UPDATE: LIPA Crews Working To Restore Power To Long Wharf In Sag Harbor

Aug 23, 2013 9:48 AM

UPDATE: 4:30 p.m.

Mark Gross, a spokesman for LIPA, said the delay in restoring power was due to the size and location of the transformer that blew. Mr. Gross said LIPA crews have supplied temporary generation means for the customers affected and should have power up “very shortly.”

“It was an old ground-mount transformer,” explained Mr. Gross, as opposed to smaller transformers that are often up on utility poles. “Because of the size and location, it takes longer to replace the transformer and make sure we do any proper environmental cleanup work necessary.”

UPDATE: 12:15 p.m.

Long Island Power Authority representatives have been unavailable for comment all morning, but their website has been updated to reflect a new estimated time for the power to be restored — 4 p.m.

Linda David, a receptionist at Salon Xavier, said that as of noon, the Long Wharf and Bay Street businesses were still without power and shop employees were being told that power would be restored “late tonight.” She relayed that “it looks like they are getting ready to install the new generator now though, so hopefully it’ll be sooner than that.”

Original Story:

Electric power to Long Wharf in Sag Harbor and two adjacent Bay Street businesses was out on Wednesday and Thursday due to a blown transformer, sending business owners scrambling for generators.

The power went out at about 3 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, according to Tracy Mitchell, the executive director of the Bay Street Theatre, and the Long Island Power Authority website estimates that the five customers without power would remain that way until 11 a.m.

Ms. Mitchell said the theater was trying to acquire a generator, and that Thursday night’s show would go on as scheduled—a performance of “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” was canceled on Wednesday night. Officials said that anyone needing to reschedule due to the cancellation should call the box office at 725-9500.

Linda David, a receptionist at Salon Xavier, one of the two Bay Street businesses without power, the other being the Sag Harbor Gym, said the salon was still without power as of 10:15 a.m., but was utilizing a generator.

“We’re still carrying on, all plugged into extension cords, hoping the power comes back on at noon like they told us,” she said.

If your business were affected, would you consider it breaking news, especially if the theater performances at Bay Street are affected?

What a question . . .

It appears that this job has not been completed, as a huge generator is running outside Bay Street Theater.

More environmental clean-up this morning, with a large suction truck working on the hole in the ground.

Funny how such much "Breaking News" on this site never gets followed up on. Whatever happend to the man airlifted from Rt 114 after being struck while riding his scooter? I wonder if Barbara Wilson's jeep is still parked on her neighbor's right of way? It's like the reporters get bored and just think "whatever".

LIPA's clean-up crew is still working on the remediation of the ground under the transformer.

What spilled there out of the old transformer?
