The long-awaited Best Yet Market in Westhampton Beach opened its doors to customers on Wednesday afternoon.

The 29,324-square-foot supermarket, which was officially approved by the Westhampton Beach Planning Board on May 12, marks the first time the village has had a full-fledged grocery store since last fall, and opens just in time for the busy Memorial Day weekend.

On Wednesday morning, store team leader Jose Collazo confirmed that the supermarket was planning to open around noon that day, saying the store is ready to go. “We are excited to be in the area,” he said.

Last year, Best Yet Market won the right to be a tenant at the Sunset Avenue property with a $4 million bid. They replaced the now-bankrupt Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company, which owned the Waldbaum’s that formerly occupied the space. In leasing the space, Best Yet agreed to some of the upgrades originally planned—and never completed—by Waldbaum’s a decade earlier, and have added some more of their own to be carried out in three phases over the next two years.

Over the last several months, representatives from the company and the village have been negotiating the multi-step renovation plan, with phase one being allowed to commence during negotiations to allow the store to open as soon as possible. Phase two of the project, which will start in the fall, will include moving sidewalks, installing new landscaping and repaving the entire parking lot a second time—workers scrambled to lay new asphalt down this past week. Phase three will bury power lines that run along the property.

On Tuesday, Westhampton Beach Village Building and Zoning Administrator Paul Houlihan confirmed that he had conducted the final village walk-through of the property earlier this week, adding that everything was in order.

Even though the supermarket is open, the front of the building will remain bare with scaffolding until mid- to late-June due to a delay in manufacturing the front gable. The Planning Board opted to allow the building to open regardless, provided it is safe for customers and is clearly labeled as an active construction zone.
