Southampton Town plans forums on leaf collection policy

Feb 24, 2010 11:15 AM

The piles of brown, soggy leaves lumped on the side of many area roads will be the topic of two forums next month set up by Southampton Town Highway Superintendent Alex Gregor.

The first will be held on Wednesday, March 24, at the Hampton Bays Middle School cafetorium from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Another forum will be held Saturday, March 27, from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m., at The Bridge golf course on Millstone Road in Noyac.

The town currently asks residents to pile all their leaves and loose brush on the boundaries of their property in both the fall and spring, Mr. Gregor said. Then, Highway Department crews come by and pick up the leaves. But the system, which has been in place for more than 20 years, is not working, and the highway superintendent wants input from the community on how to change the cleanup procedures.

Mr. Gregor will be discussing how villages on the East End and other towns across Long Island handle leaf pickup. He is preparing a presentation and will answer questions from the audience during the forums.

Mr. Gregor noted that the spring cleanup will be completed under the old rules. By next fall, however, the superintendent hopes that the procedure will have changed.

Bagging works and the leaves aren't blowing all over. The neighborhood are already divided up. Give each group a specific day each week that bags will be collected. It doesn't take as long to pick up the bags as it does to vacuum and rake. This is done in many townships on Long Island and they don't have the mess we have.

I don't see why are forum is needed. Pick up the leaves in a timely fashion and the problem is solved.
