Anti-illegal immigration protester reports car window smashed, sign stolen

Apr 15, 2009 11:19 AM

An anti-illegal immigration protester often seen outside the Southampton Village 7-Eleven told Village Police on Tuesday that someone smashed his SUV’s window and stole one of his protest signs.

Tom Wedell, 49, of East Moriches said he was protesting on Aldrich Lane, out of sight of his vehicle, when the window was smashed. He reported it shortly after noon and said it must have happened within the prior hour. The sign, which he said read “Deport Illegals,” had been leaning against the SUV, which was parked in the South Fork Realty parking lot next to the 7-Eleven, according to Mr. Wedell.

As Mr. Wedell was removing broken bits of glass from the window frame Tuesday, he recounted other occasions when his vehicle has been vandalized. “I’ve been harassed and intimidated here many times,” he said. Last week, someone broke off the side-view mirrors on his SUV, and his tires have been slashed, he said.

Mr. Wedell said someone once poured three gallons of anti-freeze into the cab of his SUV, ruining his clothes and papers. “I was smelling anti-freeze for a year in my truck,” he said.

He said his SUV is targeted because people disagree with him and don’t like him protesting outside the 7-Eleven.

“If they think they can break my mirrors and smash my windows and stop me from coming, they’ve got another thing coming,” he said. “This is not gonna stop. It just makes my resolve that much more firm.”

“I don’t get paid to be out here,” he later added. “This is my time and effort for my country. And if they don’t like it, they can go to hell.”

Real mature...not making themselves very sympathetic to the rest of us who agree with him. At least what he does is legal and constitutional. More power to Freedom of Speech.

Tom Wedell : Why risk this happening to you because of your protests ? The powers that be that allow these illegal aliens here won't be swayed. It seems most of the Sheeple around have no problems with illegal aliens.

I can't condone vandalism, but I have to admit I am unable to wipe a GIANT smile off my face at the thought of this.

I love this quote: “I’ve been harassed and intimidated here many times." I have personally witnessed Tom Wedell intimidating, confronting and mocking a group of Latino men one morning. These men did nothing to him.

This man spouts such hatred, racism and anger each morning, what does he expect, roses and love letters? What come around goes around Mr. Wedell, ...more

This is America. The great thing about this country is this: Although I don't support Mr. Wedell, I support his right to voice his opinion. This is America. We have a right to free speech. We have the right to assemble (Hague v. CIO, 307 U.S. 496 (1939)). The first amendment guarantees the right to assemble for the "communication of views on national questions" and for "disseminating information." GOD BLESS AMERICA.

Just think, whenever someone enters the Village of Southampton from 27 they are greeted by Mr. Wendell. It is like having the embodiment of hate and ignorance waving welcome to all who enter. They should not have broken his window and stolen his sign, but . . . HAH!
By peoplefirst (787), Southampton on Apr 14, 09 7:26 PM
no problem tom... the union that pays your 50,000 "salary" to stand on a corner can just write you a check for the damage... i'm sure they can spare some money from their no-cut, early-retirement contracts - which are far more damaging to the economy than any poor immigrant who actually wants to work for a living.
By littleplains (305), olde england on Apr 14, 09 11:07 PM
I don't get it, Tom you were a nice guy with a thriving business and dont tell me that you didn't hire any illegals to tear down roofs?! Stop wasting your time and go back to work.

Those of you that are so quick to condone the damage that was done to this man's property should be ashamed. Please list the other crimes that you are willing to condone. It shouldn't matter what Tom's message is, only that in this country he has the right to state it. If we allow illegal aliens to break the laws of this land without recourse, what other laws should we be able to ignore. Should we be able to just move into someone's house because we think they have a better one than us? Should we ...more

Frankly, I think the immigrants are working a lot harder for their living than Tom Wedell!! What makes him so self-righteous??!!! I have seen him out there...It seems like he has his own issues, looks very arrogant.

These immigrants will do any work to survive. And if you notice, they are hard working, talented and polite! Can't say that for many of citizens anymore!!

Although the only thing I must say is that his car should not be vandalized although I can't be a hypocrate and say that I feel one bit sorry for this guy, people like him promote all the blind hatred created on this community, just look at how quick everyone is to come to the conclussion that it was and "illegal". And these are the same people that claim that have to racism or hatred, THIS IS AMERICA A COUNTRY OF IMMIGRANTS
By HBresident (24), Hampton Bays on Apr 15, 09 9:54 AM
well whats new...way to go illegals, this is a small crime for them. why does everyone turn their backs and condone this sort of activity just because they are illegal. Regardless, people have their right to free speech and the ability to protest. How would eveyone like southampton to turn into tijuana? They are putting a huge drain on they system and I have the numbers. Illegals should be deported before more crimes are committed.

Let's see, what we are talking about - illegal immigrants or legal immigrants? That's the REAL issue. Our elected leaders are not taking care of business with the problem of immigration as a whole. If a person arrives in this country illegally, they should be deported - no excuses! But if they come here abiding by our immigration laws, then all power to them. Most of us came here under the rules - through Ellis Island - worked hard and brought credit to our new country. So, take your frustrations ...more

HBResident, we are also a country of laws. What Tom Weddell is doing is not illegal. Just because you don't agree does not mean he should stop. Is assault ok? Where does it stop? Someday I may not like where you worship or work, will I be able to damage your property? He has every right to protest...Boston Tea Party sound familiar? It's our right as Americans . The law is already in our favor we don't need to change them. We do need to make the gov't enforce them.

By dogfacejones (81), Southampton on Apr 16, 09 11:17 AM
Mr. Jones, you don't have to tell if they are illegal just by looking at them. Just look at their I-9's or green card, or social security card. If they don't have one, don't hire them!

Someone asked on here what the cost to deport Illegals would be and I happen to have these figures.
$64 Billion a year, what would it cost to have a comprehensive immigration reform ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. In fact it will contribute about $63 Billion a year by 2012 so all of you that come here and complain about your tax dollar and making that the issue, well think about it that would solve your problem now wouldnt' it if thats the issue with you?

HBresident, you are right, maybe it was the aiders and abettors who broke the window and stole the sign. I agree it would be worthwhile to deport the illegal alien invaders. Since 1987 they have cost the citizens of this Nation 1 trillion dollars. Every year an additoinal 50 billion. WAKE UP AMERICA! NO AMNESTY-DEPORT NOW!
By Melchizeder (3), Hampton Bays on Apr 17, 09 10:58 AM
I suggest you learn a little before you look even more stupid, that is the problem with our society, yet when I think about it it shouldn't surprise anyone since this area was basically run by the Klan up to just a few decades so this sort of fear of acceptance should not really be that surprising.
Melchizer and I'm just sure you are gonna do the jobs they do, cause last time I looked i didn't see too many non-latinos in construction, masonery and Landscaping.
By HBresident (24), Hampton Bays on Apr 17, 09 3:32 PM
Also I guess you misunderstood my post, a comprehensive immigration reform is a path to legalization for those who are here undocumented (I think the word Illegal is used to create a negative ambiance) who otherwise have no way of doing so, but I must apologyze because maybe I wasn't clear or it just goes to show the type of intelligence of these anti-immigration protesters.
By HBresident (24), Hampton Bays on Apr 17, 09 3:41 PM
HBresident, by resorting to name calling you prove your lack of ability for intelligent debate also who in actuality are the real racist haters. Your lack of understanding of the difference between illegal aliens and immigrants is noteworthy. Do not seek to challenge the truth as I dispense it. You are not up to the task. The US stands to gain a lot more from giving a path to citizenship to these undocumented people than to start rounding them up and deporting them. These illegals should be rounded up and shipped off Sheriff Joe Arpaio style, and NY State should write its own version of Arizona SB 1070.
