Judge Approves Sale Of Westhampton Beach Waldbaum's

Oct 28, 2015 1:09 PM

The Waldbaum’s supermarket in Westhampton Beach has been officially purchased for $4 million by Bethpage-based Best Yet Markets.

On Tuesday, U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge Robert Drain finalized the sale, meaning he would not entertain a plea by members of United Food & Commercial Workers Local 342 to reject Best Yet Market’s bid because the company does not employee unionized workers. They had asked the judge to accept the second-highest bid, made by Kings Food Market. The bid amount was not disclosed.

Best Market has agreed to offer 25 percent of the job openings at the Westhampton Beach supermarket to current union members who will be displaced by the bankruptcy filings of the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, the former owner of the Waldbaum’s, according to a press release issued this week by Best Yet Markets.

Earlier this month, The Press reported that Best Yet intends to close the supermarket for several months—possibly starting in mid-November—to complete a massive renovation that includes expanding into the former National’s building next door.

“We look forward to serving the community for many years to come,” Best Yet Vice President Or Raitses wrote in an email to Westhampton Beach Mayor Maria Moore, which she shared with The Press. “I know the village and surrounding area will greatly benefit from the revamped store we will bring when we open this spring.”
