Southampton Town Leaf Pickup Program May Strain Waste Management Department

Maybe part of problem goes back to right after Gregor's election when the Town Board broke up his department into Highway (Gregor) and Waste Management. They hired some new person to run that at a lot of $$$. Now Highway Dept has to pay Waste Management to dump our leaves there. I never understood why this was done and always thought it seemed illegal since we elected Gregor for both jobs and then they just took one away. I think it has made life for Gregor more difficult. And we are paying the price. Does anyone out there understand the full dtory?" Oct 25, 11 4:56 PM

Brad Bender Concedes Southampton Town Board Race To Christine Scalera

Brad Bender was the hardest working candidate I have ever seen. Just the kind of work ethic we need in Town Hall. Hope he runs again!!! Maybe the next time the voters will realize his potential." Nov 22, 11 11:42 PM

Elected Officials Address Concerns Over Hampton Bays Homeless Shelter

Homelessness is such a difficult issue and I'd like to share some of my thoughts:
1. This motel is currently home to local town people who are virtually homeless themselves. Before this conversion, they were living in very modest circumstances. After they will be homeless. ...made homeless by people who are mostly from western suffolk. From how far afield should one community support them? At what expense to local residents?
2. Homelessness is usually a product of much more than economics. Very often there is a pathology here i.e. serious mental illness, drugs, alcohol or some anti-social behaviors. This is what causes problems and why people who are homeless often are unwanted in communities. Instead of getting the adequate help they need, they are generally dumped into the community which now has to deal with the attendant problems.
3. There should be very small catchment areas. That is if someone is homeless, they can only be housed in emergency housing withing a small number of miles. This would prevent some communities from becoming large receiving grounds while other areas escape entirely.
4. Hampton Bays is the kind of community which has more affordable housing than most, more social service residences than most etc. HB should not be allowed by anyone of good conscience to become overwhelmed by populations in need and which might further strain the community's stability.
What is fair is fair. " Nov 23, 11 4:01 PM

Diana Weir Appointed To East Hampton Town Planning Board

Ms. Weir's bias also seems to be affordable housimg. Whether that's good or bad is something else. But I think people on the planning board should not be spokespersons for a particular point of view as hers has been in the past. Can she be open? Or will she prejudge?

Southampton ZBA Rejects Front Yard Pool Plan In Bridgehampton

Homeowner should move to Hampton Bays. The ZBA would let her put the pool an inch from the street there. They'd probably even let it spill over into someone else's yard(no pun intended).
" Dec 17, 11 1:46 PM

I was trying to be sardonic. Sorry hjr that you didn't understand. What I meant was that the ZBA says ok to practically everything in Hampton Bays no matter how outrageous the request. I am saying that, if this application for a pool were in Hampton Bays, the ZBA probably would have allowed it. They give outrageous variances there; never refer to what the Master Plan recommends for Hampton Bays. " Dec 17, 11 3:25 PM

Pope Names Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Roman Catholic Church A Basilica

It IS a beautiful church and quite an honor to be named a basilica especially since there are only 70 in the entire U.S. I love looking at the wood above the pews and spotting the green shamrocks put there by the Irish immigrants who were responsible for the church being built. For those who don't know the story, apparently the wealthy summer people petitioned the bishop to allow the church to be built because they were having trouble getting their Irish servants to come out for the summer since there was no local Catholic church to attend. And supposedly the Irish servants paid for it to be built and, obviously, they did not stint.
I suspect our newest wave of Catholic immigrants, our hispanic neighbors, will leave behind a very special legacy of their own. Probably not a building but something that will enrich us all.
The diversity will help keep the Catholic Church vibrant and open to new traditions, I hope.

Southampton Town Board Republican-Conservative Majority Holds Off On Key Appointments

Part of me cannot believe this outrageous behavior. Yet, the other side does. What can we expect from an opportunistic carpetbagger who moved here just for this. She will do what she is told to do if she wants to go places.
Does the GOP have no shame out here to reward Tamara Wright this way after all she did? Maybe thay can find another GOP-operative who needs a job like Kratoville did. Who gives a rap if the Town is pporly served as long as the "boys and girls" get their party loyalty rewards.
I hope I am wrong and Scalerea is telling the truth that she just wants to review things. But I will not hold my breath." Jan 3, 12 6:08 PM

Scalera only moved here recently after a career in several Towns west of here. Her husband, as I understand, is still a GOP Committeeperson in Nassau. They were hedging their bets. If she lost, I bet she would have moved on to another Town on LI for another opportunity. This place of ours is nothing more than a career move for her as far as I can see." Jan 3, 12 11:11 PM

Helicopters Try Out Proposed South Shore Route

Now they will be flying over Hampton Bays? If they are flying "over the Ponquogue Bridge", that means they are flying over land until they almost reach the bridge. The most densely populated hamlet on the ast end. Oy." Feb 3, 12 7:18 PM

Southampton Town Board Divided Over Comptroller Appointment

I can't believe it. The majority wants to hire a guy who apparently failed in Smithtown in their budget process? Is this worse than the Kratoville fiasco?
What are we the final resting place for failed GOP operatives?" Mar 8, 12 5:39 PM

UPDATE: Monsignor Trench of Sacred Hearts Remembered As People Person

A credit to the Catholic Church. A credit to Southampton, A wonderful man. We were truly blessed by his presence in our lives.

Forces Tried To Oust Southampton Town Police Chief

I have no inside knowledge but my take on the Tamara incident was that the GOP was sending a message. Yes, in the end they voted to keep her because they knew how invaluable she really was. But they were saying behave or else. Your future is in our hands not the supervisor's. I think Tamara blindsided them by showing she was not going to spend the next few years kissing their you-know-what. And so the town is now paying the price for the bulying tactics of the GOP." Westhampton Beach Superintendent's Proposed Budget Pierces Tax Cap

Immigration Outreach Group Celebrates 10th Anniversary In Hampton Bays

This is so sad. Sad. We are talking about people here. Our neighbors. First, the assumption seems to be that immigrant = illegal. WRONG. Second, that immigrants are takers and not givers is also wrong. I have been blessed knowing many of these newcomers. For the most part, they are kind , generous, loving, family-oriented people who work hard. True we cannot open our doors to the world. We should also take into consideration that those who are illegal broke civil laws not criminal laws. Big difference. In any event we should be respectful to immigrants who are our neighbors. And to those Christians among us, remember Christ was an immigrant when his family fled to Egypt. Most of us come from immigrants. We were just lucky there were hardly any immigration restrictions back then or our ancestors might have starved to death or been executed for their beliefs or for whatever reason they came here. Let's try to have some compassion. There but for the Grace of God go I." May 25, 12 1:33 PM

Pre-Dawn Raids In Hampton Bays Prompt Complaints

How many people REALLY leave for work between 5 and 6AM. And how many children leave then for school?
If the motel has occupancy for 40 and they found 80, they could come at 7 AM and still probably get 70-75 people there. More than enough to make their case.
Who are they kidding. I think it s harrassment, pure and simple." Jun 9, 12 4:31 PM

Police Say 30-Year-Old Hispanic Man Is Being Sought In Fatal Hit-And-Run; Name Still Not Released

No one to the best of my knowledge ever uses the title "Sister" with the last name only. It should be "Sister Jackie" or "Sister Jackie Walsh." Never "Sister Walsh."
I noticed the SHP did this before when running story of Centro Corazon etc.
Just not done that way colloquially, anyway. Not in this country." Jul 14, 12 3:48 PM

Plaque Now Marks Site Of Shinnecock Lighthouse

I think the Brothers Casabianca looked fine for the occasion. Actually, they are good looking no matter what the occasion.
And, while on the subject, thanks to Richard Casabianca for all the hard work and persistence it took to get HB the marker. It is great having someone in our hamlet who really appreciates our history and fights to get it some recognition." Jul 15, 12 2:16 PM
