Vice President Biden visits Southampton over holiday weekend

Jun 1, 2010 5:32 PM

Vice President Joe Biden spent part of the Memorial Day holiday weekend in Southampton Village.

While the vice president was visiting, members of the Village Police Department’s Special Response Team and paramedics from the volunteer ambulance corps provided assistance to the Secret Service, according to Police Chief William Wilson. And during the times Mr. Biden was expected to arrive and depart the area, the Federal Aviation Administration instituted a no-fly zone covering 6 nautical miles around the home where the
vice president was staying, reportedly an estate on First Neck Lane.

Air traffic was banned below 3,000 feet from as far west as the middle of Shinnecock Bay to as far east as Mecox Bay from 2 to 4 p.m. on Friday and from 7 to 9:15 p.m. Sunday, according to the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association website.

The restrictions didn’t seem to hamper any of the other East End air traffic. Jim Brundige, the manager of the East Hampton Airport, said that Mr. Biden’s visit did not impact his facility at all over the weekend.

He explained that when the FAA issues no-fly zones, formally called “temporary flight
restrictions,” pilots are able to pass through if they file an instrument flight plan and receive clearance for it. The plan states where the pilots are headed and other information, Mr. Brundige said.

“It makes it a little bit more regulated for the pilots, which is how it should be,” he added.

Anthony Ceglio, the manager of Francis S. Gabreski Airport in Westhampton, said that the no-fly zone did not affect his facility either. And Todd Rome, the owner of the charter
flight company Blue Star Jets, also said that the restriction did not affect his Memorial Day weekend business. “We just take the water route,” he said. “We fly over the water instead of the land.”

Blue Star Jets travels in Gabreski, East Hampton and the helipad on Meadow Lane in Southampton Village.

Mr. Biden’s press secretary, James F. Carney, said the vice president was in town with his wife, Jill Biden, on a personal visit.

Chief Wilson said Mr. Biden visited a few local spots and took a walk or two during his stay.

This is at least the second time Mr. Biden has visited Southampton during his vice presidency. He was spotted in Southampton Village in October 2009.

Well everyone, I think that we have found a way to keep those annoying helicopters away….just have a dignitary in town. Thank you Mr. Vice President for the quiet that we do not normally get on a holiday weekend due to the helicopter traffic.

This is a day we are to honor the men and woman that served to protect this GREAT country.
But as we see NO ONE in the White House does the right thing

The President, spoke at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Illinois, Or is Arlington National Cemetery the only place that counts? Vice President Biden was at Arlington. George Bush Sr. Never participated in a memorial day service at Arlington...he was in Italy his first year in office and the rest he spent at his home in Maine. Funny, no one made a big deal about that.
By pstevens (406), Wilmington on Jun 1, 10 10:15 AM
The VP spoke at the ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery!
By LUVSH (28), Southampton on May 31, 10 6:13 PM
That should have been done by our so-called president.
Hope your glad to see how tax dollars are spent
By sjd (420), Westhampton Beach on May 31, 10 7:39 PM
Although I agree with you, unfortunately there have been many presidents that have skipped Memorial day at Arlington. G.W. Bush, Ronald Reagan among them.
By Draggerman (955), Southampton on May 31, 10 9:51 PM
Well maybe he should not be there since all he does is apologize for this GREAT nation we live in.
By sjd (420), Westhampton Beach on May 31, 10 10:56 PM
I hope he went past the Post Office and saw what a wonderful the job the Government is doing with the yard work………….. Maybe they should fence it in and get goats.
By mother of firefighter (18), Southampton on May 31, 10 6:14 PM
Great comment---Goats would work, but must be "hungary goats" since this property needs lots of work.
Just think about what it will be like when the Gov't gets it's hands on your
your "HEALTH CARE"!!!!
By EWM (9), southampton on May 31, 10 11:44 PM
You pulled that off of Wikimpidia and of course didnt include the part that they borrowed money from the fed to cover losses. The US postal service receives @ 96 million per year (granted a pitance) from Congress and is recognized as a GVT agency under title 39 section 101.1

So, by your logic, the President and VP shouldn't be allowed to go anywhere, ever, because it's a "waste of taxpayer dollars". And you honestly think there was a noticeable increase in traffic because of him? Get real.

We ARE at War and the President should have gone to Arlington, shame on him. Its no wonder he was met with torrential rains and had to evacuate the tiny mock ceremony his PR people set up in his hometown.

On the other hand maybe it is better he did not go since ALL he ever has done is apologize for this GREAT nation that we live in. Maybe a higher figure was giving him a message for what he has done by raining on him.
By sjd (420), Westhampton Beach on May 31, 10 10:55 PM
How many times are you going to say the same, silly thing ( "...apoligize for this GREAT nation...")? The president was at Abraham Lincoln NATIONAL CEMETARY today. That's a National Cemetary with the graves of our veterans, whose families rightly don't view their sccrifice as any less than those at Arlington. Go ahead and criticize BP, health care, marxism in your dining room etc., but spare us all your belittling of the sincerity of the observance of Memorial Day.

"zaz" Seems that you need to hear it till you get it. Since you mentioned health care lets not forget that this was the major push by Barry and his crew and when it was approved lets all so not forget that the VP said "This is a big ****en deal" and all this showed is what class they both have and if they did not have low class they would have any.Its not belittling its called the truth.
By sjd (420), Westhampton Beach on Jun 1, 10 11:38 PM
Its a shame, it seems, it does not matter what this President does. Someone will find a way to place a negative spin on it. President Bush Jr. spent a lot of time in Crawford Texas, no one was harping then. If our current President was Caucasian male named John Smith, instead of an Negro named Barrack Hussein Obama, something as simple as where and how he opted to observe Memorial day would barely receive a nod from the press. I know I'm going to get a lot of race card comments from some of you, ...more

Funny yet you are placing a negative spin on Bush. Can you imagine the negative spin if Bush were the president during this BP fiasco? I think considering the gravity of the situation and all of his other failures that Obama has gotten off easy so far. I think the race card has actually helped him

List of failures. I don't have time to write a novel. I can list his accomplishments. 1. The reversal on the stem cell research ban. 2.elimination of the f22 fighter jet program. All of this with control of the house and the senate. Great job.

On the day President Bush took office, the national debt stood at $5.727 trillion. When discussions began about the bank bailout (while Bush was still in office) the national debt was more than $9.849 trillion. That's a 71.9 percent increase on Mr. Bush's watch. Soooooo hmmmmm....

By cochise316 (58), southampton on Jun 1, 10 5:18 PM
I still cant figure out where you libs get your facts from. moveon.org? zfacts?? try the actual numbers from the us gov. There is no denying Bush rang up the bill but Obamas numbers are staggering. In Bush's last year of office the gross debt undeflated was 70.2% of GDP (it was 58 when he took office). In 2010 the projection under Obama is 98.1. These numbers do not include all the unfunded liabilities for entitlement progrms

n 2000, when President Clinton left office, the U.S. was in the black by $236 billion. At the time, number crunchers projected a surplus for at least 10 years.
But just two years later, we were in the red by $158 billion. The aftermath of 9/11 effectively froze the nation's economy. And President Bush enacted his first round of tax cuts.

By 2004, the deficit had more than doubled, to nearly $413 billion. The U.S. had invaded Iraq, and, economists point out, there was another round ...more

Razza, I dont think anyone is denying that Obama has the pedal to the metal on govenrment spending and if they did argue that fact, they would be foolish. In this thread on 2 seperate occassions (1 deleted post) SJD claimed that Bush hadn't raised the national debt by trillions which is false.

I like a good discussion but either SJD is totally misinformed, he's got his hard right blinders on and cant see anything else or hes a moron. IDK the answer, I'll go with a combination of all 3
By cochise316 (58), southampton on Jun 2, 10 4:12 PM

Well to start with the national debit will be 13 Tillion for the first time ever and Barry's figures are that he has increased the debit about 4.9 million a day. If you want to cut down the unemployment your answer is put people into the military. How about Barry doing what 3 other presidents have done and that is deport every ILLEGAL in this country?? Now you can look at what Hoover, Truman and Eisenhower all did because they all did it to make jobs for AMERICANS.

Razza, sjd - Spending is up under Obama because, among other things, (1) the size of government (and the corresponding debt) expanded astronomically under W, while W lowered taxes, resulting (surprise!) in a massive deficit that Obama inherited, and (2) the recession - fairly attributed to mistakes by the Clinton and W administrations - required immediate and massive stimulus spending, which, while costly, has (so far) avoided the first depression in over 80 years - a considerably more costly result. ...more
