East End haunts are scarce but still there

I lived in a haunted house. At first, I brushed off the noises to the wind & the fact that old houses creak. But then a floorboard, which only made noise when stepped on, creaked, and then a chair that creaked only when sat in creaked on its own, so I started wondering. There would be pockets of cold air & unexplained "shadows." I never got a creepy feeling - it just felt like someone was watching over me. After doing a little history, I did discover someone died in the house, so I started calling him by name & adjusted to the noises and other oddities. When we had to sell the house, we did not mention the ghost. We drove past the house about 3 years later & noticed it looked abandoned. I contacted the broker, who advised the new owners "where having trouble with the house." When I asked her what she meant, she told me they thought someone was breaking in, but nothing was ever taken. They had the locks changed 5 times. And they were constantly hearing things & the house was never warm enough for them. I really wish I could get the house back, and I really wanted to let the man's family know he was still "around," but I figured they would think I was nuts. " Nov 5, 09 9:21 AM

Drop in donations worries operators of Hampton Bays wildlife rescue center

These folks do a wonderful job. I called them once to rescue a fawn & they came immediately, and they even saved a bat I brought them. They are a tremendous asset to the community and I encourage anyone who enjoys wildlife to help these folks out. " Nov 5, 09 9:26 AM

Southampton considering new graveyard protection laws

This legislation is long over-due & the fines should be increased. Those fines should be imposed not only on the landowner, but on the bulldozer operators as well. What is more important, though, is that these sites be documented NOW. There are enough old-timers left who know or remember where they are. There should be a reporting system set up, where someone can notify the Town of such a site. "Upon discovery" is too late. " Nov 9, 09 10:11 AM

Supreme Court lifts injunction on use of Aldrich Park

This is a park. People hang out in parks. So if the Town buys a farm, it can't be farmed? And if a pond is purchased, I can't take a kayak on it? An historical house purchased, we just let it rot? CPF can also be used for "recreational purposes." I hang out in parks...I sit, eat, walk my dog. That's what you do in a park -not leave it vacant to gather garbage. There should be a driveway into this place, a parking area, bathrooms and benches. FOR EVERYONE. " Nov 24, 09 11:18 AM

What sickens me is folks who assume everyone is illegal. Is that like the "guilty until proven innocent" theory? Gee, I was hanging out at 7-11 the other day - guess that makes me illegal, too, huh? Wow - what small minds we have. I amend my prior post - darwin is right, we also need a food concession stand. Maybe some of you "residents" who think it's beneath you to mow a lawn or wash a dish can run it. Oh, and by the way, Jan, "residents" already have a hiring hall - it's called unemployment - which is paid with your tax dollars as well. That is where YOU get to sit at home in your barcalounger and get paid for doing nothing but complain about "illegals" taking your job away from you. " Nov 24, 09 3:48 PM

Southampton Town could vote on dark skies legislation soon

I have a neighbor who installed stadium lights around his tennis court so he can play at night. When another neighbor complained, he laughed, installed more lights & then redirected them into that guy's bedroom. All you have to do to comply is drop by Home Depot & buy lower wattage bulbs. If you can't afford new bulbs, how the heck can you afford a house in the Hamptons? And iIf you don't know how to install a light bulb, you shouldn't even own a house. " Dec 7, 09 4:40 PM

Seventh day of deliberations ends with no verdict in Oddone case

I do not envy this jury. I was almost picked for a jury on a murder case. You have to remember that juries are picked well after the initial arrest, news reports, gossip, etc. It's very difficult to walk into a court room & ignore everything you've heard/seen up to that point. You wonder why information you heard, which you think is relevant, is not mentioned. Could you ignore facts which you think are important? As seen here, everyone has their own opinions (even without the facts), so you can imagine what this jury is going through. I must comment on the height & weight issue, though. I've seen a 5'3" woman easily take out a 6'1" guy. Neither of these men were unfamiiar with fighting. So the only issue here is: you're being an idiot & are asked to be a responsible adult, for your own safety. Do you do as you are asked, or continue to be an idiot? My thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved. " Dec 10, 09 9:54 AM

Southampton Town Board adopts dark skies legislation

Real World - No one cares about your little floodlight, unless you have it aimed into your neighbor's bedroom. This law addresses blatant idiots, like my neighbor who installed 21 spot lights to illuminate his tennis court at night, on a one acre lot. I thank Councilwoman Graboski for keeping with this." Shinnecock Indian Nation wins preliminary federal recognition

Congratulations to the Shinnecock Nation! As far as a casino is concerned, I understand the Shinnecock's desire to provide a better life for their families, so I would hope a facility can be built that provides not only jobs and revenue for those who need it, but tries to preserve the natural history of our area. I have full faith in the Trustees & wish them all the best with regard to their next endeavor. " Dec 16, 09 4:49 PM

Around Town Hall: Southampton Town details hamlet boundaries in new map

The historic boundaries of the hamlets are important and should not be changed. The only reason they are is for financial profit, i.e. the larger a hamlet is, the more money it receives for fire protection, park purchases, etc. Historic boundaries are also important when researching land records. There would also be a MAJOR difference as far as real estate taxes are concerned. A house say in Speonk is valued considerably less than one with a Remsenburg address. By the way, EE68, I hear Speonk has been eliminated. You may want to check that out. " Dec 17, 09 9:27 AM

Southampton Town Trustees delay commercial scallop harvest until after hunting season

This is actually quite humorous. Are we trying to protect the baymen from being shot at by the hunters, lest they should be mistaken for being ducks? Or are the hunters so stupid they can't hit a duck if there is background noise? " Jan 11, 10 3:41 PM

So, Matt - you telling me the ducks are smarter than the hunters? :) That I would believe!!" Jan 12, 10 9:07 AM

Southampton Town is prepared to withdraw lawsuit over Aldrich Lane park

I find it odd we're calling this lot a "park," yet no one can use it as same. There's no scenic vistas here, it's not being farmed, it's not environmentally sensitive, nor does it contain wetlands. It's a garbage collection field that only gets mowed when it's in the news. Why the heck was it purchased to begin with? Anyone know what the Town & Village paid for this piece of dirt that only benefits 3 people? " Jan 26, 10 4:10 PM

Wildlife Rescue Center rehabilitates unprecedented number of dovekies

These folks are awesome. I've called them to rescue animals & have brought critters to them, including a bat once. A big thank you to Virginia & company and to everyone who takes the time to try to help an animal in need. " Jan 29, 10 9:24 AM

East Hampton Building Inspector suspended after Sag Harbor altercation

I've known Tom for a long time. I've also had dealings with the Sag Harbor Police. They almost arrested me once for backing up 2 feet on Main Street when I saw someone leaving a parking spot. The cop literally screamed at me to move it, and when I tried to explain I wanted a parking spot, he yelled even more & threatened to arrest me. For trying to pull into a parking space? I also witnessed them yell at an elderly woman with a walker when she tried to jay-walk. They made her go all the way down to a crosswalk, while they stood there laughing. Their summer rent-a-cops are snot-nosed little punks who use foul language & have no respect for anyone. " Jan 29, 10 9:38 AM

Dear Bayman1 - The moral of the story is two-fold: 1. there's two sides to every story, and 2. this department has issues. Here's another story for you: I had to stop into their station once & found the door locked. After knocking for about 20 minutes (good thing the ex wasn't after me with a shotgun) they advised they kept the door locked because they didn't want to be bothered. By whom - someone who may need help?!! Yeah, I know - I should have been arrested that time for harassment & attempted B&E. Good thing the ex didn't shoot me, then they could have added loitering and littering to my ever lengthening rap sheet. " Feb 1, 10 9:06 AM

You might want to wander down to the library, Bayman1, and check out the New York State Penal Laws....I think around Article 160. Since Sag Harbor IS in New York, these laws would apply to them as well....and you. " Feb 4, 10 9:03 AM

Very good...I'm so proud of you!" Feb 4, 10 1:25 PM

Gee....just when I though I was making progress.....I should send you back to the library, but I'll be nice. Now go to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burglary. " Feb 4, 10 4:41 PM

Whale beached in East Hampton survives first attempt at euthanization

Sam - Ever consider starting up another marine rescue group? Everyone knows you are the only real expert on this Island. It's a shame your knowledge, skills & love of these wonderful creatures is not being used to help them anymore. " Apr 9, 10 9:23 AM

Shinnecocks see beached whale as link to past

Thank you to the members of the Shinnecock Indian Nation for helping this poor whale's spirit make its way to its Creator. We can only hope in its next life there will be no such total disregard for one of God's creatures. " Apr 21, 10 10:31 AM

Officials want to use Southampton Town's Community Preservation Fund to save Stony Brook Southampton

Hey, the Town purchased the property to the south of 7-11 and IT didn't fall under any of these categories either. If you check to see what is being purchased & for how much you would be surprised, at say the least." Apr 23, 10 9:47 AM

East Hampton teenager wants to walk with high school class

When I was in high school (out here) we had a number of students who could not even read, but because they were into sports, the teachers passed them along and they graduated. Here, we obviously have a talented, responsible student, who wants to learn, and isn't afraid of hard work, and the school is fighting him?? This school should be ashamed of itself. You are there to HELP kids, not put obstacles in their way. " Apr 27, 10 10:00 AM

FAA to impose new regulations for helicopters

Anyone have a map of the new route? I heard it runs over the southerly tip of Gardner's Island. That would bring it just over Roses Grove Road, if you were to travel in a straight line to the airport. " May 24, 10 3:00 PM

East Hampton citizens cry out against dark sky extension

Is it just me, or am I missing something here? Businesses were given 4 years to go to Home Depot & buy lesser wattage light bulbs & they can't afford to do this? Are things really that bad in East Hampton where they can't afford a pack of light bulbs valued at what - $3.99? " May 26, 10 10:01 AM
