Sagaponack School

Students were busy throughout November and December with holiday events, academics, physical education activities and field trips.

Parents and grandparents hosted holiday craft sessions and read holiday stories to the students. Among the crafts were ornaments made of clay, painting pottery and decorating pinecone trees. Families also contributed to the Giving Tree to help local families during this holiday season.

On November 27, a representative from the Cornell Cooperative visited the school to teach a science lesson. The children learned about nature at night and the animals that are nocturnal.

The students in Ms. Lombardo’s kindergarten and first grade classes have been learning about inventive spelling, writing and illustrating. In Mr. Scammell’s second and third grade classes, the students are presenting their animal slide shows to their classmates.

Swimming sessions have begun at the East Hampton YMCA. Students participate in swim classes each Friday in December as part of our winter gym program. Everyone is enjoying the pool and learning different techniques to help them become better swimmers.

On December 12, students joined their pen pals from the New Suffolk School for a performance of Rainbow Fish at the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center.

The winter concert was December 18. Music teacher Abby Fleming prepared the students for a wonderful concert of songs such as “The 12 Days of Christmas,” “Hanukkah,” “Up on the Housetop” and “Must be Santa.” Refreshments were served after the performance and family and friends wrote lovely messages to our students on the white boards.

Looking ahead, ice skating lessons start after the winter recess at the Buckskill Winter Club in East Hampton. Parents will be invited to join us for the last session on January 25.
