ORIGINAL STORY

Connecticut police have arrested a Southampton man on Thursday after they say he boarded the Cross Sound Ferry intending to hurt a family member living in Massachusetts.

Shawn L. Douglas, 42, was arrested at 4:07 p.m. by New London Police when the ferry, which left from Orient Point in Southold earlier that day, docked at the New London port. According to a press release, the New London Police Department received a call from New York State Police saying that Mr. Douglas was wanted in connection to a firearm incident in Southampton earlier that day.

According to police, Mr. Douglas threatened to kill an unidentified person in New York and then notified family that he was heading to Massachusetts to kill a family member, before fleeing the scene. Upon docking, New London Police approached and detained Mr. Douglas, who was carrying a loaded Mac-10 pistol.

Mr. Douglas was charged with carrying a pistol without a permit, breach of peace, and possession of marijuana.

On Friday afternoon, New York State Police said the case is being reviewed by the District Attorney’s Office, and that charges are pending. More information was not immediately available.

Article updated. Nice police work to prevent a possible tragedy over the long weekend.

The school district may have further explaining to do . . .
By PBR (4956), Southampton on May 23, 14 6:02 PM
What do they need to explain further? He passed a back round check was a correction officer before working for the school so he must have been pretty well scrutinized how can they possibly predict that this man was going to go off the deep end?

school district did everything right-pbr just wants to start something that isn't there

You personally know that the school district has no further investigation to do, or comments to make, about clues missed recently?

Just sweep this under the carpet?

What if the suspect's bad motives had been directed toward the Southampton school community?

Would responsible inquiring minds want to know more?

Are you 100% sure this is a situation of "something that isn't there?"
By PBR (4956), Southampton on May 24, 14 6:40 AM
Do you have specifics to offer or are you just bored and playing armchair detective? Some times the situation is what it is, nothing more. The guy flipped. No one but he and his family knows what made him do so. I'm sure that will change as the case unfolds. It just so happens he was a Part-time security guard with Southampton School District.

As you say pstevens,

"I'm sure that will change as the case unfolds."

Thank you for making my point.

Lots of unanswered questions IMO (please note the question marks above, which were only in response to the blanket assertions made by westhamptonboy ["something that isn't there"] and Crankpants ["what do they need to explain further"] ).
By PBR (4956), Southampton on May 24, 14 11:57 AM
PS pstevens, why is it necessary to attack a person asking questions on a public forum?

"are you just bored and playing armchair detective?"
By PBR (4956), Southampton on May 24, 14 12:03 PM
IMO, pbr has made some very valid points but are there more important questions that need asking?

Why didn't the southampton school district use the counsel of it's magic 8-ball when hiring this man? Why didn't they use their time machine?

Why did god invent guns?

How was Mr Douglas foolish enough to threaten someone and think they wouldn't call the police?

FWIW I think pbr is right on the money here, this sounds nefarious.

Keep digging pbr, you are ...more

Sarcasm noted. Are you saying there are NO further questions to be asked? Further inquiry it not needed about clues the school district might have missed recently?

Thank you. Still not sure why the motivations of any poster here are relevant to the discussion (bored, arm chair detective), especially when they appear judgmental . . .

The weapon could not possibly be a MAC-10. According to Wikipedia, that is a fully automatic machine gun! If that were the case, there would be more serious charges than possessing a pistol without a permit.

Really unbelievable. Thanks, Shawn, for being such a great example for our high school kids. I don't even want to imagine the fine lessons you must have taught during your four year tenure as "security" for us. Drugs, guns, violence. All the best. Thanks!

This is a prime example of social media, everyone has their own thoughts and opinions, if you weren't their stop the speculation let the law handle it.
