Supervisor Kabot will fight DWI charge, stay in race

Now what, does one suppose, was wrong with my last post? Why was it taken down in a matter of minutes? I wonder if anybody even had the chance to read it. That's okay, I'll post it again-- for it had no foul language, no personal attacks, and the subject was something that people have been commenting on. So here it is again. (I'll save this one, so that if it gets taken down again I can re-post it a little faster next time.)

Mr. Shaw,
With all due respect you are offering NO transparency. While you are acknowledging that you were "too cautious in originally not allowing comments on this story" I think you should let your readers know exactly what factors in this case led to your hesitation on the matter. What were the factors that existed in this case but did not exist in all of the other cases previously refferred to? Just allow me one valid reason and I'll let the matter go.

President addresses nation and Congress as health care debate continues on East End

Please people. Can we stop quoting polls from obscure sources. For every poll and study under the sun, there are three polls or studies that claim to prove the complete opposite. I laugh at you guys citing these useless sources and acting as if they are the final say in the subject.

Secondly, yearrounder, have you been to Southampton Hospital lately? I was there about six months ago (visiting a family member) and as I walked through the waiting room for the ER I remember thinking to myself that I was the only one there who spoke english. And the waiting room was packed, standing room only. What world do you live in?" Sep 14, 09 10:30 PM

Surfer did u just call ME a liar?" Sep 15, 09 4:08 PM

Southampton Hospital opens new wellness institute this week

That donation could've paid for health insurance for a number of poor east end residents. Instead its making the rich ones more comfortable by turning their hospital into a day spa. What a horribly unneccessary expense. Don't worry, those without insurance will just be paid for by a raise in income taxes for the rest of us." Sep 15, 09 5:59 PM

Arrest tape could be used in Kabot DWI case

Kudos to the Press for filing two Freedom of Information Act requests, in an attempt to get a copy of the video. I wonder if, when the video is obtained, it will be available for your readers to view on this website? That would get you guys some record hits." Sep 15, 09 8:44 PM

I can make an arguement, MaryB, for the need of alternative medicine in this country. In alot of cases it is a neccessity. And I don't mean to take anything away from the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Davis. They are wonderful people for offering their assistance to help realize a better medical experience on the east end. I do feel, however, that the money could have been better spent--such as to help alot more people who are in alot worse financial shape than the patrons that will frequent this wellness center. Just my opinion.

P.S. - You're not kidding, I definitely DO need a massage." Sep 15, 09 11:42 PM

Well, surfer, apparently your life IS my problem. My taxes pay for expenditures for you and every other citizen in our community, as do we all. My taxes have paid for any number of rennovations and/or equipment that the hospital has needed. And yes, my taxes have gone to medicare and medicaid which IS the government's alternative to health insurance. Again, just my opinion, but if our tax money is so desperately needed to pay for these things, than wouldn't a large donation like this be better put to use to not only further the hospitals efficiency, but also ease the financial burden on the rest of us?" Arrest tape could be used in Kabot DWI case

pch50, do you know anyone who has ever gotten a DWI or a DWAI? If this is her first offense (and I would imagine that it is) she will not even come close to doing jail time. This will be classified in court as "an isolated incident" and a "rare lapse in judgement," a plea bargain will be reached and her most significant punishment will be losing her license for a year, on top of some fines. Even if no plea deal is reached, and she pleads guilty to the charges, there is no way to establish how much she had too drink--so the charge of a felony DWI is not in play. The worst outcome for her in that scenario Where she simply pleads guilty) would be, for a first time offender with no criminal record--very similar, perhaps with points on her license or probation for a year (which would be an extremely heavy sentence). Either way it will be a slap on the wrist, and the public scrutiny will be the only real damage incurred." Sep 16, 09 7:25 PM

Mr Shaw,
I appreciate your updates on this case, and I stand with you on your attempts for the videos. One question though-- Would you, in fact, contemplate posting the video on this site, or are your requests for it simply to be able to commentate more accurately about it in your articles? Report says anti-immigrant atmosphere in Suffolk County fuels violence

To pstevens,
I agree, whole-heartedly with all of your points. and I would like to elaborate on your quote, "The problem comes when these same people paint all Latinos with the same brush." - which is true. But on a counter point, there is a large number of people, as well, who oppose illegal immigration who aren't bigots or racist. Many of them avoid a healthy discussion of the issue due to the worry that they will be painted with the same brush as the "Nazi poster-person and his psychiatric shortcomings" (to quote Ryder.) It is a slippery slope for one to speak their mind on either side of the arguement and not be accused of being something that they simply are not.

For the record, I don't mind anyone being in-or entering our country, regardless of their legal status, providing that they are subject to the same laws and regulations as myself." Sep 16, 09 9:05 PM

Southampton Hospital opens new wellness institute this week

lo-cal,
I'm sorry, but I have to pick on you for a moment here. Do you know what else can lower cost and reduce procedures. Did you ever see on tv or in the news those nut-jobs who believe in healing through prayer-and nothing more. That would reduce both costs and procedures--so would I "be supported" if I donated money to the hospital to be used for a temple (or some other place of worship) Or wouldn't that money, lo-cal, be better spent on neccessities rather than something that far outside of the mainstream medical community?" Report says anti-immigrant atmosphere in Suffolk County fuels violence

Hey Mr editor, why did you take off 5 of my bolgs? There was no foul language or personal attacks. I posted three very well thought out ideas, and they were all taken down. I then reposted one of them, and it too was taken down. I posted that same blog for a third time and said at the end of it "this is the third time I've posted this" and it was also taken down. Whats the deal with your censorship policy?" Sep 17, 09 1:37 PM

Thank you for your input Mr Shaw. I realize that most of my comments did, in fact, refer to another post from other parties that have also been removed.

On a different note, if the hospital is, in fact, having financial difficulties than It's probably not a good thing that they build an expensive "day spa" their for patrons. See the related article on this site.(" Southampton Hospital opens new wellness institute this week")" Sep 17, 09 2:33 PM

Tim Bishop pushes the House to pass college aid bill

This is one more step towards nationalizing the banks, in the guise of helping low income students pay for college. I'm not saying that tuition assistance is a bad thing in some cases, but not when considering the end result to which this will lead." Sep 17, 09 9:03 PM

"I tried to educate...about immigrants and also a Board of Education, but they are not willing to learn. You can not change the minds of people who hate immigrants" WOW!! That is a bold accusation of racism. Which school has a school board like this, learnmore? I'll go after them myself. This is confusing to me, most of the schools on the east end bend over backwards to accomadate immigrants. Please, let me know which school this is. (because I think you're lying)" Sep 18, 09 10:39 AM

Also learnmore, I am a US citizen- born and raised. I work (landscaping) side-by-side with illegal immigrants all day. In fact, I consider them to be some of my closest friends. Out of the dozens of immigrants (legal or illegal) with which I need to converse each week, usually about half of them do not speak any english, nor do they understand it. Lucky for me, I (the American) speak spanish fluently. So much for your theory on that.
" Sep 18, 09 10:46 AM

I think that my stance on this issue has not been clear. Give them all amnesty. I'm fine with that. The main reason that they come to this country in such great numbers is because to seek a better life and future. Thats admirable. I don't care who is here legally or illegally, they all want to prosper--and thats wonderful. My problem, however, lies with the fact that an overwhelming majority of illegal (not legal) immigrants are not subject to the same income tax as a US citizen. Now, yes there are american citizens working "off the books" as well, and I think no matter what your country of origin this should not be tolerated. I give up a third of the money that I work for every year, of course I'm going to be angry if the guy doing the same job next to me doesn't have to. I think that this (my qualm) is much more of a tax issue than a immigration issue." Sep 18, 09 1:00 PM

He shouldn't have voted for the "stimulas package" that allowed it in the first place. (especially without reading it)" Sep 18, 09 1:33 PM

"It trully seems like the issue at hand was not a heated, national threat until minorities were the problem"-- Darwin

Are you kidding me? Every single group of immigrants in this country were discriminated against, and treated lke crap. Most of them never had advocacy groups trying to help them like todays immigrants, but they pulled themselves up by the bootstraps and overcame adversity anyway.
To say that there is tension because alot of immigrants today are classified in minority groups is repulsive. You are trying to bring racism into a subject that, for rational americans, contains none." Sep 18, 09 6:06 PM

Well spoken, Just.
I agree with you on almost all points except for one,
"These people should all be made legal, given ss#s and pay taxes, what else can you do with them" I agree with given citizenship to whoever is in this country, and ss#'s, and having them pay taxes. But, if this scenario happens, I don't think that nearly as many would stay in this country, do you? I mean, if they all of a sudden they had to pay a third of their income to uncle Sam (like us unfortunate natives) don't you think that this would deter them from coming here in the first place? It would be a great triumph to have that many more tax payers, but highly unlikely." Sep 23, 09 11:18 PM

Town says Riverside home was overcrowded and infested

This story looks alot different when the number of bedrooms changes from 11 to 3. Now it is certainly too many people in the house. Wouldn't you guys agree, littleplains, The End, and hamptons surfer?" Sep 28, 09 6:05 PM

Good call nicole, a three bedroom house it is. How could the Press mess up the facts on this house so badly. It seemed to me to be a non-story, until they corrected the facts. But, low and behold, it was an extremely overcrowded house--I wonder if the Press will attempt to ascertain the names of the tenants (in order to put the immigrant rumor to bed)" Sep 28, 09 6:16 PM

Residents outraged over proposed windmill plan

Something I heard along time ago--"An environmentalist in the hamptons is someone who bulldozes a three acre plot of woodland to build their dream house, and then fights tooth and nail with their neighbors for wanting to do the same thing, claiming that it is bad for the trees."" Attorney: Linda Kabot will be vindicated

There is no doubt in my mind that this note DOES exist. I think that the question shouldn't be its existence, but its origin. It is not outside of the realm of possibilities for a political figure (or her lawyer) to mail such a letter to themselves, in an attempt to distract the community from the legitimate facts of the case. If this letter exists, (and I'm sure it does) why wouldn't the lawyer bring a copy of it to the county police to investigate the officers involved. There is a simple answer to that-- whomever brings that letter to the police to investigate, will be committing the offense of filing a false police report, and be subject to even more scrutiny (albeit further on down the road). These two know what they are doing, but for the lawyer to say that HE is investigating it, and not the police, is absurd and drains the claim of any and all credibility.

P.S. this letter is not to be evidence in the DWI case, so Mr. Shaw, I hope that you will hound the lawyer for a copy of it." Sep 28, 09 10:19 PM

Town housing officials walk out of civics meeting in East Quogue

I like this idea. North of the Highway. I would love to see it discussed more. Unfortunately, many politically "privelaged" residents are absentee landlords (and some of them you might consider slumlords.) Plus, I haven't toiled this idea enough to come up with the downside of lowering the maximum monthly allowance to landlords, but I'm sure someone will point it out to us." Oct 2, 09 8:10 PM

Residents outraged over proposed windmill plan

I wonder how many of the residents up in arms over this chastise people for buying an SUV or some other gas guzzler. How many of them, do you think, slam big companies over harmful factory emissions. Which of them, if any, have done more than Mr. Sedido in trying to make THEIR properties less harmful to the earth? They are a bunch of two-faced whiners, who only support energy efficiency when it is convenient for them. "Energy efficiency is a grand idea, but don't let me be burdened with it."" Oddone trial nears second month of testimony

i don't believe that BOTH parties are capable of living their lives, jackass, due to the fact that your friend is an animal." Nov 17, 09 5:06 PM

Are you actively going out of your way to spit on the people who were close to andy? Why would you even post such garbage, are you really that venomous? Your friend killed ours, isn't that enough suffering for our community? Now we have to listen to you spew this arrogance about how he'll walk, and his life will be just peachy. Whether you think this or not, don't you think that maybe you should keep it to yourself?" Nov 17, 09 5:31 PM
