A winter storm warning the National Weather Service issued for the East End on Tuesday has now been upgraded to a blizzard warning.

Snow will continue throughout the day Wednesday and may mix with rain and sleet at times, according to the weather service. Forecasters are predicting snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour.

“By the time snow ends tonight, total accumulations of 8 to 13 inches can be expected,” the forecast stated.

Northeast winds will become quite strong by the afternoon and gusts of 35 to 40 miles per hour will cause snow drifts and may cause power outages, the weather service warns. The winds will turn to the north by Wednesday night.

The weather service emphasized that the blizzard will lead to whiteout conditions while driving, making traveling extremely dangerous. “If you must travel, have a winter survival kit with you,” the forecast stated. “If you get stranded, stay with your vehicle.”

The blizzard warning is in effect until 6 a.m. Thursday.
