Search Continues For Suspects After Shooting Injures Two On Shinnecock Reservation

Jun 17, 2015 10:56 AM

No arrests have been made as of Wednesday, two days after an early morning shooting on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation left two people with non-life-threatening injuries.

State Police, who are handling the investigation, said they are searching for multiple suspects but declined to say how many or to offer a possible motive for the crime.

Officers at the barracks in Riverside were contacted by officials at Southampton Hospital at around 12:45 a.m. Monday regarding two gunshot victims seeking medical care there. When police arrived, the two individuals told them that they were shot on the reservation after an altercation that took place at a memorial service.

The two suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police said. One of the victims was subsequently flown to Stony Brook University Hospital for further treatment.

The two victims were both local residents, police said, although not members of the tribe. They declined to offer any additional information about the victims, including their age and gender.

State Police also would not provide any additional information beyond what was offered in the statement, including where on the reservation the shooting took place and if they have any leads. The incident is still under investigation and State Police are asking anyone with information to call (631) 208-9002. All calls will be kept confidential, police said.

Beverly Jensen, a representative for the tribe, said Tuesday that “tribal officials are working with State Police,” although she would not provide further comment.

On Monday, Southampton Village Police Detective Sergeant Herman Lamison said his department sent out three cars to patrol the area near Southampton Hospital for the remainder of the night after the victims arrived, at the request of the facility. The cars patrolled the immediate perimeter of the hospital, as well as further into Southampton Village.

“We were called just to assist and maintain order at the hospital,” Det. Sgt. Lamison said.

Was the memorial for the accident a year ago where a car crashed while speeding into the Res, killing most of the occupants? Way to pay tribute - by shooting each other. Disgraceful.
