Southampton Town code enforcement slaps landlord with 50 violations at six houses

Whale - If the Town is not issuing a CO, there's a serious problem. Are you saying people should live in these types of houses? Wake up - it's for YOUR own protection that houses be built to code. But you are right about one thing - there really is no "affordable housing" out here. But that doesn't mean folks should start renting out their storage sheds to make up for it. " Jun 7, 10 11:40 AM

Sag Harbor house busted for group rental second week in a row

I have a question - there's a house on Noyac Road, opposite the Southampton Cove development, that actually has a sign out front for weekend, weekly and monthly rentals. It's been there for years. Why is nothing done with those folks???? Here's a house that actually advertises on their front lawn that they are breaking the law & nothing is done. " Jul 7, 10 8:34 AM

Connecticut casino employees file 11th-hour challenge to Shinnecock recognition

The last time I was at the CT casinos, they were practically empty. Certainly no where near the interest as when they first opened, so they should be worried over talk of a casino here. If we look far enough ahead, this may happen here as well (food for thought). However, their trying to stop the Shinnecock Nation from gaining recognition at this time is definitely foul play. The CT Nations also had to struggle against opposition. They had plenty of time to work with and help the Shinnecocks, but chose this route instead. It's time for EVERYONE to stop fighting, start listening to one another & work together. " Jul 16, 10 10:42 AM

I just heard another appeal was filed. Anyone have any info on that?" Jul 20, 10 1:05 PM

7-Eleven quietly moving into Montauk

One of my 2nd (or was it 3rd?) jobs required that I travel at all hours during the night & early morning. When I had to go to Montauk, I always charged 5 times more because everyone knew (especially in the winter) that I was, in essence, entering the Dead Zone. 7-11s have been a God send to those of us who do have to travel while all of you are tucked into your nice warm little beds. It's a place to stop, relax for a few minutes after driving hundreds of miles and enjoy a good hot cup of coffee without being harassed. " Jul 21, 10 8:59 AM

Pat Lynch continues lawsuit against town

All I can think about is what all this wasted money could do for the very animals this woman claims she cares about. It is clear her only goal is to make money for herself through ridiculous lawsuits. What a sad existence. No wonder this shelter wants nothing to do with her. From what I hear, Ms. Allen is doing a wonderful job. She should not have to deal with this crap. " Sep 17, 10 1:59 PM

Sag Harbor could start cracking down on illegal apartments

I agree with DogLover. When I was looking for a place to rent in that area, I was shocked at what was there. Generally, anyone who had a shed attached a tiny bathroom to it & charged $1,000/mo. for rent. There was one place where the septic was actually overflowing under the shed (which was built on pilings as it was on a hill). When I pointed this out, the guy said, "Yeah, I have to throw more sand under there." These places must meet code - both sanitary & fire. One accident with a hot plate in a closet & that whole village will go up in flames. " Oct 19, 10 9:15 AM

Two Charged In Water Mill Deer Poaching Incident

A couple of years ago in Swan Lake, NY, a 16 MONTH old girl was killed by a deer hunter while INSIDE her home. THIS is why there are laws. Every year there are hundreds of deaths (of humans) associated with stupid hunters. Many thanks to the DEC for finally looking into this problem. " Dec 20, 10 8:50 AM

Bee Hives Targeted On East Hampton Farm

There have been numerous articles this past year on honey bee colonies dying off for unknown reasons. This is a major concern to scientists as maybe this is a hint that something is terribly wrong with our environment. Bees are necessary to help pollinate plants & crops. We lose the bees, we lose crops, we lose food supplies, not to mention the loss of their delicious honey. This act of violence is atrocious. Honey bees harm no one. Whoever did this is very sick & should be fined & made to reimburse Ms. Woltz not only for her lost bees, but for her lost income & livelihood. " Dec 28, 10 10:47 AM

Holidays Are Especially Difficult For Homeless

My grandmother used to have this expression - "there, by the grace of God, go I." I cannot believe these comments. Anyone's luck can change in an instant. What if you became ill, or lost your job, or your spouse? You need 2 incomes to live these days - especially in the Hamptons. I hope each of you thank God every day that you are so healthy & wealthy that you do not have to worry about where your next meal is coming from. " Dec 28, 10 11:40 AM

Two Charged In Water Mill Deer Poaching Incident

If you need hard numbers, ICE, I suggest you visit www.all-creatures.org/cash/accident-center.html. And those are only the ones that get reported. " Dec 29, 10 9:01 AM

Springs Residents Sound Off About Illegal Multi-Family Housing

We're going around in circles on this argument. Owners rent out their houses because they can't afford the taxes. Taxes go up because now there are more kids & need for services. The ONLY way to control this situation is to increase the fines. Right now, if someone is issued a summons for an illegal apartment or group rental, the owner/landlord hires an attorney who plea bargains the violations down to a couple hundred bucks. This is peanuts compared to what the landlord gets for rent. If the fines are raised to $25,000-50,000 AND ENFORCED, this problem will immediately go away. " Jan 21, 11 1:27 PM

Farming Use Pitched For Aldrich Lane Park

Right now this piece of land is a garbage field, which no one enjoys. There are no views, no wetlands, no saving of farmer owned farmland, no preservation of pine barrens or groundwater - absolutely NO public benefit whatsoever. It should never have been purchased with CPF. With that said, it's time to correct this mistake & make it into something everyone can enjoy - a park, with facilities, for everyone. Luxury Recycling Charitable Organization Comes To The East End

It's about time!!! This is done in other states, but when I asked a New York builder why it isn't done here he said it was because of insurance liability issues. He admitted throwing out beautiful woodwork, new fixtures, new appliances, etc. - when all those items could be re-used, recycled and not thrown into our landfills & oceans. " Feb 25, 11 2:12 PM

Town Changes Leaf Pick-Up Program Again

The leaf program never worked, especially under Masterson, because you always have those few idiots who can't follow instructions. Like those who haul their leaves to the street AFTER the Town comes through. Or those who drop them into the road, not the shoulder, so when it rains, they all flow into the catch basins causing flooding problems. Or (like my neighbor) use the program to cut down all the trees on their lot. Our seniors should not be ignored & the Town can easily map where those folks are. NO ONE's yard should be fully cleared. In my area we have clearing restrictions. Blow the leaves into the woods. Start a compost pile for your garden. I constantly have guys stopping by asking if I need help with my yard. According to my tax bill, $149 goes to Highway and $2,500 to the school. Do the math. Stop wasting time playing with leaves & fix the roads. Our roads have been ignored for years & are so deteriorated most have to be ripped up and totally repaved. " Apr 13, 11 9:12 AM

Parking On Noyac Bay Avenue A Heated Subject at Southampton Town Hall

Just what we need - more NIMBYism. Let me get this straight. These folks have their own private yacht club, their own private marina, exclusive use of Clam Island, and now they want to keep everyone off "their" Town roads and public beaches?? Gee - wonder what kind of taxes they're paying here for all these exclusive rights & privileges. Isn't Water Mill going through this same thing with Bay Lane - yet another public area the "new" homeowners are trying to close down? " Apr 15, 11 2:35 PM

Montauk Man Charged With Drop-Kicking. Hitting Puppy

It is unbelievable, in this day & age, that there are still morons who think abusing a poor defenseless animal is acceptable behavior. Now we know why this poor little pup tried to escape. He obviously had more brains than his former owner. Many thanks to the witness, Mr. Gross & the police for getting involved. Now let's hope the courts do their job. " Jun 10, 11 11:25 AM

Southampton Post Office's "Green" Landscaping Draws Complaints

Here's an idea - why don't we pave over the "lawns" to add more parking. " Jun 13, 11 8:38 AM

Southampton Town Keeps Cooling Center In Hampton Bays Open

There are a lot of seniors who are not fortunate enough to have air conditioning. I check on one lady who just sits outside under a tree fanning herself with a newspaper. She has no window to install a unit or even a fan and is afraid if she replaces a window someone will break in. It's not fun being older on a budget. So....I thank the Town for thinking of these folks. " Jul 22, 11 10:39 AM

Noyac Road Project Won't Happen In 2011

Sagharborparent - you are correct - the speeding issue must be addressed. I visit Cromer's (only when I'm heading west) and park on Bay Avenue & walk around. This area is a mess, with landscape trucks parked all over, folks trying to make left turns, cars & dump trucks flying around the corner, then traffic coming & going on the 3 near-by roads. Speed bumps to the east & west would work, plus making Elm one-way. Cedar should be closed to the public as folks are parking all over that road & blocking emergency access. Two the store owners here own property behind their stores. The Town should require they use same for over-flow parking. " Aug 1, 11 12:53 PM

Police: Eastport South Manor Teacher Charged With Fourth DWI

Great example for our children. We're paying hundreds of thousands to our school districts & this is the best they can come up with? Drunks & heroin addicts? Half of a teacher's job is to be someone the kids can look up to. Shame on the administrators in this school!" Aug 3, 11 1:16 PM

EQmom - You are absolutely correct. As someone who lost a close friend to a DWI, I have no sympathy for anyone who drinks & drives. I give you a lot of credit for seeking help & I wish you the best of luck with your recovery. " Aug 10, 11 9:52 AM
