UPDATE: Southampton School Board Does Not Plan To Revisit Columbus Holiday Name Change At Next Meeting

Jan 31, 2017 3:10 PM

UPDATE: Tuesday 12:45 p.m.

A representative for Syntax Communication Group, a public relations company in Bohemia that works for the district, said on Tuesday that the Board of Education will not be discussing the Columbus Day name change at its upcoming meeting in February.

During a call with Dr. Dyno immediately following the communication, he credited the error to a miscommunication.

The Syntax representative said that the agenda shows that the board plans to vote to adopt the 2017/18 school calendar, which does not mention “Columbus Day.” Instead, the calendar displays “No School.” The discussion on the controversial day will be discussed, accordinging to the Syntax representative, at an undetermined date.

Southampton School Board members will discuss how they intend to address the “Columbus Day question” when they meet on Tuesday, February 7, to finalize the 2017-18 academic calendar.A proposal to change the name of Columbus Day to “Indigenous Day” was first pitched to school districts officials in 2015 when a group of seventh-graders studying Christopher Columbus wrote letters to the School Board asking for a change in the holiday’s name. The students even participated in a mock trial in which Columbus was found guilty of murdering thousands of indigenous people; they also determined that the explorer was the first European to land in South America, not North America.

When board members set up the 2016-17 school calendar, they postponed any decision on the potential name change after opponents raised concerns. Instead, the board adopted a generic calendar for the current school year, one for planning purposes that simply designated which days of the year school would be in session. No label was added to the holiday.

At the same time, board members announced that they would decide by this past August if they are going to move forward with changing the name of Columbus Day to Indigenous Day. A decision was never made, however.

The discussion is on the agenda for the next board meeting, at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 7, in the music room of the Southampton Intermediate School on Leland Lane.

Remember the South Park non-offensive Christmas episode? Doesn't seem like much of a stretch anymore.

Get real Southampton School Board... You have a few liberal school teachers that are influencing our children with their thoughts that do no conform with the thoughts of our tax payers.
The school board has to dictate what is taught in our schools. I would like a Polish holiday, no slaves etc...
One liberal teacher thoughts are put on your children...

There is nothing "liberal" about uevoking an honor undue a man who committed genocide.

The Taino would probably agree, if you could find one...

The only people in favor of it are the ones who learned the pop culture version of history.

Those of us who know what actually happened consider a holiday in honor of this man to be a travesty due to the atrocities he committed.

He personally murdered more people than Hitler. The German dictator didn't dirty his own hands.

Seriously...just cancel the holiday and hold a school day in it's place. As it is, there are only 165 INSTRUCTIONAL DAYS in the 2016/2017 year in our High School...yes, that's right, pull out the calendar and count 'em up. Most kids were off last week for mid terms, with many students only appearing for a couple of exams all week because many teachers gave their mid terms in class (as they should). From the 165 instructional days, take away the delayed openings for an inch or more of snow, and ...more

This also doesn't include the endless "instructional time" watching movies, which includes, but is not limited to, the Caitlin Jenner interview.

If you're not black or brown, you are vilified by the leftist PC police. You can do nothing right, your history is shameful, you need to suffer for your past wrongs, and apologize endlessly if you are white.

I hear they're cutting a 300k check to Christopher Columbus to make him disappear.

Columbus did not discover America. Makes zero sense for a school to perpetuate the falsehood.

And the "Indians" didn't sprout out of the ground, they aren't indigenous. They wandered across the frozen straight linking America to Eurasia. They spent centuries conquering, slaughtering, and enslaving each other. Torture and vicious brutality were a common trait amongst tribes, with the warrior, conquering tribes (Commanche, Apache, Mohawk) preying on agrarian tribes.

Nothing noble about it. Indians weren't a monolithic bloc. Why are we supposed to shed tears over a stronger, more intelligent ...more

"....when a group of seventh-graders studying Christopher Columbus wrote letters to the School Board asking for a change in the holiday’s name."

When our politicians and educators start seriously taking advice from 7th graders, is that is sign that we, as adults are in deep trouble? Just askin' :)
