Developer Still Wants To Build Grocery Store In Westhampton Beach

The Westhampton developer who wants to build a grocery store in Westhampton Beach is still pushing the village to amend its code.

Last week, Andrew Mendelson filed an amended petition with Village Hall, and this time he is requesting that the words “grocery stores” be added as a permitted use in the B-3 Business district only. The developer, who owns two adjoining properties along the west side of Old Riverhead Road—one that’s zoned B-3 Business and the other I-1 Industrial—originally asked the village to allow supermarkets under both zoning designations. Currently, supermarkets are allowed only in the village’s B-1 Business district, which includes Main Street and Sunset Avenue.

He explained that his latest request will not require the village to revamp its master plan, which was last updated in 2006. If the village agrees to the change, Mr. Mendelson said he will then file a change of zone request and ask that both properties, which total about 4.2 acres combined, be zoned B-3 Business.

Rebecca Molinaro, the Westhampton Beach Village Clerk, said on Tuesday that the village has no response to Mr. Mendelson’s latest request.

On Monday, the developer said he will do whatever it takes to build a grocery store on his land, including paying for another zoning study that the village estimated would cost $30,000. He added that he has a grocery store that is interested in opening a store in the village, though he declined to share the name of the business.

Certainly it would -- he says "revamp," others say "revise."

This guy has already contributed significantly to killing the revitalization of Riverhead's Main Street -- Westhampton Beach should JUST SAY NO!

Didn't the press report this exact same article last week and the week before that and the week before that.....didn't the Mayor say the developers proposal does not comply with the Village code......don't we have a modern day Master Plan? Doesn't everyone have to follow the rules? After all this is not Steubenville, is it?

Let him build. Competition is good. It's his money. My taxes might be decreased if he's successful. Let's face it. A business man wants to take a chance. His dollars. Compare the expertise our our Mayor and Trustees against this Developer and who has done better? Let's face it the Mayor and Trustees are struggling to keep the tax cap under the 2 percent cap this yr. in my business we decreased the budget 5 percent and were successful. Why can't the Village?
