No new progress in Empire, Alliance talks

It has been proven everywhere that tort reform has been put into place, that it does little to nothing to drive down costs. This is nothing more than another ludicrous right wing talking point meant to distract people from the real demon: Private Health Insurance." Sep 4, 09 2:36 PM

East Hampton residents rally for health care reform

Uirudesu, You are oh so right, but you won't change the minds of the wackos posting here. Posters like KJC and thetruthhurts can't wait to jump up and down and scream socialism when they couldn't define it if it bit them in the ____" Sep 6, 09 4:58 PM

Health care reform march held in Sag Harbor

If you lose your health coverage for any reason, say you lost your job, and you go 63 days without coverage, then you can be denied coverage for pre-existing conditions and they can deny all expenses related to that condition for up to one year. Think of how much a person could spend in one year on a serious illness. Those with a serious illness have seen their doctors about it within the last 6 months.

The insurance companies deny claims every single day. United Health is said to have denied upwards of 30% of ALL claims. Insurance premiums have skyrocketed over 30% in the last few years and are expected to go even higher. The CEO of United Health, with salary, stock options and bonuses makes $106,000.00 and hour. That is not a typo.

Insurance companies do NOT exist to keep you healthy, they exist to profit form your illness. If that does not make them demons, then I don't know what does.

Do not be fooled by lies and propaganda. The only people who win by defeating health reform are those in the insurance industry and those right-wing follower of glen beck and rush limbaugh who cry "socialism" to protect corporate interests. These are, by the way , the same people who send their kids to public schools, depend upon the fire and police departments, recieve or will receive social security, recieve or will recieve medicare - all, by definition, socialist programs." razza, have a look at the facts. The following is from the California Nurses Assn. Similar studies exist across the country. If these numbers don' t make you sick, then keep your private insurance. 75% of all Americans want a public option.

Rejecting medical claims

California's top health plans reject an average of 1 in 5 claims for treatment -- 45.7 million claims over the last seven years. Here's how their rejection rates compared during the first six months of 2009:

PacifiCare: 39.6%

Cigna: 33%

Health Net: 30%

Anthem Blue Cross: 28%

Kaiser Permanente: 28%

Aetna: 6.5%

Blue Shield: Data not available

By the way, the 10,000 physicians marching on Washington do not represent physicians as a whole. In fact, have a look at this website http://www.pnhp.org/

The site is Physicians for a National Health Program. Their mission: Single Payer National Health Insurance. That's right - SINGLE PAYER. Their membership includes 17,0000 medical professionals. Not just that, but overall 59% of all physicians support single payer.

Break it down further, one survey found that 83 percent of psychiatrists, 69 percent of emergency medicine specialists, 65 percent of pediatricians, 64 percent of internists, 60 percent of family physicians and 55 percent of general surgeons favor a national health insurance plan.

Further, Michelle Mello, a professor of Law and Public Health at Harvard. “If you were to list the top five or ten things that you could do to bring down health care costs that (tort reform) would not be on the list." " Sep 8, 09 12:10 PM

Doc4reform, Thanks for your posting. I am with you all the way. At times it is exhausting trying to talk sense to people who don't care to listen, but it needs to be said time and time again until is sinks in, just like with a child. " Sep 8, 09 2:13 PM

Obama's speech to students will be shown at EH Middle School after uproar

Undertow, you are correct. This is about middle class white folks who cannot stand having a black president. So, instead of supporting working people, children and the poor, they align themselves with the radical right. Their hatred and fear has led them to act against their own best interests. Thankfully, they are a minority - a vocal minority - but a minority nonetheless. " Sep 9, 09 8:40 AM

And it is my given right to express my belief that these protests are motivated by fear and bigotry. " Sep 9, 09 1:27 PM

No new settlements in Empire and Alliance negotiations

The president put it well. Imagine having to turn to a sick child, parent, or spouse and saying, "There is something that can make you better, but we can't afford it." That is NOT hyperbole. That is NOT liberal propaganda. It happens every single day in this country and making sure that never happens again should not be a democratic of republican issue.

This is a moral issue." Sep 9, 09 9:33 PM

Supervisor Kabot will fight DWI charge, stay in race

Mr. Shaw, I applaud you for opening this story to comments. As Ms. Kabot is a republican and most of the inappropriate comments on these boards come from her side, you don't have to worry.

If found guilty, Ms. Kabot needs to drop out of the race. " Sep 10, 09 12:21 PM

DII3, What is dishonorable is to lie to achieve your ends. While you're looking through comments, have a look at some of the whoppers from right-wingers on this site re: health care, Tim Bishop, immigration, the presidents speech to school children and on and on. I have no problem with a good back and forth and I'll continue to call out unfounded propaganda. Furthermore, since you are so interested in my comments, read the one I posted here to which you first responded: I did not say "all", I said "most". You see, misrepresentation." Sep 10, 09 2:11 PM

Report says anti-immigrant atmosphere in Suffolk County fuels violence

One needs not even read the responses to know the majority will be representative of the very hate and bigotry of which the article speaks. People like hamptons surfer who wallow in their ignorance are, thankfully, not representative of the average American. They just feel they have the most to lose so they are the most vocal. Their postings say, "Look at me! Look at me!" but contain nothing substantial or of worth to anyone beyond themselves.

Thank you, Southampton Press, for taking on a very important subject. We must not allow the static to overwhelm the message." Sep 16, 09 8:08 AM

Tim Bishop pushes the House to pass college aid bill

Mr. Blumenthal, the banks are the middlemen between the government and the student. The banks make lending more and more expensive every year and contribute to the ever-increasing costs of college.

You are constantly screaming and yelling about "big government! Watch out!" Do you truly believe there is no room for government to improve the lives of our citizens? Do you think the GI bill was big government interfering in our lives?

As with most of your party, you stand up for the big banks and corporations NOT the struggling American citizen.

It is absolutely stunning how you "less government" neocons completely ignore the fact that eight years of tax breaks to the rich and lying this country into a worthless war took America from surplus to a 1.5 trillion dollar debt. From surplus to debt. And let's not forget about TARP - that was Bush, not Obama.

The old, tired, corporate-loving philosophy of government was soundly defeated in the last election. " Sep 16, 09 8:25 AM

Report says anti-immigrant atmosphere in Suffolk County fuels violence

A quick read through the posts here and you will find such vile hate and bigotry that it is almost beyond belief. This is the Northeast people, not the deep south. The truth is that very soon white people will be a minority and those of you that espouse hate and violence will find yourselves even more marginalized than you are now." Sep 17, 09 2:59 PM

Arrest tape could be used in Kabot DWI case

The press has a duty to report all aspects of this case. Ms. Kabot is a public figure and her actions can and should be the subject of close scrutiny by the local press and citizenry. There is nothing tawdry about it - unless, of course, you are a republican. " Sep 17, 09 3:24 PM

Mr. Shaw, you are giving the readers here too much credit." Sep 17, 09 3:32 PM

Faceless, Listen, I understand you are afraid of the future. Afraid of diversity. Afraid of "brown" people. Yes, white folks will soon be a minority. There is nothing racist about that assertion. It is a fact. A fact that has the likes of you shaking in your boots so you lash out in hatred and ignorance. Good luck to you." Sep 17, 09 8:32 PM

RubyBaby, where is your indignation when non-Hispanics commit crimes? Because your boss dumped you to hire cheap labor you turn on Hispanics?! Why not turn on your boss and the legislation that allows him to get away with it? Why not fight the powerful instead of the weak? Because it is easier to place blame on those least able to defend themselves?" Sep 17, 09 8:37 PM

Town housing officials walk out of civics meeting in East Quogue

I do agree that it is ludicrous of Ms. Throne Holst to try and make an example of herself giving the truth of her finances, but this is not about her. This is about people who truly need the ehlp." Oct 1, 09 10:30 AM

As I said, I agreed that her analogy to her own life was ludicrous, but hat does not mean that this issue is about her. It is not. It is about providing housing for teachers, policemen, firemen, restaurant workers, newlyweds, etc.

I have read a number of your comments and the fact is that you will use any topic as a way to attack Democrats. It is just a distraction from real issues facing every day people." Oct 2, 09 8:50 AM

My parents bought their first home in the early sixties for about $14,000.00 - they needed a mortgage to do it, but it was still within the realm of reality. A $500,000.00 home is NOT affordable for middle class workers. Putting down $65,000.00 is not within reach. The prices simply do not equate.

Many people try to make this about "working hard". As if people who qualify for affordable housing are just lazy. This anti-government sentiment running through this country and this county is completely out of control. There is room for government to do good without all of this nonsensical "government take over hysteria". You know why millions of people were able to buy homes in the 1950's? It was called the GI bill - the government helped them." Oct 2, 09 8:57 AM

You are completely misrepresenting the issue. Take a look at Tuffy's rebuttal to your assertions. The housing is for people who live in the community first." Oct 2, 09 9:09 AM
