Alessandrini Jr. improves on 2009 state tournament performance

Mar 2, 2010 11:13 AM

Southampton resident and St. Anthony’s High School junior Paul Alessandrini Jr. improved on his 2009 performance this past weekend at the New York State Wrestling Championships at the Times Union Center in Albany.

After losing his first match to Smithtown West’s Jake Smith in a 5-4 decision, Alessandrini Jr. (189 pounds) beat Adam Malone of Messena (Section X-St. Lawrence) in a 9-3 decision in the first round of the wrestlebacks. He followed that with a 10-3 loss to Mike McGrath of Kingston (Section IX-Orange, Sullivan, Ulster). McGrath went on to finish fourth in the state while Smith placed fifth. Alessandrini Jr. had lost both of his matches in last season’s tournament. In his opening round match, Alessandrini Jr. said Smith was stalling most of the match after getting out to a 4-1 lead. Alessandrini Jr. was awarded two stalling points but thought he should have been awarded more.

“He was backing up the whole last minute of the match,” Alessandrini said. “Had I won that match I thought I would have placed.”

All six place-winners in the 189-pound weight class are seniors and will be graduating in the spring.

“There aren’t going to be many kids returning, so I think I can do some serious damage as long as I put forth a good effort in the off-season,” Alessandrini Jr. said.
