Voters Approve Parrish Art Museum Funding Proposition

Jun 5, 2017 11:17 AM

The Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill received approval from a majority of Southampton School District voters—129-34 opposed—to collect taxes to help fund its operations for another year.

The vote, held on Saturday, June 3, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., permits the museum to levy $339,569 in property taxes to help cover the museum's exhibition and program expenses for the 2017-2018 school year. The funding from district taxpayers is nearly $13,000 higher than the current year.

Because of the funding, according to the Parrish, students and children under 18 will be provided free admission to the museum, while senior citizens can enter the museum at a reduced rate. The museum will also offer on- and off-site programming for local teachers and art classes, plus tours and workshops for children, and more than 100 programs for residents of all ages.

An important oversight in this article is that school district taxpayers are entitled to a residents membership at no additional fee equivalent to a regular membership which entitles members to attend certain events free and at reduced rates such as music concerts and lectures. :) This benefit, in most circumstances, more than offsets the small charge on our tax bills. So sign up folks!
