their ancestral ethnic lands. Racist comments highlight the dire need to have an ethnic studies center here." Nassau County To Support Shinnecock Casino At Belmont

People take a ferry and a bus to go to Foxwoods. It would be easier for gamblers to spend their money on the East End. All the members of the tribe live here. The casino jobs and other spending should be here, too. Why put a casino way out at Belmont? Why not keep the jobs on the East End? Is someone up island calling the shots, again? The benefits to the whole economy here will be worth putting the casino here. The college is shut down (again). Why not put the casino here, on traditionally native land?" May 11, 11 7:49 PM

University Signs Settlement, Ending Stony Brook Southampton Lawsuit

The university only has to issue an apology, hold a conference, and let the students graduate from the transplanted program? Oh, they did have to give the student's lawyers $30,000, so it all worked out. SUNY attorneys were paid with our tax dollars, as were the student's attorneys.

Tossed Cigarette Results In Partial Hospital Evacuation

Another sign will not work; there is a sign right there that says the hospital grounds are a no smoking area. People who smoke are addicted. Today there is evidence the tobacco companies actively hid their own studies that proved smoking was addictive. Indeed, they used the addictive properties to increase their profits, for decades, and they still do. People die in fires caused by smoking, as firefighters, and from cancer, all because of greed. anyone who owns tobacco stock should reconsider." Dec 1, 12 7:31 PM
