A nearly 2-mile stretch of County Road 39 in Tuckahoe will be closed on Wednesday night while workers build a pedestrian bridge across the road in preparation for next month's U.S. Open golf championship at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club.

The bridge, which Southampton Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman estimates will be about 16 feet wide, will help move pedestrian traffic from a platform being constructed by the Long Island Rail Road on the tracks near Stony Brook Southampton to the golf club.

County Road 39 will be closed in Tuckahoe between Shrubland Road and Tuckahoe Lane for eight hours, beginning at 9 p.m. on Wednesday night and reopening at 5 a.m. on Thursday morning.

During the closure, residents in the neighborhood between Greenfield Road and St. Andrews Road in Tuckahoe will be let through to access their homes with proof of address, according to Southampton Town officials.

Detour signs will be posted on either side of the road closure.
