Kabot gets enough signatures to force a primary

Jul 16, 2009 5:26 PM

After the Southampton Town Republican Committee booted her off the ticket at its convention in May, Southampton Town Supervisor Linda Kabot vowed to fight for her party’s nomination as she did, successfully, in 2007.

On Thursday, Ms. Kabot made it official, filing a petition with the Suffolk County Board of Elections to seek a primary against Republican nominee Jim Malone, who is also the current chairman of the town’s Conservative Party.

As of Thursday, the deadline for filing petitions, Ms. Kabot had gathered and filed some 850 names, more than the 500 needed to run in the primary this September. The 300-plus cushion, Ms. Kabot said, is in case the Board of Elections invalidates some of the signatures, which must be those of Southampton Town residents who are registered GOP voters.

Either Ms. Kabot or Mr. Malone will be on the Republican line against Democratic nominee Anna Throne-Holst in the general election in November.

Ms. Kabot also collected about 100 Independence Party signatures in an effort to gain that party’s nod in a primary should the committee nominate another candidate. However, if Ms. Kabot does not get the Independence nomination, she would need what is referred to as a “Wilson-Pakula” from the party’s county chairman, Frank MacKay. The Wilson-Pakula Act of 1947, sponsored by New York State lawmakers Assemblyman Malcom Wilson and Senator Irwin Pakula, allows a political party to nominate for public office a candidate not registered with that party.

The Independence Party has not yet chosen its nominee for town supervisor.

And now we wait for Stinchi & the GOP to file a challenge to the signatures.

Should be fun to watch. Hopefully her signatures are not a complete fraud as her time in office has been..........

Thank you, Linda and the Republican party for splitting the vote! This means we'll finally be rid of both of you.

Here is a fitting quote:
"It's our tendency to approach every problem as if it were a fight between two sides. We see it in headlines that are always using metaphors for war. It's a general atmosphere of animosity and contention that has taken over our public discourse." - Deborah Tannen, Georgetown University.

We need a genuine leader; someone who will fight not just for political survival, but for the people of Southampton.

I also signed for Linda, what a time consuming task with all those who signed your petitions. Thanks for sharing your stories about all those who signed inviting you into their homes telling you what a great job you are doing for the people. You would have gotten twice the amount of signatures had you not spent so much time with all the voters of SH. Thanks for all your hard work! You have my vote.
