UPDATE: Wednesday, 8:30 a.m.

County Road 39 reopened to traffic shortly after 8 a.m. on Wednesday, though delays are still significant, according to Southampton Fire Department 1st Assistant Chief Chris Brenner.

The accident was first reported to officials at 6:03 a.m. Upon arriving on the scene, the fire department found the tractor trailer was on top of a Porsche with the driver trapped inside of the smaller vehicle. After a half hour, firefighters were able to extricate the driver from the car with non life threatening injuries. He was transported to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center by the Southampton Volunteer Ambulance, according to Mr. Brenner. The driver of the tractor was not injured.

It is unclear at this time what caused the accident, though Mr. Brenner said both drivers were incredibly lucky.

The Southampton Fire Department, along with the Southampton Town Police were in charge on the scene. The Hampton Bays, North Sea and Bridgehampton fire departments also responded to the scene to provide fire police assistance.

Original Story

County Road 39 was closed in both directions during Wednesday morning’s rush hour following an accident involving a tractor trailer .

The road was expected to remain closed from Hill Station Road to Tuckahoe Road until after sometime 8 a.m. while emergency crews cleared the accident scene, according to Southampton Town Police, who were unsure what time the accident was called in on Wednesday.

According to police, the tractor trailer and a car collided on the road and were stuck together, making it difficult to clear the scene. Police were unsure if anyone was taken to the hospital as a result of the accident, but said there were no fatalities.

No other details were immediately available.

I'm not saying speed was a factor in this accident, but it would be nice to see the most travelled road in town patrolled by law enforcement once in awhile. The only time I ever see police checking CR39 by radar is at night and on the East bound side near Dunkin' Donuts. There are have been major accidents on this road EVERY week lately. Clearly we have a problem that has needed to be addressed for a long time. What can the residents do about this? It would be nice to address the town with a group ...more

I think the problem with enforcing the speed limit is that there is nowhere to pull someone over on CR39 without blocking traffic. Also the Hill Station Rd. intersection appears to be where a majority of the accidents occur. Most likely from people trying to merge onto CR39. The traffic from the Sunrise is still averaging 50+mph . A light there would help but would add to the congestion. I offer no solution as I believe there is none.

I agree. Quogue Village police did a great job of getting there point across on Montauk Highway. Everyone know do not exceed 40 mph or you could get pulled over. The town should do the same on 39.

Why not just employ retired Gestapo agents?

Golden Boy has it exactly right. The Town police should do a better job of enforcement on CR 39, especially during the morning rush. Can you hear us Jay.

you do not have to issue tickets to slow traffic down, have a police presence on that stretch of road and if legal some speed cameras and some speed signs indicating the speed you are travelling at.....ticket ticket and ticket if safe.OFFER QUOGUE VILLAGE POLICE SOME OVERTIME THEY WILL SLOW IT DOWN,TINTED WINDOWS CROSSING YELLOW LINE what ever it takes.

Last Wed. a truck flipped on a straight away and this Wed. a Porsche ends up totally underneath a flat bed. Another week, another child airlifted. Cty Rd 39 has become a mismanaged hazard. Driver's are ultimately responsible, but there has got to be civic engineers and experts who can devise a strategy to remedy what must be issues with the roadway....not to mention issues with the speed of the drivers on said roadway. How many deaths and injuries are required before the county addresses the expensive ...more

Sadly the speed of through traffic is more important than safety. The minor expense of grooving rumble strips to separate lanes would reduce accidents by 80 percent. Stats from NYS study. Just do it!

This Road is a disgrace and all of us who live in Tuckahoe travel this nightmare everyday and pray that people will SLOW DOWN on this road. I have NEVER seen a patrol car pull anyone over for speeding in ages. I see People all the time driving on this road with a cell phone glued to their ear. Enough already. Please slow down.

Don't blame the road blame the drivers. I travel the road, and see texting, phoning, trucks parked in the center lane in front of Southampton Brick, and tile. It's a very busy road, and the only way too fix it is too take out the railroad, and build an expressway to Montauk..

That is a great idea. Not sure if the LIRR right of way is wide enough. Worth looking into. The LIRR might have something to say about that though. LOL

Why are all of you assuming that speed is the problem? Better driving with people actually paying attention would be a good start. More rules and enforcement, not.

CR 39 is a s**tshow. I drive it every day and dread it. Some a**hole had to lock em up today as we stopped for the light at Tuckahoe east bound. It's a wonder there aren't more accidents. How do we get the cops to do their jobs? As I said before, ENOUGH ALREADY. Thanks

I like the idea of a toll booth in the East bound lane...that'll slow em down a lil ... maybe even deter them , hence leaving more jobs available for the local ppl!!!

This was such a funny concept - widen the road and expect people to pay attention to a slower speed limit.... They could forget that idea when they thought of it. No way for the cops to enforce there - that's why they don't do so. They would have to have a dedicated task force just for that section of road. Since people are not obeying the speed limits - what about deputizing a local unit of retired persons who would love to hand out tickets to people who don't care about safety, who drive inebriated, ...more
