Police: North Haven Man Arrested After 13-Year-Old Child Reports Drug Use

Apr 30, 2019 3:06 PM

A North Haven man was arrested by Southampton Town Police on Sunday after a teenage child in the house called police to report that he was doing drugs.

Lieutenant James Kiernan, who responded to the house on Ferry Road on Sunday afternoon, said that Stephen Scala, 50, had locked himself in a bedroom and continued using drugs after police arrived. Guns also were reported to have been in the house, but police said no guns were found in the bedroom.

After nearly an hour, Mr. Scala “peacefully surrendered,” and it was discovered that he was in the possession of and using crack cocaine, “and possibly other drugs,” according to Lt. Kiernan.

He added that Mr. Scala was charged with endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor, and was transported to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital for treatment.

Police immediately contacted the child’s mother.

Sergeant Carl Schottenhamel said the incident was reported at 2:38 p.m. to Southampton Town Police, noting that about 12 officers responded to the scene, in addition to state troopers. He added that no one was injured.

Witnesses described seeing a white police van and at least one armed officer as well as a large number of police cars just north of the Route 114 traffic circle in the early afternoon.

The incident was resolved at approximately 5 p.m., according to Southampton Town Police.
