Tuckahoe Names Former Longwood Administrator As Interim Superintendent

Jun 10, 2015 10:59 AM

The Tuckahoe School District has appointed former Longwood Central School District Superintendent Dr. Allan Gerstenlauer as its interim superintendent after the departure of Chris Dyer at the end of this school year.

The three-member School Board appointed Mr. Gerstenlauer on Monday night after unanimously accepting Mr. Dyer’s resignation. According to Mr. Dyer, Mr. Gerstenlauer has been awarded a contract through October 31 while the district conducts a search for a permanent superintendent with the help of the Eastern Suffolk Board of Cooperative Education Services. Dr. Gerstenlauer will receive $800 for each day he is employed by the district.

Dr. Gerstenlauer served as superintendent of the Longwood District from 2005 to 2011, but worked in the district in many administrative and teaching capacities beforehand, starting in the 1970s as a social studies teacher.

A Shelter Island resident, Dr. Gerstenlauer has spent the last several months working as an interim assistant superintendent in the Longwood district. He said that he is looking forward to helping Tuckahoe through this transition period between leaders. His main priority, he said, is to make sure that programs and initiatives run smoothly throughout his time in the one-school district.

“I feel my main goal is to help people through the transition period and, in particular, to ensure that there is no interruption in the opportunities for services that the district provides its students,” Dr. Gerstenlauer said in a phone interview on Tuesday. “The second priority is to assist in any way that I can in the search for the new successor to Mr. Dyer. That will be a very difficult task for the board of trustees, and I am obviously there to assist them in any way that I can.”

The district also finalized the departure of Mr. Dyer on Monday. In April, Mr. Dyer announced he would be leaving the district to become superintendent of the Marion Independent School District in Iowa.

“Chris, you have been a great guiding force for us the last four or five years you have been here,” Board President Bob Grisnik said. “You did a great job. You did a fantastic job for this school district, and we really appreciate the guidance that you have given us, the leadership you have shown us, and the path you have taken us down. I think we are a better school district now than we were when you got here.”

This is a huge waste of money they don't have. I can't believe the taxpayers are happy.

The people in Tuckahoe think money grows on trees. They cant figure out they have a board member that loves spending other peoples money. What a joke.

$800 a day as summer vacation starts. Funny thing is if he didn't show up for a week, nobody would miss him. Great job if you can get it. I can't figure out how taxes go up and the district is bankrupt.

Is the position of Superintendent even necessary? Can someone please define his duties are and why this justifies such an outrageous salary? Thank God the merger between Southampton and Tuckahoe was shot down both times!
