Friday Morning Blaze Destroys Water Mill Home; Homeowners Hope To Rebuild

Apr 26, 2011 6:47 PM

No other houses were in danger of catching fire, firefighters said. The sparks did ignite some nearby brush, however. “There was a small brush fire from the extension of the embers that was knocked down quickly,” Chief Rosko said.

Officials initially reported that there were no injuries from the fire, but Chief Ambrose said Friday afternoon that a firefighter from his department discovered later she had broken her wrist in a fall while extinguishing the brush fire. The injured firefighter was treated at Southampton Hospital and released soon after, he said. The chief would not disclose her name.

Three ambulances from the Southampton Volunteer Ambulance company also responded.

As for the Bassons, they have been busily canceling everything from their Long Island Power Authority to Cablevision services, Dr. Basson said, noting that they will construct a new home.

“We plan to rebuild,” Dr. Basson said. “We don’t want to leave this community.”

I am so proud of the local fire fighters. They do not get paid wages for what they do; it is all volunteer. They take many classes to keep up their proficiency and it's all volunteer. Why do they do this? Because it's the thing to do? I think it is because they want to give back to the community and they know it keeps down the taxes. From the beginning in the 1890's the men of the villages recognized the need to protect their homes and businesses. So they banded together. If, along the way after ...more

God bless all the firemen!! They've had a very busy week. 3 structure fires in 1 week. I don't remember there ever being 3 such fires within a week. Very strange??? Kudos to all fire departments that are there for us!! and Thank You!!

For one who was on the scene how do you know if it was 1800 sq ft or 2600 sq ft it was gone when you got there. Did you step out the foundation and do the math? It was a smaller house then Newsday made it out to be that's for sure! regardless of the size, Great Job by all the emergency responders. Thanks You!

God Bless our volunteer firefighters and emergency responders..they deserve everyones respect and a donation doesn't hurt..More importantly here on the East End, volunteers are needed to keep our firehouses and ambulances going. If you are able to give to your community in such a way, step up..We need you. Inquire at your local firehouse.

I wasn't being sarcastic about the photo with the fireman smoking a cigarette. You're right, I am not a fireman. When I saw the picture, i laughed because I just thought the picture was funny, that's all. Didn't mean to offend anyone so, if I did, I apologize for that.
