Southampton Board Of Education Postpones Making Decision About Columbus Day Holiday

Jul 27, 2016 11:34 AM

The Southampton Board of Education does not plan to make changes to include—or single out for exclusion—Columbus Day on the 2016-17 school year calendar anytime soon.

The district had been asked to change the name of the holiday to “Indigenous Day,” a request made by students that was supported by members of the Shinnecock Indian Nation. In March, the School Board adopted a generic calendar that designates only the days when school is in session, putting off making a decision on Columbus Day until August, it said at the time.

But on Tuesday the board opted to leave the issue alone for the time being, saying they want to continue the conversation through Columbus Day in 2017 before setting a policy going forward.

Also on Tuesday, the School Board voted to raise the rate of pay for clerical substitutes from $16.26 to $18.75 per hour for the first 30 days of work, and to $19.25 per hour after that. The district has had problems finding substitutes in all areas, in part because of the commute, so the board is looking into ways to bring in more local people.

The board also approved spending as much as $21,120 to repair masonry at the Southampton Elementary School. A portion of the concrete crown molding near the roof line of the gym is crumbling, and a safety net is in place to prevent anything from falling and hitting anyone.

The money for the project will come from a capital reserve fund that can be used only for extraordinary repairs, and the amount taken must be put back into the account within two years.

WOW, 20 percent raise? Would like that on my pension. Is it even taught in schools?
Should be brought up to community vote. Don't think the board is voting for the TAXPAYERS....

Amazing that these bureaucratic, empty suits focus on something as insignificant as a school holiday when their responsible for hiring a revolving door of miscreants who are supposed to be teaching our kids,

Can't we all just SHARE the day and move along?
Aren't there SO many other BIGGER issues facing our community, county, and Nation?
Legalize marijuana and let's all smoke the Peace Pipe.
