Westhampton Beach Superintendent's Proposed Budget Pierces Tax Cap

Administrative consolidation should be the first reform thats done, Superintendents
compensation on LI runs from $250k to over $500K (Syosset) add deputy and other administrative titles (business, etc) and the cost savings are real. Several states have county wide school districts (Maryland) with ONE super.

Code Enforcement Officer Among Six Netted In Drug Sting

This is really troubling- regardless of which party is responsible. How much did the town have to pony up for the forensic audit that was required to understand the financial transaction that covered up deficits? The main character went on her merry way without any consequences- and is trying to (or already has) secured business with Riverhead town. I've only really started to follow this stuff-but its really disturbing- and not just this town but all over Long Island- remember John Powell, don't misunderstand this was a tragedy for a young man to pass -but he used his office for price gain was a convoked felon and gets a County Sheriffs escort at his funeral? This stuff just goes on and on" Apr 28, 12 6:46 PM

Southampton Supervisor To Give State Of The Town Address This Thursday

Look at some of the budget components, the mortgage tax, basically the town collects a tax on a RE transfer for doing nothing, and makes it less afordable for middle income people to buy a home, also not the most reliable revenoe stream; have to deal with a 2% tax cap- thats a good thing to taxpayers; dont know where "fixed costs" will be, yes you do if you enfore the cap salaries which are the fiex cost can't rise above 2%- its the variable costs i.e fuel that you can't be 100% sure of." Thats right- and why are the costs that are paid by the taxpayers by the PD breaking the law never used in contract talks- why do we end up paying for their malfesiance? Southampton Town Board Suspends Second Police Officer; Police Union Stands Behind Cop

Does anyone believe anything the PBA says, so the use of drugs by the people who are sworn to arrest others for doing the same thing is categorized as an "oustanding officer". This from the same bunch that marched into town hall and berated the Supervisor- do you think the same BS would be tolerated by the state Police for example? I wonder" Jul 11, 12 2:56 PM

Because the PBA only cares about its own- regardless of what behavior their members engage in." Jul 13, 12 9:24 AM

Southampton Supervisor Unveils Budget: Spending Stable, Consolidations Continue

Exactly- its a deficit, you would think with both EH and SH towns budgets falsified only a few years ago that the Super would state the obvious- what is closer to reality is the town has a "structural" deficit, in that the mortgage tax receipts collected( for doing nothing) are doing well - the major driver of the deficit is the pension and health care costs- which appears to shock the super even though these costs have been growing exponentially for years. If any one doubts that the pension costs alone aren't significant- pick up a west coast paper at least five cities simply can't pay their pension costs. " Sep 30, 12 5:58 PM

They don't care- as a matter of fact the last superintendent was very proud of "her" achievement the expansion of the middle school- never mentioning the initial and operating costs that were incurred or mentioning why- she just beat it back upstate where she came from and doubled her pension with a stint downstate." Bridgehampton School Is Not Ruling Out Piercing 2-Percent Tax Levy Cap

The schools on LI are operated for the benefit of the employees then the students, look at the timing of school funding, first the board approves "contractually obligated" salaries and benefits (70% of the budget is now spent) and then whats left over is spent on the children- it should be the other way around. Forget the teachers for the moment, why do we need 126 odd administrative staffs for each district? This costs over a hundred million dollars- Maryland and Virginia have count wide administration and the schools perform very well. " Feb 3, 13 9:08 PM

UPDATE: Witnesses Say Verbal Altercation Led To Alleged Assault By Retired Southampton Village Sergeant

This is going tp play out just like the prior cases of misconduct, using drugs on duty, covering the same up, missing/ destroyed police documents, lying to DA deceives....You have to wonder though if the roles were reversed and it was an off-duty or retired cop that ended up in the ICU- I think the perp would have been charged with a felony-after he got out of ICU." Hampton Bays School Officials Facing Tough Road To Stay Under Tax Cap

The schools are run for the benefit for the people who work there- thats why all all the compensation contracts are done first then whats left over goes to instruction, and now these two masters didn't foresee costs that have been rising for over a decade. The costs have always just been passed along to the taxpayers- now finally their is some fiscal restraint-and the administrators have no solutions-thats because they are at the root of the problem. Administrative consolidation would save millions, its done in VA and MD and the schools perform very well -One SD admin and seven assistants per COUNTY- look at Fairfax County website and see for your selves- but this will never be suggested by the people who earn four or five times the per capata income of a family in the districts they purport to serve." These benefit costs increases are unsustainable- and not unpredictable- plenty of people have disputed the discount rate that is used to determine the contributions that participants have to make into the NYS (teachers)pension plan-health care, what plan does the district use? State employees use the Empire plan and contribute more into it. Finally why doesn't the Administration suggest that employees must contribute more for the benefits- Give the Reuters story" How a vicious circle of self interest sank a city- oh and lastly I have to commute into NYC to earn a living-not a lot of free time like Larry and Lars no doubt have. East Quogue Board Of Education Will Consider Piercing Tax Cap

The Cap is doing exactly what it was intended to do-curtail spending and the districts are doing all they can to exceed it; they act surprised by double digit increases in benefits because its getting harder to just pass the costs along to taxpayers. The solution to reduce spending will never come from within the districts-they have a vested interest in the status quo- Administrative consolidation by County should be done, but again this will never be put forth from the districts themselves."
