Southampton Village Police Chief Passes Exam

May 23, 2012 10:21 AM

Southampton Village Police Chief Thomas Cummings, who was provisionally appointed as his department’s top cop nearly one year ago, has aced the Civil Service police chief’s examination, bringing him one step closer to securing his position as the department’s permanent chief.

The chief will now enter a six-month probationary period, during which the Village Board will evaluate his performance, though Village Mayor Mark Epley said this week he envisions him as the permanent chief.

Chief Cummings scored a 94 on the test, where the passing grade is 70. He was the only officer from his department to take the exam this year, which is offered just once a year and was administered on March 3. Results were released just last week.

He had passed the test twice before, in 2005 and 2006, scoring a high of 94.5 in 2005. He had to retake the exam this year because those results had expired.

“I’m happy I passed the test,” Chief Cummings wrote in an email. “I have now and have had a lot on my plate this past year as chief and making time to prepare adequately for the test was difficult “All in all, I’m happy to have the test behind me with summer here so I can focus on what we need to do in the police department going forward to have a safe summer here in the village.”

Chief Cummings was sworn in to his post on June 10, 2011, the day after the Village Board selected him by a 3-2 vote to fill the vacancy created when former Village Police Chief William Wilson Jr. left to lead the Southampton Town Police Department.

The last time Southampton Village appointed a provisional chief, Lars King in 2005, his ascent to the permanent chief’s post was undercut when he failed the chief’s test a month after taking over the department command. He scored a 69 on that test, one point shy of passing. He passed the test the following year, but was bumped back to the captain’s slot when the Village Board appointed then-Lieutenant Wilson to the top spot.
