Student art will be screened from Harbor voters

This is absolutely the stupidest thing I have heard to-date. The school and voters should be proud of their students' abilities. These kids work very hard and their talent should not be screened off from anyone. " May 4, 09 4:46 PM

Money designated for affordable housing never moved; housing fund in the red

Sorry, I have to agree with Kabot. If the Town WAS run like a real corporation, the comptroller would be solely responsible. This is why a company hires employees. If that employee screws up, they get FIRED. Unfortunately, Town employees cannot be fired, so their attitude is they don't really care. They get paid just for showing up & breathing. As a side note - I hope whoever was in charge of obtaining those 72-H properties had the intelligence to check titles. " May 6, 09 1:48 PM

I just figured out how the Town is going to "locate" some extra money - anyone else get their reassessment notice yet? Holy crap! Guess I'll be going back to working 3 jobs just to eat. The Whitbys still giving out food? " May 7, 09 11:02 AM

Two hurt after car hits utility pole, bursts into flames

It's heartwarming to read a story where good comes from bad. Too many folks would have just passed by and done nothing. My grandmother used to say that angels did walk among us. Mr. Moccio is proof she was right. Mr. Moccio - you are a hero. You risked your own life to save not one, but two strangers in need. May God bless you. " May 11, 09 10:28 AM

Man killed in Noyac crash

This accident could have been avoided if the speed limit was being enforced. This is the second fatality on this road due to speeding in the last few months. And let's not forget the guy who decided to drive through the Whalebone store. Every other tree and pole has been hit by either speeders or DWIs. How many more deaths will it take for the Town to do something? " May 11, 09 11:48 AM

Other sources have already determined vehicle was speeding. This road is infamous for accidents due to speeding and DWIs. This is the second death in the last few months. There was even a vehicle that actually crashed through the Whalebone store. Every other tree and pole has been hit here. Yet, the Town does nothing to enforce the speed limit. This road has been ignored for years. Remember how long it took to fix "Dead Man's Curve?"" May 11, 09 3:57 PM

New rest rooms, renovations at Big Duck Ranch

Isn't the north end wetlands? How about a nice little nature trail instead." May 13, 09 8:59 AM

2009 sees more North Sea fires in a year than most firefighters can remember

These guys responded to a puff-back at my house. Quick, efficient, polite, helped me calm down, made sure all was ok before they left. I cannot thank them enough! You have to be a very special kind of person to run to the aid of strangers at all hours. Many thanks, guys (& girls), for being there! " May 13, 09 9:08 AM

Waitresses are people too

Great article....it should be posted on all restaurant doors. I've only had a couple of bad experiences with waitresses out here. Once the restaurant was so crowded the poor girl couldn't even get to our table. And when she did, the food was cold. The second was because someone's kid kept knocking over the water, the ketchup, then decided to start throwing the silverware across the room, then started crying when his parents ignored him. Both waitresses received a tip close to the total bill. This is one job that is NOT fun. " May 15, 09 9:25 AM

Southampton reassessments do not reflect economic downturn

I'd prefer the tax rate go up - at least everyone will be equal. A friend of mine bought a house last year for $355,000. He was just reassessed at $850,000. His neighbors are at $400,000-450,000. His house is smaller. How unfair is that?!! " May 15, 09 3:31 PM

A call to protect the dead

Thank you Ms. Catalano for all your efforts. There are a lot of these small graveyards out here - many with just a single person buried in them. Many farmers just buried their hired help in the back yard. local414 - There used to be one south of Trout Pond - don't know if it is still there. The problem is once it gets out where they are & if they are in a secluded spot, then vandals get to them. Then once the stones (if they ever had them) go missing, folks forget & they end up being paved over or built on. If anyone has time, the old Town Record books (going back to 1700-1800s) do give hints as to where many of these sites are, except you need to know the history of the area because they will use designations such as: "...2 rods off the road to Sagg Harbour" or "behind the old mill near Jedediah Smith's house." I believe, however, there are State laws that protect these sites, but no one enforces same. " May 28, 09 10:25 AM

I also recall the one out in Morton. Maybe when Ms. Catalano is done with East Hampton, we can convince her to do the same thing in Southampton Town??? Or we can do what North Haven did - just dig everyone up & send them out-of-state." May 28, 09 2:15 PM

Near-death leads to changes at East Hampton dump

The old Sag Harbor dump used to have an area where folks could leave decent items for others - whether it was furniture, clothes, toys, books. This is a wonderful way to recycle and help others out at the same time. The EH dump ends up with some really nice items - whatever the rich get bored with - old or new - they just throw out. There should be no parking in the area where this stuff is left. You either QUICKLY drop off or pick up. No kids allowed. No loitering. No hogging. Give everyone a chance to score a good fine, not just the select few who have time to sit there for hours. Unfortunately, it always takes a few to ruin a good thing for others. " Jun 15, 09 2:29 PM

Supervisor pushes plan to adopt driveway standards for emergency vehicles

I've seen some pretty inaccessible driveways around here, especially in the heavily wooded areas. However, I think it would be more effective if the Fire Departments simply sent out a notice to those folks saying, "Hey, we can't access your driveway, so in the event of a fire - you're on your own." I can guarantee THAT would be a lot more effective than more laws, permits, fees, etc. Where the heck are you going to put a "turning radius" on a 10,000 square foot lot? Will all that extra clearing count towards those lots with clearing restrictions? If so, this could be another way to reduce house sizes! " Jun 19, 09 10:38 AM

Highway Superintendent might become an appointed position

Give me a break...have we forgotten about the asphalt contract fiascos already? Guess whose roads got plowed first this past winter. Wasn't mine. My "Fall" clean-up didn't happen until the following Spring. And I'm still falling into potholes on my street, where the drywells have been over-flowing for 5 years now. Let's not forget about all those roads that flood during a rainfall. What does the Highway Super do - plops orange barrels in the middle of the lakes. How about FIXING the problems! What's my recourse? I call & nothing happens because I don't contribute to the Super's political campaigns. Right now he answers to no one & does whatever he pleases. Time for a change. East Hampton Town Building Inspector, Don Sharkey, found dead at 47

Whenever I needed hlep with a building matter, Don was always there - most of the time dropping everything to get what I needed. I've worked with him for many, many years. He was the most knowledgeable, nicest person you ever wanted to meet. The Town has lost a true gentleman. " Jul 7, 09 9:31 AM

Pretrial hearings begin in Reister murder case

Here's my wish: may the trial go swiftly, may justice be done, may the key be thrown away on this useless life, and may Andrew's family be at peace. And may all others who think they can come out here & do whatever they want think twice about really matters in life. " Jul 30, 09 8:45 AM

Southampton phys ed teacher McCready resigns post

Hey, I heard Ted Bundy was a real nice guy, too. Teachers are not there to be nice. They are there to educate; to help our children grow; to be someone to look up to & that kids want to emulate. All too often these days parents don't have the time to spend with their kids like they used to, which makes our teachers even more responsible for not only their education, but their growth. Therefore, their standards must be much higher. And, yes, they are only human, but they chose this profession. Once they break their oath, once they choose something like drugs over a child's welfare, then our children suffer. " Aug 12, 09 9:17 AM

Concrete truck overturns on North Sea Road

Ride the truth - you are correct. More & more heavy construction trucks are using the back roads & are flying down them because there's no cops back there. This morning alone I passed 8 of them flying down Noyac Road. We've already had two deaths on that road alone this year (that I know of). Yet, no one is doing a thing to calm traffic back there. Southampton Town Trustees win suit brought by Brookhaven fishermen

The Trustees have been enforcing their rights under the Dongan Patent for ages. They, not the state, own certain lands under the waters. They enforce these rights solely for us - the Town residents. We all owe the Trustees a great deal for protecting what is rightfully ours. Congrats, and thank you!" Sep 1, 09 8:59 AM

Supervisor Kabot will fight DWI charge, stay in race

What I find extremely disturbing is that some of you are joking around and condemning this woman for an ALLEGED DWI, yet a TEACHER (of young children) was recently arrested (for the SECOND time) for HEROIN use & the comments made relating to that story were, "Oh, gee, he's so nice, let's forgive & forget." We ALL make mistakes. Consider yourselves lucky that YOUR mistakes don't make front page news. " Sep 11, 09 10:57 AM

Report says anti-immigrant atmosphere in Suffolk County fuels violence

I find it hysterical that some of you can't respond to or follow comments - made in English - yet want everyone in the USA to learn a second or third language. How on earth are we going to communicate if everyone is speaking a different language & half of us can't even follow ENGLISH anymore? For all of you who think we should start speaking in our ancestral tongues, try wandering into a hospital and asking for help in Russian or French and see how far you get. " Sep 22, 09 9:16 AM
