East End School Test Scores Drop, Reflecting Statewide Trend

It was an eye opener to read the recent test scores for our children. Although I do not believe test scores tell the whole story, it does appear that our children are ill equipped to compete in the global environment. Because the children "appear" to do well in our local schools they must be given the skills needed to compete in today's society. Testing is one way to create a benchmark to see how they measure up to the challenges they will face when they leave our local schools." Aug 9, 13 10:40 AM

New Golf Course, Housing Development Proposed In East Quogue

Proposing a golf course is one way to get approval for a change in zoning. What the developers want is to build more homes and will after the golf course folds. Look to Brookhaven Town to see the golf courses that have been built and after a short time they fold and are then able to convince the town to allow them to build more homes. They care little for the impact on the community and that is what this is about. When they build the homes they currently want more children will come into the EQ School District. The District will be forced to expand and the current residents school taxes will skyrocket because of the needed increase. Traffic along Lewis Road will increase along with that on Old Country Road which is now out of control. Anyone who lives in the area knows these roads have become a drag strip for speeders. Additional traffic is unacceptable to those of us who live in the area." Aug 9, 13 10:55 AM

The operative word is "minimize" the impact, nonetheless the local schools were impacted!!!! Having lived near in the Mill Pond Golf course area I know that situation well. The residents were told by the town officials that because they approved the golf course, no houses would be built on that property. When owners gave the remaining part of the golf course to the town they were allowed to build houses on the other part. NO change is zoning should be approved to allow this builder to circumvent the current zoning in East Quogue. The community fought long and hard to get the current zoning. " Aug 9, 13 12:00 PM

It would be interesting to know which political operatives have a stake in the change in zoning for this project? Current Suffolk GOP Leader John Jay LaValle was supervisor in Brookhaven during the Mill Pond Golf course period. Nuzzi and Preston-Scalera hail from Brookhaven and owe LaValle big. The Brookhaven Allstate land deal was rumored to have caused LaValle to not seek reelection. Vast sums of money involved here.........." Aug 9, 13 12:40 PM

Politics has everything to do with zoning changes.........

East Quogue Golf Course Proposal Back In Spotlight

Guess what the majority in East Quogue do no support a change in zone for this project!!! We do not want the increased traffic nor the chemicals from the golf course. I wonder which of the councilmen are going to vote yes, perhaps the one who is seeking to become a county legislator or the one who is no longer running for office. The article says there was an oversight is giving the community enough time to respond. Is there a reason that this must be pushed through so quickly???" Aug 23, 13 12:39 PM

Environmentalists, Residents Oppose East Quogue Golf Resort Proposal

No "The Hills at Southampton". No change in zoning for this parcel, this was made very clear at the Southampton Town Board Meeting. Now lets see what our elected officials do???" Aug 28, 13 1:05 PM

Suffolk County Planning Commission Rejects East Quogue Golf Course Development Proposal

The president of the East Quogue Chamber of Commerce wants this project, but many of the "shortsighted" residents do not. Perhaps, those of us who do not want this project and live in the community should take our business elsewhere." Sep 26, 13 9:07 PM

Southampton Town Conservative Party Recount Request Denied After Improper Votes Were Discovered

Due to the lack of parking at the EQ Elementary School it took me three trips before I could cast my vote. I had to wait until school was out before I could find a place to park. I wonder how many people decided it wasn't worth another trip to the polling place to cast their vote? Perhaps there needs to be a change in the polling place so those who want to vote can without having to make additional trips!!!" Oct 9, 13 5:54 AM

Occupancy Restrictions Offered On Proposed Golf Course Development In East Quogue

Nice of the Southampton Town Board to hold this hearing during the day so that those of us who have to work could not attend. Oh yes, if we took the day off our paying job we could. Those elected officials who vote for this project will never have my vote in any election. The heck with the quality of our drinking water and the pollution in Shinnecock Bay. Gotta bring in revenue for the store owners and increase the traffic for those of us who live nearby." Oct 9, 13 3:06 PM

Parents Frustrated By Busing Changes At East Quogue Elementary

The SHP should get the facts right, Ms Smith lives on Lewis Rd which runs along the back of EQ Elementary School. She does not live several blocks away from the school rather 11 or 12 houses away from the back entrance of the school and has a sidewalk to walk on. Her children do not have to cross any streets. What's so dangerous about walking on this sidewalk to school??? A few houses away from the school and you want a bus for your children? Please stop your whining, the exercise is good for the children. If you aren't working walk your children to school the exercise is good for you too!!!" Oct 11, 13 8:28 PM

East Quogue School District Tax Rate Nearly Double Original Estimates

Time for the Board of Education to open up ALL the collective bargaining contracts for the employees at the EQ Elementary School. Employee costs make up the majority of the budget. The real property values can no longer sustain the high pensions and benefits which are being paid to the employees. YES, the BOE can open these contracts!!! " Oct 18, 13 1:05 PM

Report Highlights Water Quality Issues On Long Island

Perfect reason why the change in zoning for "The Hills at Southampton" in East Quogue should never be approved. Are you listening Southampton Town Board and Supervisor Throne-Holst?? How about those running for the vacant seats on the Town Board? Unfortunately it is my understanding that Linda Kabot is for this project. I cannot vote for anyone who is in favor for "The Hills at Southampton," !!!

'The Hills' Application Dominates Discussion At Annual East Quogue Civic Association Meeting

I agree with Dr. Gobler on the ramifications this proposal will have on our groundwater. Scientific data backs up his position on this very important issue for the East Quogue community.I also commend Al Algieri for his fight against this proposal......traffic is horrendous now and although it appears that the developer promises no new children in the EQ Elementary School so did the developers of "Southampton Pines." "The Preserve" in East Quogue still lies vacant with no houses built, land cleared and a road that leads to nowhere. Keep fighting Al many support you in this community and no Skip Heaney we do not want your ramming "The Hills at Southampton" down our throats. " Oct 23, 13 11:54 AM

A Bench In East Quogue Commemorates A 70-Year Love Story

Very nice story about a couple who raised their children and enjoyed their life in East Quogue. It so happens that I recently had the pleasure of sitting on the bench and enjoying both the weather and the view of Shinnecock Bay. It was a beautiful day and read the plaque. I now know their life story and will reflect about Shirley and Frank Lutz every time I sit on the bench." Oct 23, 13 12:10 PM

Westhampton Beach Pharmacist Wants To Open A Drugstore In East Quogue

Yes, we do need a pharmacy in East Quogue!!! It was so sad that Center Island was forced to close after all these years.....really miss Frank. The landlord is one of those greedy individuals who would rather see his stores empty then work with community minded business owners. " Oct 23, 13 12:18 PM

'The Hills' Application Dominates Discussion At Annual East Quogue Civic Association Meeting

Since you live in Hampton Bays and not East Quogue traffic concerns would not be your problem. For those of us who live in EQ and close to this proposed development increased traffic is our concern. Speeding traffic along Lewis Road and Old Country Road make it near impossible to get safely in and out of our driveways now. We don't need the additional traffic nor additional groundwater problems in our community. Just because the EQ school could use additional revenue is not a reason to approve this project." Oct 23, 13 12:37 PM

Hundreds Gather For East Quogue Tree Lighting

Nice that the organizers of this event did not announce the open house for the East Quogue Historical Society. Why were they told not to? It is shameful that the spirit of Christmas is lacking in our hamlet. The group who did this apparently is looking to line their own pockets and care little for the history of our hamlet. In turn, I for one will not frequent the EQ businesses on Main Street. My grandchildren will not be at "Ronnie' Barn" to see Santa arrive. I will take my business elsewhere. " Dec 14, 13 11:32 AM

East Quogue Community Notes, January 9

A meeting at the EQ Elementary School with the proponents of "The Hills?" Many of us in EQ know the both the school and the business district want this project. They are a self serving bunch who do not care about our water or what the rest of us in EQ. All they want to do is line their own pockets!!!" Jan 10, 14 2:00 PM

Report: East Quogue School District In 'Moderate Fiscal Stress'

Perhaps it was not a wise move to allocate $400,000 to buy property next to EQ Elementary School!! Cardaci, Tuzzolo (Cardaci) & Tureski long time BOE members oversaw budgets and all collective bargaining contracts for many years. Just how did they go through all the reserves? There were many years when the EQ Elementary School got double-digit increases from real-property homeowners. Despite the 2% tax cap which Black & Long blame for their financial hardship my 2013/14 real property tax bill for the EQ School went up 9.26% while the EQ Library tax went up 7.33%. Just how much would my tax bill have been if the "2%" tax cap was not in place? It is my opinion that the EQ BOE have made many poor financial decisions the past several years including spending all the "reserves." " Jan 24, 14 3:14 PM

East Quogue Golf Course Development Gets Green Light For PDD Application

I was not able to attend the TB meeting in which "The Hills" was allegedly vetted by the TB. However, I did view the TB Meeting on public access TV last night. Fleming brought up many points on why this project should not be approved. Residents directly affected because of close proximately also spoke up against the project. The EQ Historical/Citizens Advisory also spoke up against the project. The EQ Civic Association is not in favor of this project, even having an attorney speak. Dick Amper of the Pine Barrens sent a speaker in his place because he could not attend. He is opposed to said project. Well respected scientists are opposed to the project. The only two who are in favor was Heaney........who owns properties which house EQ Main Street businesses and Lanzetta (EQ Chamber of Commerce). Amazing, for them it was apparent it was about additional revenue approval will bring for them!!! Nonetheless, the Supervisor, and TB with the exception of Bridget Fleming voted in favor of allowing this project to continue. Was is more appalling was the lack of transparency since all the data for this project was not given to the public. It makes one wonder, which of our elected officials might have something to gain for their approval? I found Throne-Holst and the other TB members justification for approval lacking in credibility. EQ has turned into a divided community.........I was not aware that "Skip" Heaney represented the interests of the EQ Fire Department and EQ School Administration? If both entities are in favor of this project, perhaps they should have sent a representative." Jan 27, 14 8:30 AM

Report: East Quogue School District In 'Moderate Fiscal Stress'

I guess the "moderate fiscal stress" the EQ Elementary School is under does not allow them to clear snow on their sidewalk on Central Ave!! Do they still have a maintenance staff? Any children who walk to school on Central Avenue are forced to walk in the road. " Jan 27, 14 1:29 PM

I beg to differ with you.........the sidewalk in front of the newly purchased school property is not cleared!! Unless of course it was cleared AFTER my post. Those students who have to walk south down Central Avenue are forced to walk in the snow or in the roadway. You raise the issue of who has the responsibility to clear the sidewalk in front of school property on Central Avenue???? It is your belief that it is the Town's responsibility, nonetheless to date the sidewalk has not been cleared. Apparently no one from the school has called Alex Gregor to make the sidewalk safe for students who have to walk to school!!! What does a path on school property from Lewis Road have to do with my post?????? " Jan 27, 14 4:12 PM

Correction to location......should read walking north, not south on Central Avenue toward EQ School from Montauk Highway I/F/O newly purchased school property. BTW, I am not speaking of the bus loop!!!" Jan 27, 14 4:43 PM

Hey, you answered my post with respect to the lack of snow removal on the sidewalk alleging that I am spreading untruths which is not the case !!! If your going to answer a post, please get your facts straight." Jan 27, 14 6:57 PM

cmac you keep referencing Lewis Rd which is not what my original and subsequent posts were about!!! I clearly stated CENTRAL AVENUE I/F/O the newly purchased school property !!! What part of that do you not understand??????" Jan 28, 14 7:58 AM

Cmac, nice observation. I guess those parents who have no car and are within walking distance are keeping their children home from school. BTW I noticed the sidewalk, DRIVING, to the post office, not walking. However, it would have been nice for someone to spend the 5-10 minutes it would have taken to shovel that strip. That could of occurred BEFORE we got the polar vortex after yesterdays melting causing additional ice making snow removal almost impossible. Oh, I forgot its nobodies job inside the school to pick up a shovel." Jan 28, 14 12:07 PM

eqmomof3...........you are missing my point. I am well aware of drifting snow, but nonetheless that strip had a significant amount of snow on it. NO ONE from the school (Mr. Long?) made a call to SHT or asked something to pick up a shovel and clear that strip!!!!" Jan 28, 14 12:16 PM

Developers Are Now Looking To Build 118 Luxury Homes, 18-Hole Golf Course In East Quogue

Unbelievable!!! Now that this group got the town board to approve their original development plan, they have now changed it????? Please, a "bait and switch" which most residents knew would happen once the town board let the developer move forward. Most residents are still against the proposal..........except the business owners $$$$$$$$" Feb 11, 14 6:15 PM

Yup, your right the town board approved the pre-application. Nonetheless, if they had not the developer would not have been able to move forward because of the existing zoning. That is no longer in place because of the town board approval of the pre-application." Feb 12, 14 2:02 PM

I agree, the alleged restrictive covenants will not be enforced by Southampton Town, just like the agreements in the other developments were not enforced. We were promised no students would be attending the EQ Elementary School and they are. " Feb 12, 14 2:07 PM

The five acre zoning would have allowed the developer to go ahead and build 82 homes. NOT the golf course and club house which the change has now allowed. It has now morphed into 118 homes......we know that it is likely any restriction on children attending the EQ school is unenforceable. " Feb 13, 14 6:05 AM
