Southampton Town must issue $16 million in bonds this year

Had the projects been properly bonded at the time, the operating budget should have been reduced to reflect the $10 in excess funds used improperly for capital projects. Also, with the current financial crisis in the debt market, we'll pay more over the life of the 30 year bonds for higher interest. Thanks Heany and Kabot.
Who is Ministat Services? Sounds like a "connected" firm that offered bad advice. Southampton Press-why not dig into this "consultant?"
And $20 million for another aquatic recreation center when we are surrounded by beaches? Not in this economy.....

Kabot's proposed $78 million budget will eliminate 48 town jobs next year

How much did the Town spend on the Taj Mahal North Sea Transfer Station? Overhead canopies for waste paper? Lights for night dumping? 2 or 3 guards to be sure it all goes in the right place? Huh?" Oct 8, 09 4:48 PM

Southampton Village officials ask voters to approve new firehouse

I'm in the Inc. Village. Why now? Can't this wait? We've had enough grandiose municipal structures (the Police HQ, the Library) and perhaps a new Village Hall will come at us next." Oct 8, 09 4:53 PM

Blizzard snarls life on the East End

What ever happened to all those people who despise government, except when they need it? All I hear are people complaining that the snow wasn't cleared RIGHT NOW or perfectly.
With all the day laborers around, can't you find a few guys with some shovels to clear your driveway, even if your kids won't? Get a shovel.

Southampton Town Comptroller Wright reappointed

I would be absolutely astounded if S&P and Moody's don't downgrade the bond rating of Southampton to BBB and Baa1. That's just above junk. What's the plan to fund out the $5mm capital deficit? How high are projected tax rates? With the real estate market in the doldrums, foreclosures and falling values will be a huge problem, I lived throught the 1987-1992 slump and the Press made a ton on forclosure notices. Suffolk County consumes record amount of water on Friday, Southampton estates lead the way

SCWA Needs to do a few things:
1) Use emails to ratepayers for Water Alerts. I got a flyer in my mailbox that I only check on weekends. Get modern
2) Offer water efficiency training for homeowners and irrigation professionals
3) Graduated rates for homes with irrigation systems as an economic disincentive to allow waste
4) Offer incentives to switch to front loading clothes washers that use less water and detergent
5) Closed loop ground source heat pumps are the least risky from a contaminated discharge perspective and save a lot of electricity vs. air cooled A/C
6) Require large estates to have wells and not use our filtered, clorinated water for lawns that don't need treatment to human consumption standards.
This isn't rocket science, just good managment of an essential resource.

Southampton Village Police sergeant suspended

Tuckahoe Main Street would be a disaster. Moses Lane, McGee St and Bishops Lane would become backdoor thoroughfares. The added truck traffic from suppliers to the stores would worsen the trade parade every day. You'd probably have to take the potato barn on the corner of McGee to create an adequate intersection. All this would pull more business out of the center of the village. Remember too that IGA as a supermarket failed for lack of investment in the center of town which could have been a better competitor to nearby Walbaums
Politicians-this project if you support it will be a blight on your name." Jul 23, 10 8:39 AM

State to examine LIPA bill for Earl response

Also to be asked, (1) Are these actual costs? (2) Is the labor being billed at straight time, union wages, fringe benefits? (3) Is the lodging at standard rates or did LIPA and NatGrid negotiate a discounted rate given the number of rooms that were committed (4) What is the mileage rate for the vehicles and costs involved? As to mutual aid agreements, what are the terms and has LIPA & Nat GRid ever collected under them?

Fire breaks out at Southampton Elementary School on Saturday

Doesn't the fire marshall issue a report on the cause of the fire? If so, when does that happen plus isn't there an investigation by the contractor's insurance company as part of the claims adjustment process?
