Good luck and welcome to the police force of Southampton Officer Knoebel. Your grandfather must be smiling up there and your family should be extremely proud. Federal Shutdown Hurts Shinnecocks, Threatens Brookhaven Lab

Just to confirm: You cannot keep your plan in New York if you have received a cancellation notice regardless of what you hear. There are statutes currently in place which will need to be amended by the NY State legislation and signed by the governor in order for any current NY State regulations to change. The carriers are in a wait-and-see mode until they know if New York State is going to allow carriers to keep offering your current plan or not. Anything is possible, but it is unlikely that NY State will follow the transitional fix that was proposed yesterday." Nov 15, 13 1:08 PM

Alec Baldwin Donates $1 Million To East Hampton Library

The EH Library should put GLAAD brochures in the Baldwin room. " Nov 16, 13 7:29 AM

That too. Right on schedule his spokespeople (in today's papers) are suggesting that Baldwin is too buy to address his latest incident of hurling homophobic slurs at someone who upsets him - something he's been doing for well over 20 years and not just to the photogs. "He is busy giving money to libraries..." " Nov 17, 13 7:03 AM

Shinnecock Tribe Considering All Options For Educating Students Next Year

Do they have to declare a particular school district? The reservation is in both Tuckahoe and Southampton District. It would seem that the families should have a choice where to send their children rather than be forced through an exclusivity agreement." Nov 27, 13 6:44 AM

State Education Commissioner Fields Questions On Common Core

The irony here is that Common Core is supposed to teach critical thinking and real world application - the very qualities that were lacking in the rushed implementation of this flawed program. I highly recommend a Huffington Post article today where Alan Singer investigates the privately funded apparatus known as the Regents Research Fellows - subject to zero public oversite - and how they go about designing public education policy in NY State. Corporate reformers have a vested interest in the notion that the public education system is finished. Diane Ravitch says it best when she says "we have to out education and out innovate other nations. Teaching to the test crushes creativity and innovation."" Dec 2, 13 6:54 PM

Community College Research Center at Columbia University’s Teachers College who conducted the study that resulted in the 60% figure you quoted also concluded in a different study that the majority of those were probably misplaced into those classes and could have done just fine...in fact the study shows in most cases these students would have achieved at least a grade of B or higher without the remedial class. The students pay tuition for the classes and get no credit. See how that works?

"A significant number of students entering community colleges around the country are at risk of being inaccurately placed in remedial classes, two new studies from the Community College Research Center (CCRC) at Teachers College, Columbia University, have found.

The studies, one of a large, urban community college system and one of a statewide system, looked at data from tens of thousands of entering students over several years and used statistical methods to simulate how students would have fared had they been placed directly into college level courses. The simulations indicate that a quarter to a third of students assigned to remedial classes based on standardized test scores could have passed college-level classes with a grade of B or better.

Most of the nation’s community colleges rely on two standardized tests—the COMPASS and the ACCUPLACER—to determine college readiness. CCRC’s research calls into question whether these tests should be used as the sole determinant of access to college-level courses. Because CCRC’s findings were similar in two very different community college systems—an urban and a statewide system—the results strongly suggest that the problem is a general one and that large numbers of community college students across the country may be able to do well in college-level courses without taking remedial courses first."" UPDATE:Oddone Released On Bail Monday

Let me see if I can understand how the legal system worked here. My classmate is dead and this Christmas, his family will have no dad/husband/brother/son. The guy that was found responsible for his death will be at home this Christmas. The judge that screwed the case is home at Christmas and the defense attorney gets to laugh at the microphone and suggest that this is all great timing. Does not seem right to me." New York State Plans To Cull Or Capture All Mute Swans By 2025

My how times have changed. When I was a kid injured swans were rescued and whenever dead swans were found, a search for the perpetrators would ensue. Now, those same people are looking to hire people to kill them. Now, the contract to cull the deer is netting some outfit $800,000. Is there good money in the systematic killing of swans too?" Jan 23, 14 10:03 AM

You know, I may stand as corrected. The outfit is the Department of Agriculture who is getting a large amount of taxpayer funds to kill swans and assorted fauna. I would not have imagined that the Department of Agriculture, the same people in charge of corn had a program to certify and train sharpshooters. But alas, they apparently do. According to its website the USDA "aims to meet the needs of farmers and ranchers, promote agricultural trade and production, work to assure food safety, protect natural resources, foster rural communities and end hunger in the United States and abroad." I'm not sure killing swans falls into that mission statement." Jan 23, 14 1:54 PM

If you don't know the different between a swam and a python, perhaps you want to change your name to something other than ''Nature''." Jan 24, 14 7:03 AM

Look, for now you are not allowed to kill swans no matter how badly you would love to shoot each and every one of them ..you know, because of the pond grass. That's all that matters.

" Jan 24, 14 12:29 PM

Yes. On this very website." Jan 25, 14 5:39 PM

This might blow your mind, but I eat cheeseburgers and eggs and still think anyone who wants to kill swans are idiots. I am finished with helping you people figure out your own position on this or humoring you into thinking you can change mine." Jan 26, 14 5:38 AM

I'm not exactly sure where you are going with the snarky and disrespectful comment regarding my church from the other day....but Hope Shields is in my church. The same church that I drove to yesterday morning right after I posted that comment at 5:38am, to feed a hot breakfast to guests of Maureen's Haven who are homeless Perhaps you can find something more positive to do with your time then logging 24 comments that don't amount to a single cognizant point. Well written editorial about this issue in yesterday's Press-Agree wholeheartedly with them on this. "A death sentence for beautiful animals that simply prefer to be left alone, and for no good reason, is indefensibly extreme". Precisely." Jan 31, 14 11:34 AM
