Town Will Go To Court, If Necessary, To Stop Homeless Shelter At Hampton Bays Motel

Breaking News:

There are few jobs to be had anywhere! So, even though I understand that point... it just seems to me that it has the ring of a subtle "not in my backyard" stance. If economic self sufficiency will never be reached, how then are you and yours surviving?

In the surefire way of economics, those who are willing to work for less than their counterparts WILL receive those jobs. It's a fact...and i guarantee you, that they would be grateful for it.

To get the unemployment numbers down, this country should get back to manufacturing and innovation. We'd be ahead of China in no time, afterall.. aren't they using a page of our history to make themselves a world economic power? Oops.. nope. I lied.. We in fact GAVE it to them.. by importing their goods on the cheap and shipping out work to them. Why? Because they were willing to do the work at a faster pace for less money. Now we're in debt to them...

Southampton Town Board Holds Off On Plastic Bag Ban

How about uneducated... not "stupid"...

Think it's a bit less rude that way." Dec 20, 11 10:41 AM

Well, if people want to ban the use of plastic bags.. get ready for the 1,2,3 punch coming up next. Someone will invariably find a way to prove the point that all plastics are harmful and should be banned. The keyboards you type on, the material your coffee maker is made of, the casing on your smartphones, and on to ad nauseam..

But, will people support that ban? I'm thinking not so much." Dec 21, 11 6:39 PM

Hidden Cove Puts Human Face On Homelessness

I've said it before... So here it goes again.

"Not in my backyard."... That's what I'm getting from a large percentage of these comments.

Why are people so damn uncomfortable with the statistics of the homeless population? Is it because that maybe, one day, the fear of becoming homeless might actually happen to the staunch opposers themselves? Or, is it just simply the "fear" of those who ARE homeless RIGHT NOW?? It's cold outside, people... some cannot afford to fill their oil tanks.. some cannot afford to pay their LIPA bills, some cannot affod to put food on the table, IF they have a table to put it on! Some of this is a reality created by your own neighbors.

Let's face it, this is a very sad state of affairs... on either side of the coin; when there are strapping men and able bodied people taking advantage of the gevernment system that is meant to give a hand up to those who cannot (due to physical or mental disabilities) work to provide for themselves and their own.

Also, when there is this turning a blind eye by the populous of this country.. this crap only reinforces the stereotype that "Homeless people are bad". And that's unfair... how many of these homeless have YOU PERSONALLY HELPED? How many do you know from when you were a kid? How many people actually care?

Don't see many." Dec 25, 11 1:34 AM

"If you haven't noticed there is a rash of folks showing up and paying off layaway bills with kids' toys on them."

Yep, once a year. I'm sure the publicity is phenominal for one's self-value.

And as to "Whenever there is a tragedy, we give like nobody else on the planet."

So do other people... not just in this area.

We all make choices.. smart ones, dumb ones, ineffective ones, the list goes on. The bottom line here is that we're ALL people.. we're ALL the same. I'd like to think that Karma would hopefully come back and do unto me what I've done unto others. As to the woman who donated a kidney... that's awesome. That's the type of selflessness that imho, should be a part of every human being.. unfortunatly through experience, watching others in their daily lives, seeing myself thru the eyes of others.. we're not all perfect.. but we can strive to be better.

Right?" Dec 28, 11 10:49 AM

It's right off of Montauk highway.. what do you think? Busses sure do! And as to day care? Yes there are places.. babysitting with the kid in the room next door, Pine Tree in riverhead (roanoke ave.. main thoroughfare) the Southampton Headstart, and people can get rides from friends/neighbors. It's called compassion and understanding. When my sponsee and her husband were living there, I would pick her up from riverhead to help her out.. It's called doing the next right thing." Sag Harbor Considers Using Dogs To Deter Drugs At School

I personally think it's a fabulous idea...

I worked in an inpatient substance abuse facility... and believe you me, the youngn's that we had were a hell of a lot more inventive regarding the stashing of said substances than their older counterparts. A good portion of these kids today are completely uneducated when it comes to the realities that life hands a person. They have their parents hand them everything on a silver platter and when the real world comes a-knockin', they throw up their hands, look confused, pop a pill, shoot some dope and a bunch of coping mechanisms.. all because they were not told how to use the correct tools to learn how to cope. It's sad when these situations have to be brought up, but unfortunatly, they are the reality that people have to deal with today.

If you had been given the unique opportunity to experience the continual downfall that occupies the mind of an addict (as I have.. ) you would probably not be saying half of what's coming out of your mouth. Experience is a wonderful teacher.. and looking back ten years ago, I wish that the RCSD had done something akin to this then.

You bring up the legal ways to get high.. alcohol and scripts. With scripts, one has to go doctor shopping or have a rather large income to fund the street prices of these pills. With the pending thoughts among our fair lawmakers, the pharmacies will have a name, fill date, and quantity associated with said scripts within a network to more accuratly prevent an addict from the getting and finding ways and means to get more. the liquor store is a bit different. You can pay cash, credit, debit, check... and the product is onhand. Kids can get consenting adults to do it for them.. it's a lovely little game of manipulation. Really?

If you think pot only has a "slim" chance of ruining someone's life, you haven't been properly introduced to the effects of long term usage of any drug out there.. including alcohol." Jan 30, 12 2:32 PM

Xanax and alcohol do show up on a standard UDA. So does Pot, coke, heroin, acid, shrooms and the like.

I've learned the hard way... it sucks. However, once a person decides to fastrack their lives back to being productive after they've graduated from the school of hard knocks, the rewards are infinitely better. Why? Once you've been down and out, and everyone has turned away from you because of choices made while using, you learn to do for yourself because you have to. It's a process, albeit a sometimes tedious and tiresome one.. but still.. a process. One that at least for me, I'll never forget.

So, yeap.. I'm in total support of this. People can say "it's just pot" and "what about the teachers?" but in reality, it comes down to following the rules and being a productive member of society.
Rules adn Regs are there for a reason, and while some may not be as willing to respect them, the juice isn't worth the squeeze to disobey them.

Life is a fabulous teacher." Feb 3, 12 10:49 AM

Southampton ZBA Decision On Day Camp Adjourned To A Later Date

As a former camp employee (Peconic Dunes) I can reasonably say with some experience that all in all it's not that bad of an idea. I cooked 750 meals per day, that's breakfast, lunch and dinner for 250 kids.. ALL from scratch. No pre-frozen, pre-packaged, pre-cooked, pre-fabricated... freshness was the ultimate goal.. and the goal was met and exceeded.

Now, with that volume in mind (that doesn't take into account food for the staff which was 60..), what I witnessed was children who were enjoying themselves connecting with nature, learning about the world around them through interacting with counselors who had a different perspective gained through their travels and hometowns. Sometimes, just hearing someone speak with an english, australian, irish or scottish accent is enough to peak a child's interest. These kids who are 18 and above, (counselors, that is) are shown a unique opportunity to travel the world and learn about other cultures as well as our own. One kid in particular went to Venezuela on an athletic venture. And just for clarifiation... these counselors made about 1000.00 for the entire summer.. this is because their room and board and airfare was handled by grant. So, these 18 year old kids who are looking to broaden their horizons while simultaneously caring for our kids in the most professional way I've ever seen are actually doing a huge service to the local population. I didn't see one local person in a counselor position... why?? Our kids are uninterested in that position. So we have to hire outside help.

Don't judge unless you have experienced things firsthand... Just a suggestion!" Feb 23, 12 10:03 AM

Southampton Students Wear Hoodies To Honor Trayvon Martin

Those who have the credibility, knowhow, forethought and stability to legally own and use a firearm should be able to do so without recrimination. With that statement in mind, there is a common-sense caveat that also should be inserted into the purchase agreement. "If the owner of this firearm chooses to use this firearm in any way that could be considered destructive to another being's property and/or someone's life... THAN said purchaser/user of firearm WILL BE prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."

HHS: THAT would be the point... which you seem to have been informed abut and choose to ignore as well. Instead you choose to spout off and cite laws that (in the final moments of one's life) don't really matter. What matters is how a person treats another. If you feel the urge to call people out onto the carpet while citing legal garbage, don't be surprised when a moral answer comes flying back in your general direction.
