Court Bans Sale Of Tax-Free Cigarettes By Tribes

Ok Squeaky (160) two of my great grandparents came over from Ireland in the 1860's. one was a tailor working for the rich Lords.
I never claimed you, or anyone else, is responsible for what someone in the past did. I don't know where you are coming from. I happen to be interested in history. The libraries in the Hamptons are wonderful in the information they have on the shelves and the help available from the staff is phenomenal. You are not responsible for what any of your ancestors did... neither are you gaining any glory if you find out that you're related to King Charlamange!
Do any of you out there think I should not comment on what I have learned by delving into the history? Should I not say that a couple of my ancetors came over on the boat? A couple of them might have hatched from Machiavelli! I wish one of them gave me some Indian blood so I could live there on that beautiful pennisula. " May 12, 11 9:03 PM

I am not responsible for what some folks did in the past. Maybe I am resopnsible for what some kids said in 1948 in school, but the other stuff, not my fault, nor is it yours. since we do know about it we should look to correct the situation as we see it around us. Kinda hard to correct some of the stuff the elected officials are doing now. Nobody in this highly Republican area where I currently live will listen to me!" May 12, 11 9:10 PM

Head Start May Face Federal Budget Cuts Next Year

All of y'all out there need to wake up and see exactly just where this country is in the education field. What we have heard from the self serving oil men and those that support them, is unreal to me. generally speaking I'd say most of you have a GOOD eduction. Perhaps your children also. IF you do not fight for education for the generations now in kindergarten and the following grades then YOU are selling this country down the tubes. I am shocked at the level of intelligence south of the Mason/Dixon line. I am so lsick at the turn the WSJ is taking under the new ownership. On the other hand his mantra is "keep 'em DUMB so I can rule."" May 12, 11 9:25 PM

Court Bans Sale Of Tax-Free Cigarettes By Tribes

razza5351 I know that was a typo error the date of the year was 1865 and your history is correct. But to get back to the question, who owes, or pays taxes on the cigaretts? I do not propose that I am any law expert but when the Indians started selling cigarettes there on Montauk Highway I was disappointed. Mainly because I believe cigarettes and all such stuff is bad for the physical body. So when the taxes were raised to "help pay for health programs" I thought it was a good idea. Voters Take To The Polls On Tuesday, All Budgets In Southampton Town Approved

In reporting the Southampton vote why did you report the man's vote total first when the woman got the same amount of votes?" May 18, 11 7:47 AM

Stella Maris School To Close At End Of Year

Where has America gone so wrong? actions regarding bullying have been around since the dawn of time. Children HAVE to learn how to to deal with all kinds of people. Best to start learning early. Of course, hateful and harmful actions must be dealt with by the adults in the school system. As far as I know this is a problem to be dealt with across the whole spectrem, public school or private school, faith based or not.
It is a shame when a school has to close for what ever reason. Past history shows the people that public schools are the way to build a strong America. 150+ years ago some dedicated individuals saw that the whole variety of the public children should be educated and so began public schools. Naturally there are problems, as there are problems in any type of school, so don't bother to point out that obvious fact. " May 18, 11 9:42 AM

Where IS your sense of humor? I do not mean to Always be so serious!" May 18, 11 9:44 AM

So what else is new? since the railroad came to the village and the RICH people came to enjoy the fresh air it was always thus. It makes no difference whether the parent sends their child to public school or a private school ( parochial or whatever) it is what it is, as the kids today say. And, Maxwell, it isn't always easy as you seem to think. You own property, you pay taxes. " May 18, 11 12:57 PM

With Stella Maris Closed OLH Struggles To Find Room

Sister Kathy is truely a remarkable administraror and a wonderful, caring Sister. I know she will be unhappy to turn anyone away but she will think of the school's responsilbilty to those already enrolled. Yes, we might feel better lwith the children in a Catholic school. As for the younger children, just starting out, they really will not know the difference. They WILL pick up on our attitude and that will definitely affect them. So, If this year they cannot go to Stella Maris or Our Lady of the Hamptons the little ones will survive IF we put a good face on it. Our attitude is going to be so limportant to them as they start in what ever school we can find for them to attend. " May 19, 11 5:58 PM

Southampton Town Board To Consider Most Expensive CPF Purchase In History

windale indicates if the property is developed they "will need services such as schools" ????? are you kidding? I don't notice too many of the MCMansion owners sending their children to school out here." May 25, 11 12:18 PM

where was the successful business located? what was the product? Exactly who benifited from said business? My family wants to know before they vote.
Please don't be mislead by my address .. there are 10 voters living in Southampton. they are kind of busy (thankgoodness) so I tell them the news from the Press." May 26, 11 1:01 PM

speaking of the tide turning... I haven't seen this on the national news but another big upset for the GOP happened in Jacksonville Fl. this month. For the very first time that city voted in a Black man for Mayor and he is a Democrat to boot. It has been about 50 years since a Dem. has been a victor in Jacksonville politics.
Ofcourse, I know y'all are aware of the big upset in Buffalo." May 26, 11 3:45 PM

Election 2000 was my first in Florida. We stayed up till the bitter end that night. The sight down in Miami-Dade County at the election hall where the recounting was done was appalling. Totalling bought and paid for. GWB was Selected President of our country. Up until then I believed in the system and truely thought the Republicans had more honor and integrity than that. Jeb Bush and his family prooved me wrong. " May 28, 11 9:12 AM

touching on these comments I'd like add some facts that you young folks haven't experienced yet. Medicare works! And most of you better hope it is there for you when you reach 65. A retired teacher from Commack whishes he had waited till he was 65 for his elective surgery. His insurance did not cover everything and by reason of his Ins. rules the only rehab he could use was less than stellar. Whereas my husband with the same surgery under Medicare and the supplemental he chose had a completely successful outcome. He is free to chose ... Dr. Hosp., and Rehab.
Of course, there needs to be corrections. I am amazed that the man now Gov. of Fla. got the job. Ofcourse, the real truth of his company's Medicare Fraud was artfully hidden from the general public here. I mean the idiots who watch Fox News etc. " May 30, 11 3:31 PM

Realityfirst... Do you really watch only Fox News and Fox Programs? Amazing that you are able to put out a coherent thought!" May 31, 11 1:03 PM

I imagine that when one moves out of NY state the rules change for the recipient of the NYSHIP. I do not know those facts. I only know what was told me by the neighbor who received his surgery here in Fla. Yes, we do pay approx. those $$ for our insurance as you described.
The folks who worked in a position where they knew the benefits are fortuante/smart which ever. And there are those who for whatever reason do rely on Medicare/Medicaid.
Now if those programs had never been instituted to begin with: would the medical expenses be so high as they are now? Would Doctors receive the renumeration they now receive? Would they even have so many patients?
My belief is that the AMA was thrilled to watch Congress add Medicare and Medicaid to the law of the land!" May 31, 11 1:15 PM

I supose if I really didn't care I might like Fox prorams also. I mean they sure are exciting... all that fast talk, loud voices, screaming what ever, insults to the interviewee, etc. The lies told by Rush Limbaugh and the fact that he got away with proven Rx addiction certainly turned me off. 20 or so years ago I used to like RL. As for those stats you like to post, as my Father used to tell me "Just because everyone else in your group is jumping off the Brooklyn Bridge are you going to jump off it too?" "Think about what you are doing first." Too much of that follow the crowd mentality and Mr.Arlies, Head of Fox, is just so happy. He doesn't care what the guys and gals at the mike say true or not he only cares about ratings. Well, that makes him a successful business owner.
" May 31, 11 3:33 PM

I've read through all the posts. I only add this for your edification. There is a community of people here in Florida that I visit frequently. IF the residents want to do so, they read, listen to and watch media that is heavily slanted and in some cases interesting information is witheld. I am not making this up. Obviously, IF they choose to read other papers, watch other TV programs they are available to them. But, being retired and looking for relaxation many do not bother. So the information they use when they go to the polls is totally right wing and Tea Party from Fox News and Prorams.
It does concern me to know that here in America disidents holding a different opinion are refused admission to what was billed as a public event, a state budget signed by the Gov. of Florida. Democrats were told to leave by a uniformed sherrifs deputy. Shades of Nazism." Jun 1, 11 11:03 AM

I get a laugh out of the remarks by the newcommers to the Hamptons. You would do well to go to the Library to research the history. Then you will have a bit of knowledge on just how "The Hamptons" happened. When you do know exactly how it happened in the 1870's THEN maybe you can decide and expound on just what should have been done to avoid what is now.
As it is now, my great grandpa did what came naturally, when he had a piece of land he could afford to sell, some rich guy got off the train and offered a fantastic sum for it; thinking it over he took the money. He still had land enough to farm as the generations before him had done." Jun 4, 11 11:26 AM

Paying taxes is something EVERYONE does every time we go to the cash register. Or have some of you forgotten that FACT?
I am sorry for the poor fools who refuse to listen to facts: this country was taken to a WAR UNFUNDED, and then refuses to credit the President who ordered a boots on the ground op that was successful in carrying out the promise "Get 'EM dead or Alive". " Jun 5, 11 2:28 PM

Saturday Night Fire Closes Southfork Kitchen

I wonder.... looking at the map I wonder if that is the spot I used to frequent back in the day called "Julie's". If so I can tell you we 'local' kids had a pile of fun there. And they I heard from my mother in her day it was a speakeasy.
I hope they repair it. It's bad to llet a good spot like that go to waste." Jun 5, 11 2:45 PM

I fail to see your logic, philathome. What did I print that infers I think equality is a bad thing? I am going to sleep. I'll check in tomorrow to see if there is an intelligent response. just for anyone's information, growing up in SH certainly taught me there is no equality. " Jun 5, 11 8:24 PM

It has been said 'that one doesn't know anything until one has moved around in this world'. Let's get back to 1st District and Randy and Tim regarding who has the interests of Eastern LI in his mind and heart.
From reading the recent posts, and using my experience from various moves, I believe it is in the best interests to the residents, full time and seasonal to elect Tim Bishop. Randy Altshular has proven that his heart is in HIS own best interests. Now, I have no quibble with people like that. But, his kind do not make good leaders for the majority of folks one is looking to represent, whether it is National, State, or local politics including ones' affiiliated clubs or religious organization. If you want to join polictics and help the common good then you need to go beyond yourself.
Sorrowfully for me, it has been my experience that the Republicans do not care about anything but themselves. In fact one big time Republican in Suffolk County told me "I'm getting out of this business and going into politics. That's where the money is!" The difference is Tim is a Democrat. So was FDR." I wonder how old you are, Cap'n? If you are not 55 yet you had better start a saving acct. for your medical needs. You havae no idea what it is like to be 70+ and really not ready to die. To paraphrase Dr. Suess "Oh the choices you'll make!"" Jun 6, 11 4:41 PM

Shellfish Ban In Shinnecock Bay Lifted After Toxic Bloom Subsides

Oh I hope y'all do get that bay ALL cleaned up and I hope the clams have enough time to clean themselves out because that is what I live for.... some fresh clams from Shinnecock.
