Westhampton Beach Chief Marks Final Day In Office, Mayor To Remain For Another Week

Jul 2, 2014 12:44 PM

As one Westhampton Beach Village official marked his final day in office Monday morning, another found out that his tenure would continue for an extra week.

Westhampton Beach Police Chief Ray Dean had his final day in office commemorated by a ceremony outside Village Hall on Monday morning, while Mayor Conrad Teller was informed that he would remain at the head of the village for another week—until Monday, July 7—before handing over the reins to Mayor-elect Maria Moore.

After examining the village law, Westhampton Beach Village Attorney Richard Haefeli discovered this past weekend that the new fiscal year must begin on the first Monday of July, Ms. Moore wrote in an email. Accordingly, the village’s organizational meeting, which was erroneously set for Tuesday, July 1, will be postponed until Monday, July 7—meaning that Mr. Teller will remain in office until noon that day.

Ms. Moore, who is set to make $12,562 during her first year in office, will officially be sworn in at noon, Village Clerk Elizabeth Lindtvit said, though a second ceremony will be held that evening, during the village’s annual organizational meeting that begins at 7 p.m.

At that meeting, Village Board members Charlie Palmer and Ralph Urban will also be administered their oaths of office. Both men will begin their second terms of office.

Meanwhile, friends, family and police officers from nearby police departments such as Quogue Village, Southampton Town and East Hampton Town gathered outside Westhampton Beach Village Hall on Monday to wish Chief Dean farewell.

The officers lined the steps leading up to the police department entrance and met the chief with a salute as he walked out the door shortly after 9 a.m.

Chief Dean gave hugs to friends and family members who gathered along Potunk Lane, exchanged handshakes with fellow police officers, including Westhampton Beach Police Lieutenant Trevor Gonce, his protégé and pick to take over the position of chief. The Village Board must select an interim chief, but as the ranking officer Lt. Gonce will head the department in the meantime, Mr. Teller said on Tuesday.

Chief Dean said he was proud to end his 15-year career alongside a talented group of officers and he was glad to share the moment with his family on Monday.

“Pretty humble and proud,” Chief Dean said of his state of mind following the ceremony. “The show of support is unbelievable and very gratifying.”

Typical of the Teller- Dean- Haefeli administration. How much more damage can they do in a week? Possibly I should NOT ask that question. It will be interesting to see the skeletons in the closet of Teller and Dean after their "transparent" administration.

Realistic- First, what does Dean have to do with this? With the exception of his ceremony? Secondly, isn't it the BREATH OF FRESH AIR MAYOR MOORE's responsiblity to know her own Local Law? Shouldn't this Village be THANKFUL that Haefeli brought it up? Seems as if he is looking out for HER best interest along with the Village's? Or will Moore continue to use her usual and customary response of "I dont know what I'm going to do..." You are so far lost your comments are beyond uneducated.... You ...more

Be careful beachbme realistic is gonna start spewing facts at you which they have yet to do. I've yet to see one legitimate fact yet, only personal issues of their delusional reality.

Beachbme- Holywood- Did i hit a sensitive cord? A relative of your? Were you on the "friends and family" plan of the Mayor also?

Lets see nothing personal with me its just when MY tax dollars are being spent I expect conservatism- responsibility. Afterall both Teller-Dean- Haefeli have a fiduciary responsibility to the taxpayers.

1. Dean "large" sign on bonus and FAT contract,
2. Teller paying a former employee $10k exit bonus without trustee approval.
3. Teller -Haefeli ...more

They are no relative of mine. I am a fairly new, young resident of the Village just as concerned as you. However, what does ANY of the information you provided have to do with THIS article?
1. Chief Dean's "bonus" and FAT contract - were all approved by OUR elected officials.
2. Who did he pay at $10k exit bonus to?
3. The "overpayment" of the Village employees happens in EVERY SINGLE municipality. It happens in almost EVERY municipality, however unlike the Village of WHB ...more

The Chief does not earn or get paid for overtime. Continue to make up facts.

Way to go beachbme obviously realistic doesn't know how govt works, to believe that the mayor and police chief can have that much power to dictate everything in village govt is rediculous.
Realistic I believe the facts have been stated by myself in the previous article and by beachbme now. Your the one that sounds so angry, delusional and being owed something. I believe beachbme said it right educate yourself on how municipal govts work and maybe you'll finally get it.

Beachbme- Hollywood- etc only need to review the record, reasearch the last 4 to 5 years, and attend the meeting to see that i am correct. If you choose to be blind to it then nothing I can do about that. The record (facts) speaks for itself and so did the Voters.

For the issues that regard Mayor Teller, you babbled allegations, and apparently you cannot substantiate them. As for Chief Dean, your issue #1 is invalid as his compensation is in lone with other Chiefs for similar sized departments. and #9, I called you on that. A) the Chief doesn't earn overtime, and B) when did this alleged incident occur?
You are worse than hs students yapping about todays drama .Do you say OMG a lot? What do you do when you are not sitting at your desk making up lies?

Realistic once again you have not presented any information having any objective reality. You claim the Chiefs salary to be exuberant as compared to whom or what other Chief on Long Island since this is where we live. We are asking for examples not just your opinion or your belief. We have rebutted all your claims in all your other accusations. Fact is what you say happened with the over payment to employees did happen as an oversight that was caused by leap year and was corrected as it was in all ...more
