Montauk Highway To Undergo Widening Near New Parrish Art Museum

Oct 5, 2011 11:04 AM

Preparations began last week for the widening of Montauk Highway at the entrance to the new Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill, work that is projected to take about six weeks, according to Terrie Sultan, museum director.

The road will be widened in order to create a center turning lane for traffic into and out of the site. A curb and sidewalk will also be added, as well as drainage and pavement markings, according to Eileen Peters, a spokeswoman for the New York State Department of Transportation, which issued a permit for the work to be done on the state highway. The permit expires on June 22, 2012, she said.

“The plan is to always maintain one travel lane in each direction,” Ms. Peters explained, noting that traffic may be stopped at times while workers move equipment.

The Parrish is paying for the work under its construction budget for the new facility, Ms. Sultan wrote in an email. She did not disclose the cost.

The building is expected to open to museum-goers next fall.

DeLalio-South Fork Asphalt, based in Southampton Village, is contracted to do the paving, while Nelson & Pope of Melville is doing inspection services.

The Parrish, which has run its museum on Jobs Lane in Southampton Village in a village-owned building for more than a century, broke ground on its new site in July 2010. The new 34,500-square-foot facility will, once completed, triple the museum’s current exhibition space. It was designed by the Swiss architectural firm Herzog and de Meuron.
