Why is it a conflict of interest for Chief Wilson to submit the cost estimates? If he provides accurate numbers based on commonly accepted methodologies-and he is surely equipped to do so-there should be no issues. I haven't seen anyone actually express what their specific concern is. If you are getting a quote done for any product or service don't you get it from the people that you are thinking about doing the work or hiring? This has been a very public and diligent process conducted by astute and honest people." Jul 24, 13 6:35 AM

UPDATE: Police Identify Woman Killed In Fatal CR39 Accident

CR 39 in SH is set up as though people are actually driving 35 mph. Thus, there are no dividers of any kind. At some point, there needs to be some sort of divider or bumps or something that will alert a distracted driver that they are heading into the oncoming lane of traffic. At 50 mph the cars, trucks and buses on the inside lane are threading a needle. For cars that are turning either from the outside lane or from the middle lane to cross traffic - they are putting their lives at risk just to get lunch or fill up with gas. It's actually a miracle this doesn't happen every week." Jul 26, 13 6:48 AM

There are 2 things that deserve a serious review in light of the last few summers. Three years ago wasn't just a ''bad summer for accidents''. It appears to be the beginning of a ''new normal'' out here insofar as fatalities on CR 39 in Tuckahoe are concerned. The Town of SH needs to review ways to increase the safety of the roadways and if necessary...protect them from themselves with whatever technology is available. Humans are driving, thus there will be accidents. Secondly the Town needs to review its protocol for keeping people and goods moving on the singular through way that connects us with the rest of civilization. Whatever the regulations are need to be amended to account for the unique geographic challenges we have here. It just takes someone with the right capacity willing to take ownership of the issues." Immigration: From Making Their Way To Finding A Path

It was the unions. You have retired workers receiving benefits for themselves and spouses at a rate of 3-1 over the people that are working and producing the funds to pay for these benefits and pension obligations. There are 48 different employee unions in municipality and there will be no way for consensus to be reaching in bankruptcy. The irony of this is that the leadership is trying to fend off bankruptcy because it will be very unforgiving to the unions. " Jul 29, 13 6:35 AM

UPDATE: Police Identify Woman Killed In Fatal CR39 Accident

That's not exactly an earth shattering revelation and nobody should argue that. However, there is no mechanism for fixing stupidity and there is no jurisdiction over individual bad judgement. But there are people charged with enforcing existing speed limits and departments in charge of the roads. These people need to review the existing situation to see if there are improvements that would help to decrease average speed and saves lives. if you are suggesting that the CR39 is perfect and that there is absolutely no room for improvement I think you are mistaken. One can change the road, one cannot change the people driving." Jul 29, 13 7:20 AM

What is unconscionable is how these brave men and women are being treated like pawns by politicians that are deliberately using the sequestor to inflict pain on private citizens for political gain. Bishop Touts Affordable Care Act In Sag Harbor

It's not exactly free market competition. If Oxford and Empire Blue Cross are offering plans inside of the NY Health Insurance Exchange and Oxford and Empire Blue Cross are the most popular plans (because they have the only meaningful regional physician networks) outside of the Exchange they will simply be gaining a larger share of the marketplace. Yes, individuals who are not working or not yet eligible for Medicare will see savings. Their rates will go down from $1600-$1800/month down to $700-$900 but the actual coverage terms associated with those prices have not yet been released. I'm not so sure that qualifies as ''Affordable"" Aug 1, 13 6:30 AM

In studying for a certification course on the NY Health Exchange, I just discovered why the individual rates in the exchange are 50% less than the ''off-exchange'' plans. They are being subsidized by the Federal Government by new income taxes for 2014 (Which, by the way, renders Mr. Bishop's comment about this being a free market innacurate). For one year - which is why the comment was made that ''Early'' pricing in the exchanges reflect exactly..." After that they must be self supporting to pay for expenses and claims. That means the rates will no longer be subsidized or artificially suppressed with your tax dollars. With health insurance and health insrurance rates, full disclosure is of utmost importance. The savings will last one year. The taxes will not end after one year. Regardless, one year of lower rates is a step in the right direction, but something has to be done to bring a long term solution to increasing healthcare costs which lead to rising healthcare insurance costs." Aug 1, 13 5:29 PM

That would certainly help a lot of things Mr. Z. Unfortunately, the small groups are no better. $$1,500-$1,700 for a family with a decent plan. It is a real shame that people won't find any values in the ACA after the first year. Most objective studies show that the only savings on the small group side would come from qualifying for the tax breaks (that's also renders the small group side void of what the politicians call ''fair market competition"). Not for the lack of trying but most companies are finding out that they don't qualify for the tax break. Perhaps in other parts of NY State where the cost of living is lower, but not around here." I do appreciate your helping me to understand the difference between a parasite and a parasitoid. Never knew that. " Aug 3, 13 10:48 AM

Many of the current plans do not meet the coverage requirements of ACA. Because coverage was increased, prices increased. In this manner, the ACA, which was enacted in 2010 and has been in effect since then did impact the rates of many people. If you have HealthyNY, the subsidized NY State plan, that is going away and your plan will be increased in scope and price to include pediatric vision and dental along with much more comprehensive preventative care for women." Aug 5, 13 3:00 PM

Not only did ACA ignore this problem but it exacerbated it. Effective January 1, 2013 the Affordable Care Act instituted a new 2.3% excise tax on medical devices that was hastily passed onto the consumer. " Aug 5, 13 4:22 PM

East End School Test Scores Drop, Reflecting Statewide Trend

Don't buy the bunk that is the Common Core National Assessment system.

Please recognize that many of the Common Core Standards in the earlier grades are not in keeping with what is known about early childhood development. The Common Core standards were developed “backwards” from the high school standards for Grade 12.

Realize that the Common Core expectations for reading are not aligned with conclusive and current literacy research. Forcing struggling readers to independently read texts that are more difficult than they can handle can have a detrimental effect on reading development.

Understand that your tax dollars are being diverted from enrichment to instead sustain a bloated regime of testing, test prep, unproven standards and a teacher evaluation system designed to feed into the testing frenzy.

This is not to minimize the challenges in the public school systems of this area, but the so called Common Core testing is not a valid indicator of anything.

Already Indiana, Alabama, Georgia, Utah and Oklahoma have removed themselves from the Common Core National Assessments and New York would be wise to do the same. Ohio has stripped all funding for Common Core Assessments from its State Budget and PA has signaled that the state's own Department of Education wants to take back control of it's educational system and terminate it's association with Common Core.

Write to your governor and legislature and tell them, “no more”. This is an unprecedented assault on local school control. " Aug 8, 13 4:45 PM

You don't know what you don't know. This includes the fact that I am on record as having immediately contacted the board and school administration to voice my negative opinion when I was surprised to read in the paper about the assurances. If you think taxes being reduced from over 7$ per $1000 to $2.60 per $1000 while trying to improve educational opportunities is ''selling out the taxpayers'' we couldn't possibly have a reasonable discussion. You may want to throttle back on the caffeine there." Aug 9, 13 8:05 AM

If you go to the Tuckahoe Common School District website. Under the heading that says "Quick Links" you will see a link for "TCSD / SHUFSD Reorganization Study" .

You will see a link to a report called "What If Financials". On page 11 of that you will see the new tax rates if the school districts were to merge. A $1,000,000 home in Tuckahoe is currently paying $7,500 in taxes. The new annual property tax rate would be $2600. In Southampton a $1,000,000 home is currently costing about $2,400 in property taxes, this would potentially increase by A$200.00. This is public information and has been for several months. As a ex-board member Obbservant, you haven't been too observant despite the fact that your husband and beach buddies ''like'' your comments. You and your apoplectic friends should have come to the meetings so that you don't feel so threatened and frightened. Defense Department Cancels Six Furlough Days For 106th Rescue Wing Employees

It's not right that these brave men and women are used like political pawns by transparent politicos looking to score points. The sequester cuts were purposely applied to innocent victims like the 106th for the sole purpose of the type of deceptive press releases we have above. The fact that their money was being cut in the first place is unbelievable.Seeing those that are responsible for the cuts get credit for giving it back is laughable. " Aug 13, 13 1:25 PM

You are indeed correct. The level of graft, bribery, extortion, criminal activity and unethical behavior being committed on a daily basis by our elected officials must surely be mind boggling to even the most seasoned observer. There is no question that low impact politicians conduct their career transacting these types of simple "a little contribution here, a little phone call there and voila' somehow a permit that was denied by a civilian doing his/her job is suddenly overturned''. Hey PBR I watched the salient portion of the video too. It didn't change my opinion but it did put a human face on it as opposed to all of our pontificating here. I feel sorry for the female home owner but she is a victim of East Hampton Town and of an ineffective Code Enforcement Dept , NOT a victim of her neighbors. Giving ineffective ''enforcers'' more rules to ''enforce'' doesn't seem like a logical solution to me. Why add another overreaching regulation to the volume of them already collecting dust. The answer is to replace the civil servants who are appear impotent, incapable or simply unwilling to enforce laws that are currently on the books. This is a private dispute between a woman and her overly athletic neighbors and should be treated as thus. IMO
